One of the features that this article highlights is the Secure swap space, which allows you to have your swap space encrypted so that it cannot be read either unintentionally or intentionally. FileVault is fairly secure for storing business documentation, etc also. Article is well worth a read for any mac user, and non mac user who may have macs in their environment
Look at the patRIOT act of all things. It gives government carte blanche for whatever they want, AND your not allowed to even know about the laws. How can this prevent terrorism? Eroding away liberties and personal rights of privacy and general freedoms will never solve terrorism, it wont even make a dent in it.
But do you really want Microsoft in charge of this? Just as MSNBC requires you to use IE to view there video, which leaves Mac and Linux users out to pasture. What will happen if MS uses the same for there services in the future? Microsoft has a long, long colorful history of requiring people to use there software, and outright flatly refusing to make it compatible across the boards. Google on the other hand has done a marvelous job of doing just that, cross compatibility to every browser. Even my mobile phones browser!
Yes but to fix a bug in Apache you dont have to restart. A lot of the security updates that deal with libraries and stuff you do need to restart. Why iTunes requires a restart I am not exactly sure, that has always baffled me.
But wouldnt you agree that keeping your mac up to date is much simpler than keeping your windows PC up to date?
That said, windows has part of the GUI in the kernel to 'speed' things up aparantly. Is not the goal of efficent programing to only include the basics of what you need in the kernel and build up from there? IE, why do you need to reboot to change the windows domain you belong to, or the workgroup for that matter? That said, I belive it is one of the biggest security risks associated with windows, is when you boot the machine, everythings built into the huge kernel and everything is turned on and started. If windows worked simliar to OS X, you could boot and not worry about loading code that was 20 years old, that had no relevance to anything you do anymore *)
The hubble issue really saddens me. I really enjoy going to the daily space picture page that nasa has, and a lot of the pictures there come from the hubble hertidge. Hubble has made so many great breakthoughs that if it cant be repaired, then replace it with something that is easier to maintain and is better.
Very true. Microsoft could help the cause by making updates simpler, and requiring less restarts. Have you seen a mac when it needs its OS updated? Its much simpler.
OK So then you have microsofts incompentence then insted of FEMA? I dont put faith in any application that _requires_ the useage of internet exploder. MSNBC pisses me off to no end when I want to view the video clips and they wont support Firefox or Safari since I am a Mac user. Knowing ahead of time that there is internet users who FEAR internet exploder like the blubonic plauge, and internet users who cannot use internet exploder you would think that in a time of EMERGENCY they would have open compatablity across the board, not incompetence in putting forth a product that reaks of monopolistics and propritary architecture.
While ranting continues, I Wish that the DOJ would have forced microsoft to make there browser fully Acid 2 compliant, with $1 per user, per day fines until its released.
My programing skills came from Necessity, a group of people I was with needed a website and nobody could do it. I knew the basics of C programing so I picked up PHP and went from there. Tidbits like this can be very helpfull to the self taught, school taught and clueless.. Personal experiences with programing is golden, always.
Maybe the price for adsense ads for online gambling will now fall? They have been one oef the highest payers for a while now.
We stopped playing scrabble online because it got old, and people quitting just ruined the fun of it. I can only assume online gambling charges you as a loss if you disconnect/quit.
Besides, isnt gambling in real life much more fun than over the internet?
Most software testing is not done for security. It's done checking for functionality, making sure that things work as they should.
Your obvoiusly not a software developer then are you? In development of my web-based applications I scrutinize and TRY to physically break everything I can break in my webaps. Including giving bonuses to those who test for me, who can find security flaws and reproduce them. Security testing is major in my productions, and always should be. I am positive that it is for Apple's OS X.
Some of the code in windows XP hasnt even been seen by a human being for years upon years. From my perspective, a significant amount of exploits come from services or 'features' that are never used for anything. I several years for working at a college, 200+ PC's under my belt at any specfic time I find that our biggest problem with bugs, come from places that we hardly touch. Alas, Microsoft has admited that it focused more upon putting features into its products and pushing it out the door in a nice boxed product moreso than security. They only clammored about how they are focusing on security of recent when consumers started getting wise and yelling at the top of there lungs for microsoft to fix there products.
People in the US a lot of times dont realize what these people in china have for rights. Most of the time, nothing.
Then again, you have the absurd in china too.
A CHINESE CITIZEN TRIES TO SMUGGLE 54 PENISES OF REINDEERS
The fact if smuggling subjects of animal origin has been registered by customs officials of the city of Blagoveschansk. According to spokesman of Far-Eastern Custom Office, during the luggage inspection of tourists departing to China, 54 penises of reindeer weighting 9,49 kg were found in bag of a Chinese woman. Exporting parts of reindeer is permitted, though if there are special documents confirming they have been bought legally and certificates of vet services. But the Chinese citizen did not have such documents. Another Chinese citizen tried to smuggle 3,38 kg of pink radiola roots. The plant is included in the Red Book, so to export it is forbidden. Statements of the cases about violating Custom Code have been drawn up.
Microsoft with all its massive billions of dollars, charging in excess of $300 for a full, licesned version of Windows XP Proffessional... Cannot afford to write clean, bug free code?
As a programer myself I am often faced with the idea of completely re-writing my code, not just leaving the function sit, while being unused.
Compare to Apple's OS X (granted, the numbers argument about there is not a mass majority to spread a major virus even if it was to be discovered), why cant Microsoft decide to take shape, and start producing a REAL operating system that is built upon firm solid foundations of bug free (realitivly) code. They have admited in the past that they have pushed features ahead of security, and yet our major corporations still tout that microsoft is secure enough for there senstive finiancial information.
Give me a break will ya? I really just wish that microsoft would have a much more open beta, much more strict adherance to quality code, and less mouthpeices saying how great there stuff is.
So logitech hadde to follow and release new mice:-)
I wonder if the apple mighty mouse is still as mighty now?!?!?

I more or less view it as the internet workstation. It can sit in mothers room, and have a nice LCD flat screen monitor and be small and out of the way. The traditional computer desk with its bulk and size needs not be. It can easily fit on the side end table by the couch with its wireless keyboard and mouse.
pickup a big enough LCD monitor and it could easily be your wireless multimedia center for TV, dvd movies, and internet surfing in the living room.
Did it mention the power consumption of the entire unit is less than what the average intel cpu alone uses?
Outputting very little heat, virtually no noise, Half decent preformance, full services for file sharing, web services, ftp services, dns sevices, the entire works.. One of these babies could sit in everyone's room, in every house. Its no wonder they are popular. I am surprised that more people havent done unique and clever things with there mac minis.

That security on there software is too expensive, and that they can lower the TCO and become cheaper tha linux by forgoing security completely.

But I think its just another positive step in the linux quest for world domination and microsoft slaughter.
Therapists using this for pedophiles?
im sure it will be tried at some point, somewhere... And claimed to be 'theraputic'.
they will make a law as to whom, what, and where you can have 'virtual reality sex' with...
Imagine getting busted cuz you was pretending to be a VR prostitute for a while just cuz you felt sleezy...
