Wow, that's all we need, another popularity contest. This has nothing to do with their survival skills, it has to do with how personable they are (10 bucks says I know who will win after watching the _first_ show). Besides, this means that we nerds have no chance. Some ESFP will come along and win, and all the INTX's will get kicked off the island.
I think it would really be cool, if they let all of them stay on the island and see how they develop a socity, government, city, etc.... Would you end up with a communist `counsil' where everybody did for the state, or would they develop a sence of indiviualism and what they do best? What do you do with crimnals (can there be crimnals without laws?)? Would they work together or work against each other? Would their be specialized labor, or everybody for him/herself?
Anyway, I couldn't do this, it would be too hard to go 7 weeks without computers (unless you got a really small laptop and a cell phone, snuck them onto the island and kept it a secret and got online at night (oh, yeah, and a few hundred batteries (or....maybe you would develop solar panels out of coconuts....)))
More proof that censorship _never_ works. People will always find a way around it if they want to. There are always loopholes in laws (kinda like programs (hmm....`loop'holes.....)).
Anyway, supposing the telephones in Europe (on avreage) can only handle 14.4kbps, and this is _not_ the richest country in europe. I would say they probably got connection speeds under 10kbps. Try uploading even a 10 minute Mp3 at 9600. I believe that would take a lot longer then 40 mins. (unless they encoded it at like 32kbps)
First off, let me say that I don't think any half way decent employer would monitor an employees e-mail, telephone, internet usage and whatever else without a reason to believe that he doing anything wrong.
However, if the employee is using their equipment, on their time, with their money, then, sure they can _legaly_ monitor them. This dosen't make it right, it just makes it legal. It shouldn't be up to the government, it shuld be up to the people.
One thing I've noticed on slashdot (and everywhere else, for that matter) is that we are opposed to all government involvement, except when it benefits us. The only way we can ever have a truly free country is if the government works for everybody, and the only way to do that is for it to work for nobody.
Why do companies keep trying to patent and copyright stuff like e-commerce and "Linux"? Things like this never work and are just time consuming stupidities. (Anyway, let's face it, by definition (electronic commerce), telemarketers are the inventers of e-commerce, the use credit cards and the telephone (which uses electricity (which makes it electric))))
800mHZ isn't anything new. And, in a year or two, we will look back at this and say "Wow, that's so slow, how did we ever manage". I remember thinking that my 75 Pentium was really cool, now I think of that as slow. Any speed is reachable, it's just a matter of time (1tHZ anybody?).
First, I want to say that I disargee about technology making life harder (more complicated) for us. Most of the things that go wrong are thing that we do wrong. Computers do what we tell them to do, they can't do anything alone, then can't make mistakes.
Second, If anything, life is easier now. I can e-mail my friends without taking as much time as a phone call would. I can listen to my whole music collection on mp3 and not have to get up to change the CD all the time. I now can get a copy of books in a matter of seconds and find information on anything in no time at all.
Third, Technology will never take away the human element, it will just enhance it. Instead of having to meet with people, Alexander Grahm Bell made a phone. Instead of stopping to call them, soebody invented the radio and, the cell phone. Now, you don't even have to call them, you just send an e-mail or IM them. You still talk/communicate with the person, it's just faster, easier and better now.
Fourth, I doubt that the avreage person's day will be like that an a few months (Hmm....maybe we woln't have to worry about this in a few months (1,000,000:1 odds)).
Fifth, even if we don't _need_ this stuff, do we need a Car, no, but, hey, it makes life a lot easier, and so does technology.
Sixth, "We're trapped between two useless states - alarm and euphoria. Either we are railing about pornography, disconnection, and addiction or we are banging the drums for Gee-Whiz Computing that exists much more for its own sake than for our benefit." I know that some people (extreme protectionists (the `for the children' people)) don't like technology and I know that some people (like me:)) just like it for it's onw sake, but, most people are in the middle.
I believe that Japan (and maybe China) both have defenses against moderate sized Tsunamis. I would guess that man made tsunamis wouldn't be large compared to some natural ones, so this makes me ask the question, will this work anymore?
After the Apollo (and even during the latter missions) and ever seince, NASA budget has gotten small and smaller and smaller and well, you know. The american people no longer see the importance of Space exploration and the government is too busy trying to pay for welfare and social security (IOW - money for people who don't work and didn't plan for the future) to worry about the future of the world (or, actually, other worlds).
This will add new life to the space industry (actually, it will create the space industry). If space truly does become a place for private industry, then all industries will benefit from this (the chemists and pharmicists will be able to do thing in almost 0G and the tourist industry will make a killing on `moon trips' and the like, perhaps plants grow faster (and year round) in space, this would benefit the farming industry exponentcially, and, well, you can figure out many more for yourself).
This might also solve (ok....maybe a little premature, but, hey, we can talk a few decades down the road) the over population problem. Suppose that we bulit moon bases (hey, another industry, the mining industry (new elemants, new products, new profits)) and they had millions of people in them, that could take a burden off 6 billion people on 1 planet.
Ok, in conclution, I say that the privatzation of space is good and we should be glad that it is happening. It's time we looked past NASA, the ESA and all the other space agencys and started developing space ourselves.
I know this is off-topic, but, I've seen a lot about gun control and here is what Benjamin Franklin (one of the founders of our country and writers of the constitution):
"One who would trade liberty for [...] safty deserves neither liberty nor safty" -- Benjamin Franklin
Actually, Windows can crash your computer a whole lot faster, Melissa wasn't a virus, it was a worm. It didn't harm anybody/anything (s/e-mail servers). OTOH, Windows can crash 85% of all computer. So while Melissa was clogging e-mail servers, Windows was crashing those same servers.
First, I think that has already been said, but is worthy of mention again, it will make hurt anti-virus companies trying to get copies of the latest virii.
Second, many people just write virii for fun to to test their programming skills. This would be hurtful to the Programming community.
Third, I know the first amendment dosen't apply outside of the US, but, this is still a violation of freedom of speech.
Fourth, how about the source code to a virus? It in and of itself isn't harmful, you have to compile it and execute it for t to do anything. I guess they actually outlawed the compilation of virii, not writing them.
Finally, a cyberwar that dosen't involve 16 year old script kiddies and `the greatest threat to our nation'. It about time we had a _REAL_ cyberwar.
Anyway, I wonder how hard it is to crack the systems over there. I would guess al capeble sysadmins have come to America/Europe and all that is left are the point-click admin's. (Hmmm....NT or UNIX over there?)

Instead of having all the governments of the world decide how we should `regulate' (a.k.a. censor) the Internet, we should let the private industry decide this. This will allow for a much better system and let the users of the Internet (how many congressmen/women use the Internet daily?) choose what they want.
Also, here are some interesting thing I noticed about the Memorandum:
I. It calls racist speech illegal. This is a German law and is not true for many other places. You cannot censor American hate speech just beacuse of a German law. (Free Speech anybody?)
II. Why is everything "for the the Children"?
III. What excactly is "Internet Misuse"?
IV. "Properly encased with collaboration from government"? What does this mean?
V. A new Computer Crime Agency? Why can't the agencys already in place (FBI, NSA, etc...) do this?
VI. How do the governments want to get a "High degree of compliance"? (maybe by force (is this really self-regulatory?))
VII. Why do we need laws protecting ISP's right to delete thing on their server? It's their server, their money, they can delete anything they want (unless they have an agreement that they woln't delete it).
VIII. If people are scared of getting online beacuse of Porn, etc... there is always blocking software (however ineffective, it does a okay job for the casual surfer). In any case, this is a pretty stupid reason to disadvantage your kids in the future.
IX. About the tax incentives thing, it sounds a little bit like using political power to push an agenda (regulating (*cough* *cough* censoring *cough*) the Internet).
As I said, I don't think that it should be used, I was just saying that it should be legal (just not moral (and only ethically if you have a suspision of wrong doing).
Actually, I'm a 14 year old who is interested in computers and I use Linux/FreeBSD on my Network. I program in a number of languages (PERL, C, C++, UNIX Shell).
