having all these codecs around might be annoying yes, however howmany open codecs do you have besides the ogg suite?
Some people prefer their pc's with all open software. Open standars, and even open src.
this is where ogg comes in. now we have video and audio for free. For some of us, including myself, this is great, as mp3 is isn't an open format, nor is divx (and it's brethern) or mpeg for that matter.
I suppose in the future, not far from now, we'll have to rely on other means of authentication anyway. Passwords are good, but people really don't like remembering them, let alone a few of them. And then there's the chaning of them every few weeks.
No I belive things like handscans via your touchscreen enabled display for one. So then there's always the risc of someone beeing able to forge your handprint, well add an iris check to that. with the webcam you allready have standard installed in your monitor (video conferencing should be also quite normal around that time). Need stronger authentication than that? Voice pattern recognition.
Seems like it's really far away... we have most of the technology allready available in our homes. Just those touch screens and it should become the normal way to handle things...
yeah I got x11 and zoom setup... but I noticed that XV works a lot nicer (as I used to be able to use that just fine...)
I suppose it got broken then somehwere down the line then. If i have plenty of time, i might try figureing out when it might have gone wrong by trying several older X versions (4.3.0 for instance or older)
I suppose with so many people complaining about it, and finally having an 'active' developers group on it, maybe it'll get resolved one of these days...
Would you know how this is going to affect Enlightenment?
They where trying to do all that hardware 2d stuff with evas, and from what they've gotten so far, it looks pretty sweet. Will it make Enlightenment/evas redunant? Will they cooperate and share their knowledge? I'm an E user and fan, and am just currious how this is going to turn out...
I have the same problem. I used X11 upto 4.3.99 with the ATi propitary drivers (3.2.7 i belive) and XV 'worked' Ever after those drivers it sucked. I'm with X6.7.0 now and XV hardly works. I have noticed with DGA support enabled (for vmware) it doesn't work at all. without dga it sometimes works for some files. I haven't been able to put my finger onto what caused it, (X, ati drivers, file type etc) but something is definatly broken...
It's what all these other distro's have and slackware was missing. It's not in -current yet, but as far as I understood it will be eventually. Check it out, and I promise, you won't regret it.

Here's our 1.4Ghz 1Gbyte RAM server. It also doesn't have a big uptime (16 days or so cos to power failure :/) however it runs heavly used http daemon, which relies on postgres daemon and runs 2 Enemy Territory servers (inactive right now). When setting up I did decide against the ram x2 rule but watned to make sure i'd never run out of ram with all servers running (it's a heavly used machine) So i created 650mb swap partition. However I could have done with so much less. Swap was really needed back in the days, But I guess now adays you really don't need more then 128 - 256 mb. Having swap around remains to be handy, and if you notice a lot of swaps and a lot of runnig out of mem, then i guess you're better off increasing ram then swap. I guess the 'modern' calculation of swap should be something along the lines, per 512mb ram, increase swap by something around 128mb...or so.

I guess I can imageine why people would like this.
As far as I understand it, you now can just add a wireless nick to your allready existing router and have an AP right then and there. sounds like a good deal to me, it's just what I was looking for really. since my router/server allready does a lot of work for me, this makes it I don't have to add a socket or whatever to plugin an nother extra adapter, i don't have to worry about a 'spot' even so small.
Allthough I do admit attenna's might be a problem, with a seperate AP you can just move the antenna (and the whole AP at that) anywhere you want, now you are somewhat limited...
The thing is, in IT land you always have to wait for years, cos something new is just around the corner. So to just 'wait' is nonsese.
The only reason i see to wait (why I am waiting actually) is for the plextor to ship a dual layer drive (gotta love plextor) especially a 'faster' dual layer one (2.4 is ok, but 4 would be nicer) that does +-R/RW and not only + or -.
The 'errors' are very unlikely as they are the same drives with a dual layer firmware, or better yet, they might use just a bit newer drives with better firmwares. The chance of lots of coasters and lots of errors, rather slim.
This is how I would setup my mom's PC if it where faster then a p1 233 : ) or my own for that matter
On my Windows installation CD I have:
LiteStep (it's a shell replacement, lighter, faster stabler then explorer.exe)
WinRar (shareware, but who can't go without an zip/unzipping program)
IrfanView +plugins (the #1 free image viewer it's fast!)
Mozilla (or the seperated firebird + it's email client)
Turbo Navigator (i have been to lazy to find a better File Manager replacement)
OpenOffice (office suite usually doesn't get installed till I need it however)
Sonique (for mp3 cos it is quite light and it looks hot. however winamp is under active development and is considerd the more cooler player)
BSDPlayer (A free great video player however ifranview plays video's aswell if needed but for divx or similar viewing this one is recommended.)
gvim for win (cos i don't wanna load op OOo for every file i want to view)
Nero (usually ends up later in my 'image' cos i do most of my burning under linux generally) it comes with your pc/drive and XP *barf* does burning too so not really needed.
These are my and probably most basic apps.
You might need ftp client or such things but this should suffice for basic windows tasks. And most of them are free.
On a side note, the main reason I'd be in windows would be to play games, HAVE to use word (that i haevn't luckly installed for years) because OOo won't handle the file, burn some ISO i can't bother to figure out to burn in *nix and play a game that there is no linux version off, hence I use win98se still which works just great for me. At work i need to use lotus notes cos it's like important there, and i'm stuck with win2k but all to my needs configured with pretty much those apps.
For linux it is harder for me to make a list because there's ton's of little apps i install because of either dependancies or just cos they seem handy, but your basic setup besides the OS itself, windowmanager and desktop manager should
be something like
Gvim (duh)
gentoo (filemanager but i assume your DM will have a FM in it)
Mozilla (if you need both mail and browser I don't see a reason to use the seperated packages)
qiv as a quick image viewer
gmplayer for video playing
OpenOffice (the advantage of using OOo in win and nix is that once you are used to it, you are used to it.
xmms (for your mp3 needs allthough gmplayer suffices in this quite well too)
That's really all you basically need.
much needed is gkrellm though : ), who does not have it? + it is easy sensor monitor and volume controller and mail notifier.
The Gimp might be handy if you want to do image manipulation but I don't think that's really needed on a home system. But since most win users suffice with MSPaint Xpaint or the gimp might be handy.
That's really what I got and i must say it works just fine for me.
