  1. Damn Techies on Worst Explanation From Tech Support? · · Score: 1

Yeah... i'm doin that tech support thing that seems all programers do atleast once during university... gotta get it out of my system. I know what you are goin through, as some support people have never even got a solid week of training.

I deal with lusers and their digital cameras, but got alot more training (as per the services requirements) and have a bit more of a chance getting someone to call back to arrange another session to learn. joy... anyway, I had this person call... 5 times, and each call started with "My camera died (again). What keeps happening?" This happens every 12 or 13 days... And every time, I would say: "How long has it been since you last changed your batteries." She would say: "about 12 days. When you last called." Then I would say: "OK, there is a chance that your batteries are dead. Do you have any fresh ones we can try out?". She would comply, and promptly end her call. I cant wait till next tuesday... after a long weekend, and she'll be ready to go with some more dead batteries.

oh well... not much i can say other than. replace your batteries.

p.s. I know it's the same woman... the VoIp system needs a login (easy website...) and pass... its great, but there are some stupid stupid people out there.

  4. go windows on Rules for Teenage Internet Access? · · Score: 2, Funny

one thing windows lets us do is install firewalls, and block certain internet sites. But... one thing I realized was if you talk to them and act mature about it, tell them that the illicit content they are looking at it designed for more mature people, and inform them that you are going to block those sites. If you do that, then their ball is in their corner. They have 2 options: 1, realize you are right and keep off the pr0n, or 2, they override yer countermeasures and you catch them.

Even the most Cyber Baby'esque child in your house can't totally remove the logs of internet traffic.

Basically, if you cant trust yer kids to keep off the pr0n, don't let them have internet in their room... or put the computer in the living room and only let them use it when yer home. If yer kid is looking at pr0n in the living room and masturbating in the relative public of that place, illicit internet use is the least of your worries.

whatever... trust, or force... its all good.

Around home, We seperate into 3 types: Compost (We live in the country, so that stuff is golden for the garden), Returnables / Recyclables like pop cans and beer bottles, and then other... thats like... well everything else.

Around school, (Acadia University) we have an extensive program of recycling and sorting, but if the janitors see one bit of non mal-sorted trash, like a bottle in with the papers, they won't fish it out, but infact, throw it in the garbage, and won't recycle it all.

I agree that aluminum cans and bottles should be returned, but what can they do with the other stuff than bury it in the ground or burn it in a furnace.

As for the tree issues, and the paper issue under that, the mills that make the pulp and the paper are quite efficient. There is little waist when they make pulp and less when they press it to paper. If a person would want to save a single tree, they would need an approximatly equal amount of paper. The logistics to save 1 acre of "old growth forests" would amount to millions upon millions of pounds of paper, and then you are burning up fossil fuels and poluting the air with exhaust.

Basically, the earth was here for hundreds of millions of years before humans, and it will be here for hundreds of millions of years after us. It is only human ignorance that makes us think that if 10% of our population recycles, we can make a difference. These people should put their brains to better use and find cures for dieseases, super conductors, the never ending beer, and many more things that would accelerate our society into a better and bigger future... not holding us back because mother earth has a few boo-boos.

Hold on, the future is coming if you want it to or not... there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. Just sit down, hold on, and enjoy the rids. See you if things calm down.

  11. ummm... on Sending Files w/o Sending Clear Passwords? · · Score: 1

Basically if you are sending something... no matter what, it is broken down into packets and sent. Your computer does not care what it is, just where it is going. It is the job of the receiver to understand it. The reason yer SFTP is slow is because yer internet connection is throttled for non HTTP packets. This is common in large networks and schools.

What I would do is burn it onto a CD and snail mail it to the person. If the file is to large to put onto one cd, then probabally it is too large to send in one sitting.

If all your traffic is local though, like still on the same LAN or WAN, or (taking a large leap) Metropolitan Area Network, the transfer rates should be no problem.

One other thing. If your institution is using extremley large images or files, generally your sys admins are nice enough to allow you to tansfer them at generally astronomical speeds. If yours are being little trolls holing their bandwidth and crushing the boned of all who cross their path is seek of the precious BW, might i suggest a Knight in Shining Armor, or their boss.

the easiest way I can see is having a converter from a 110 wall outlet to a 12 / 5 molex plug. then you can connect that to yer cd drive and bobs yer mothers brother. you can even put a Y connector on the molex to connect to yer other PSU so you can select the source. Now that you have power, just run a line off the bottom (get the specs and solder a line there (its not that hard)) and you can have the line run anywhere. I would take one of the front panels to the case and botch it to the front of the cd drive then solder another set of leads to the opening button (on the bottom (also not hard)) this way it is hidden and looks sleek. I have something similar in my case, but with only one PSU. I have a series of switches that allow me to turn on specific pieces of hardware or lights. its kinda kewl but i have to not forget to turn somethings on before others, or else I get quite the mess.

Anyway, have some luck with the project, and modding is about 2 things. Coming up with something new, and Voiding the Warrenty.

This cuts my bills in half, but because we have laptops and OC3 internet connections, we have the highest tuition of any university in canada, coming in at just under 15,000 CDN (about 26,000 CDN for international students).
