  2. Somebody think of those wretched public servants? on Is Finland's Universal Basic Income Trial Too Good To Be True? (theguardian.com) · · Score: 3, Interesting

I dunno what the real estate market is like in Helsinki but 140 euro a week would be lucky to pay the rent on a 1 bedroom apartment where I live, a decent sized industrialised city in the Southern Hemisphere.

For those that believe in small government, a universal income would slash the number of public servants overnight - those who currently administer unemployment schemes in ensuring that 'dole bludgers' have met the appropriate conditions to continue receiving payments. This would also apply to administering veterans' affairs, disability support and aged pension.

  3. If by optional you mean vendors can ship a wifi only device and charge a premium for 4G then yes.

But this Snapdragon is the same as in any smartphone. It makes no sense to offer wifi only and needn't be connected to 4G without a SIM plan?

It is what it is, a smartphone chip. Microsoft's partnership with Qualcomm dates back to the Nokia Lumia. This latest effort to relaunch Windows RT is nothing more than a salvage attempt to recoup some of the IP from the Windows Phone effort.

So performance should be relative to an Android flagship phone, adjusted for running Windows...

  5. iPads have had (optional) 3G/4G network connectivity since the original launch in 2010.

So why is this news? If anything, Windows is behind by over half a decade.

  9. I have to ask... What's the state of play with the recently acquired Imagination now that Apple have stopped licensing their GPU and everyone else switched to Mali long ago?

I would have thought that Canyon Bridge might release a cheap MIPS board as a raspberry pi competitor.

  10. It is NOT a desktop replacement.

Well it could be if it supported more than a gig of RAM and 4K graphics.

i.e. as found in the VideoCore V implementation of the forthcoming rPi 4.

  16. I care enough to comment from the other side of the world and as it's Boxing Day I'm embarking on family roadtrip for summer vacation!

Based on my limited sample size of North American friends on Facebook, several atheists and a Jain are celebrating neo-Pagan winter solstice, a jewish friend, who earlier in the month had posted about Hannukah, has a witty Catmas post but even my Muslim friends from Canada are posting Christmas messages and don't seem that bothered by sectarian divisions.

Just maybe we're living in a post-PC world where peace and goodwill extends to shoving the offensively non-offensive "happy holidays" up your bum! :)
