This kid was caught doing something illegal on a fairly large scale. Screw 'em. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time, and all that.
Now on another note...
As it is, entertainers get way too much money for what they provide. They're just people too. Nicholas Cage doesn't deserve to make, in a week, what a medical doctor makes in a year. Where are our priorities? Why aren't the people that are saving lives making $11.5 million each year?
Mark all Metallica albums down to $6. When the record company makes less money, so do(es) the artist(s). Sorry Lars, no spinach and tuna soufle` and no more flying to and from Europe on a whim. And you might have to suffice with one or two houses. Oh pity.
Except Apple did change the ROM in the "new world" Blue & White G3 machines to disable ZIF upgrading last year. The upgrade companies found a way around it, but it was Apple's first attempt at locking those companies out.
Also, for $285 you can have a 450MHz 1MB 2:1 cache aluminum Motorola ZIF from OWC. Copper really is the way to fly, but it won't make a $200+ difference in an old iMac.
Answers: 1) Absolutely. You've got 11Mbit of wireless bandwidth...make good use of it. You could surely put 20 or 30 against each-other. Just as long as you're within 150ft of the AirPort hub. 2) The only *new* hardware to worry about is the ATI Rage128 AGP/2X graphics card. This should take the folks at LinuxPPC.org a couple of weeks to get functioning. DVD viewing won't work until the rest of the industry has it figured out anyway.
Quick corrections: DVD-RAM is standard on the faster models. The standard Ultra2SCSI on those faster machines is much faster than Firewire. Firewire is capable of 400Mbs, but that doesnt mean the drives are. =)
Must have hurt when they sewed your mind shut. The G4 is SMP capable. Did you see dual-PIII's on the market before the first PIII shipped? I think not.
The big problem here is, people will use it. They will have no choice. Microsoft will bundle it with Win200x and make computer manufacturers customize it with their own nifty 8-bit images. Sooner or later, someone will figure out how to pry into your Win200x system using this messeging protocol. Microsoft will consider it only a throretical security flaw, and blame open-source developers for not paying enough attention to it. So now its all your fault. But hey, MS is the good guy for proving that the open-source model is/was just a phase and that we should just trust them to do things.
Right about then, you'll be able to jump into your Microsoft Explorer and drive down to MicrosoftMarket and buy some Microsoft Beans for your morning coffee. But dont dare call it Java...
Oh, and as for a product that doesn't assume you're an idiot: How 'bout Linux.
Isn't the whole wave of Linux trends toward making installation simpler and faster? We've got Linux installation progs. that boot you into X before you even touch the kernel, and walk you through holding your hand.
I do commend you, however, on pointing out that for you its understanding the way the computer works that makes you want to do things the hard way. It is for this reason that I run MacOS and Linux/Debian i386 at home. Sometimes a little elbow grease is soothing. =)
The Airport is seperate from the iBook...and its silver. The iBook wasn't meant to tag along at your fscking meetings, it is a 'consumer' portable. Get a Lombard if you want to go with the biz-style.
Yeah, this version of the PowerBook [333 and 400MHz models] have been out since may. The 333 model has 512K L2 backside cache, the 400 has 1MB L2 backside [both on-chip]. The iBook is new and has a 300MHz G3 [actually a 333, reduced for power savings], will come in all 5 iMac colors, ready for 11Mb/sec wireless networking [Apple/Lucent] and does include a 24X CD-ROM, contrary to popular belief. Rumor has it that Apple will soon [this week] introduce 433 and 450MHz models of the PowerBook, and after the initial introduction of this iBook, they may have a faster model with more base RAM [which is upgradeable to 160MB]. And yes, the PowerBooks run LinuxPPC R5 1999 very well. From what I understand, much of the development was done on a PowerBook.
Also, for the guy that mentioned he had no configuration options w/ a new PowerBook...Apple will soon have customizable configurations on the Apple Store. BYOPB man.
amen!

Hey, it runs MacOS better and faster!
Stop complaining about what it doesn't do because it was never meant to do it.

You saved me alot of typing =)

Its kind of sad that just because Apple revolutionized the consumer market [again] they have to pay with immatation.
But it was bound to happen.
