Google's Android is a huge let down, mostly because of Google's policy of rolling over and allowing us to get fucked by the other supposedly more traditional corporations. Apple says "please don't do multi-touch", they take it out (and fuck us), T-Mobile says "we don't want our customers to tethering" and so Google make it so no-one can tether (and fuck us - I am not even a US customer - how is this happening). Fuck Google and their phones (I have a HTC magic which I will need to hack to get it to do what Rogers told me it could before I bought it - i.e. tether - Rogers don't understand this either). I am saving my pennies and waiting for a Nokia (and maybe the next iteration which will hopefully be lighter). I was always a big fan of Google but they are too big and too much like every other corporation.
I think that's what the suicide offers are for - to reduce the number of stupid people. Seems like a naturally self-correcting system to me. I say let it run its course. Next thing we will have 10foot disclaimers on the entrance to cinemas telling the dumb masses that its just pretend.
I cut the cord and I don't miss it. The funny thing is the cable company keeps calling me up and offering me free cable. I tried it over summer and my wife and I made a concerted effort to watch cable. The thing is though, and I expect you're not going to believe me when I tell you this, they expect you to organise your life around their schedule if you want to watch a specific show. I know! Also, the amount of adverts just made it completely unwatchable. So I took the box back. Since then the cable company still calls me up offering free cable and I tell them we're not interested. They said if I ever change my mind I can have another two months of free cable and again with no obligation. I'm thinking maybe I'll let it in the house for the NHL playoffs. Then again....
The world has changed. Cable companies haven't and wont. They will go the way of the newspaper and the dial-up internet ISP.
I prefer the steam way because I don't have to keep CDs/DVDs and look for keys all the time. I can move to a new PC and everything just downloads and works. Once, I had a gaming session planned with mates from the UK and my PC was at my girlfriends in Montreal and she was out of town for the weekend. I just took a machine from work, went home, installed steam and a couple of hours later I was ready to play.
Also, Valve used to let you install the same game on up to 5 PCs and play on them all simultaneously so I trust that they are fundamentally not morons. If you are still in love with Mickey Mouse then good for you.
Steam has had its hiccups but it seems rock solid for the past few years. I'm happy with it but you can go get your games where you like. If Disney has their way they will be the only show in town. TV is crap though so am not sure I care.
That's what I thought too. However, there is one important difference and that is that I trust Valve to not be complete cunts. Yes sometimes they are stupid or unreliable but never evil whereas Disney could be argued to be completely evil in that they are 100% against our interests as consumers and citizens to the extent that they can change international copyright law to suit their own interests and thus deny us content that should by now be in the public domain.
So yes, this system is just like steam for movies but I for one will not be buying in as I don't trust Disney the way I trust Valve.
I saw that too and immediately thought they need to split the touch pad - one half on each side of the keyboard. Also I'm not sure how thise would make best use of multiple monitors. I don't think I know anyone who uses just one monitor anymore.
Surely the whole point of AI is to create something that isn't selfish, shortsighted, ego-driven. We don't want to create another us. For a start, another human type intelligence will wipe us out as its first motivated action. Boyden has hit on a very interresting idea but he has drawn the completely wrong conclusion. Motivation is what we want to miss out of our AI. Let it find its own motivation or let us try to persuade it that our motivations are the ones worth following. One greedy, destructive, genocidal intellignce is enough for any solar system. If it has a tendency to boredom and nihilism as Boyden suspects then lets allay that by filling the remainding billions of years by fixing mortality and scarcity and exploring the universe together.
when surely the bigger question here is who was dumb enough to believe that fucking stupid and clearly made up statistic in the first place? I will eat my PCs if anyone can prove that Apple get anywhere even close to 91% of all PC sales over $1000. Remember folks, approximately 87.93% of statistics are made up on the spot.
I can say: its because politicians are lying, scheming whores who care nothing for the people they are meant to represent. Not only that but in Canada they are bland, uninspring, grey, dull and well bland. I would rather take an interest in US politics. It probably has more of an impact on our lives here in Canada in any case.
He doesn't appear to be going "on and on". He appeared to me to be a talking about how we already have a working system but how, given that Canada is small and unimportant, its the perfect place (like say NZ) to experimentally roll out a new system and that in any case, even though the sytem aint broke, its the way everyone is going to go sooner or later.
I actually think that online voting is the first step towards true democracy although I have to admit to being scared as well as excited by that possibility (come see the Canadian death penaly...)
Its not just a matter of whether nuclear power can be done safely. In principle it can if you neglect the fact you have no way of getting rid of the waste. Its the practice thats the issue. Nuclear power is almost always done by private companies and they prefer their bottom line to our environment any day of the week and so, in the UK at least, they frequently let radioactive waste vent into the sea to the extent that all our coastlines and estuaries around the Irish sea are radioactive to many many times the legal limits. Come drink from and bath in the Irish Sea and bring your kids too and then maybe I will believe you when you say its perfectly safe. We have beautiful beaches in that area. I never saw people swimming....
I think his point is that those same legislators are abdicating their responsibility by allowing an effective monopoly (as pointed out by many previous posts) which then is free to abuse its market position. The point being then that capitalism is no longer working as advertised (i.e. increases consumer choice and leads to competitive pricing through... competition) and so one can either roll over pay up whatever they demand or rebel and pirate.
Seriously though, how often do border guards ever catch anyone? All that frisking and undressing and do they EVER catch anyone? I feel certain that if they ever did, it would be all over the media. As evidenced here, this pointless pompous nonsense reaches the pinacle of its expression on the way into the US.
not only a very nice free IDE but an open-source cross-platform class library. My code compiles and runs on Windows (32 &64) Ubuntu (32 & 64) Red Hat Enterprise, FreeBSD - thats all thats been tested so far but no reason to think the list doesn't continue.
Erm kelowna.en.craigslist.ca is not in the US (the "ca" on the end is a dead giveaway) and it is owned by Craigslist and it is obvious to anyone without Asperger's that we're talking about Craigslist sites.
Kelowna seems fine too (also foreign) but I agree, its way too scary and unpredictable out here. You should stay in your safe little country and you should maybe think twice before leaving the house too - its just not safe!
I guess you're right in principle (as both a reciprocal licences and therefore encourage dual-licencing) but the GPL is scary to a lot of people and its not the best written licence in that a lot of its content is in the preamble which has no legal standing so far as I understand. From our point of view, we would rather use a licence which is well-written and that we can imagine defending in court. The GPL reads more like a manifesto than a licence. As a company, it is not our stance that we want to abolish the evil capitalist software market in favour of a socialist or libertarian anarchic utopia:) it just suits our purposes to have the code out there and to have a good reason to undercut the competition.
I run a small project funded by a private company and with the aim of making money at some point. We chose the Open Software Licence (OSLv3) as a clean and clear licence which allows us to show the code and for everyone to use it and contribute to it but without losing control of it. The GPL is an extreme open source licence which effectively says no-one should be able to make more than their hourly rate from software. Once we have taken over the market with our free open-source offering, we plan to make proprietary versions and modules as well as taking a royalty from third parties who can use our platform as a way to get their expertise to market in software. I looked through all the major open-source licences and the OSL is the most business-friendly at least for our model.
I think he meant "We ostensibly invaded Iraq to rid it of weapons of mass destruction but really we were there to install a puppet government, and set up a supply line for it's resources.."
True he was undoubtedly a total murdering cunt but well if you're gonna start pointing fingers then you'll be needing to hang Cheney, Bush senior, definitely Kissinger (can you hang someone more than once?) and you might want to rope up Clinton while you're at it.
Fact is its righteous to kill dark-skinned, rag-headed foreigners for doing very bad things but its a little less comfortable when it gets closer to home. Saddam, for all his many crimes and faults, was merely an incompetent client of the US government.
just hand it over now - we'll find uses for it.

Off you go :)

Maybe South Park the musical was to long ago? Today's moderators don't know they're born....
If I take the vaccine and I only sleep with my wife and in 10 years I'm HIV free does it work?
Or is one of the pre-requisites of joining the trial that you commit to sleeping with as many sleeezy whores as you can find?
These are the questions that keep me from being a productive member of society.....

I always feel so welcome entering the US :)
