Hey I took the Mac boys seriously as I'm in the market for a new personal computer just now. So I went and priced up a i7 920 desktop system with as much memory as I could get and the latest GeForce graphics and 12 GB of RAM. Now obviously I couldn't find a Mac to get anywhere close to my local custom system but as near as I could get the difference was around $1500. When I compare to a Dell am still looking at a difference of almost $1000 and for a system that hardly compares.
Argue all you like, Mac buyers still appear to me to be dupes. When that changes, I will buy a Mac. Obviously I wont run Mac OS X because I want something that is intuitive for me and whilst I find Ubuntu very easy to use and I'm used to Windows, I can't find my way to do the simplest things on a Mac. Each to his own I guess. I'm just glad I don't have to pay the Mac tax.
...it was due to having too puny a power supply. Go spend some money on a decent power supply then test your memory again and if it fails on memtest, return it to the manufacturer you fucking moron and stop wasting our time. This isn't a forum for you to ask us questions instead of switching your brain on. What a fuckwit!
but I wonder if these people would be willing to go live for a month on an island in Polynesia at a point in time of our choosing in the next 50 years without scuba gear or any flotation device? If they're so certain that global warming is just unfounded hysteria, let them stand by their words.
Actually, fuck that, can we please just remember the names of all those that argued now and in the past against action on climate change and then when we're all migrating into northern latitudes and high ground, we can boat them all out to the current location of a nice pacific island, sink the boat (which wont matter if global warming is a myth) and come back in a week to look for the fuckwits.
I volunteer to remember the name of Freeman Dyson.
Its just so sophisticated to buck the popular trend isn't it? How arrogant do you have to be to think your opinion outweighs the work of several thousand researchers who have spent their lives' work studying this question. Not to mention that the IPCC is dangerously conservative in their predictions. The truly sophisticated thing for humanity is for us to decide as a species to actually make a choice not to wipe out 90% of our population.
I live in Canada so no worries here. If you live in the US and are talking this bullshit, please be prepared to swim for a while before we let you in:)
Similar in French too - "droit" means right and "tout droit" (literally translated as all right) means straight on. However, it probably only appears strange to people like me who don't really speak the language.
Also, the first thing I do when I install windows is to fire up IE and go get Firefox. Once installed I tend to only use Firefox unless something wont work without IE.
Can anyone tell me how I get to download Firefox if IE doesn't come pre-installed on Windows? Remember I can't go get it with FileZilla because I'll need IE to go get that too. If your answer involves the command line then well I'm sure that millions of regular users will be just ever so grateful once IE is gone from a default install of Windows!
=> UPP C++ IDE and class library - works just as well on Windows and Ubuntu => Skype - appears to work fine on both too => Cisco VPN - I have to get an open source version for Ubuntu but it actually works better than the official Cisco version (doesn't disconnect all the time) => SVN client = same => Open Office appears to work just as well if not better than MS Office and I've not found any compatibility problems => Counter-strike source runs great under Ubuntu, even on my crappy 8500GT => Firefox - same....
and so on.
Ubuntu is easier to install then windows so I'm actually wondering why I'm sitting at a Windows PC. As a software developer most of my users use Windows but I need to test on Windows XP, Windows Vista 64, Ubuntu 32 bit and Ubuntu 64 bit so yes I was stupid enough to go buy Windows Vista Ultimate edition.
It seams to me that Crysis is the sequel to Far Cry. I haven't played FC2 because I saw it was made by different people. How can it be a sequel if some big publisher has simply bought the name?
Crysis was cool and felt like the next step on from Far Cry.
Can someone please tell me what is so wrong with France? Why do/.ers so revile that country?
They have a better healthcare system, better education and better quality of life than the US or Canada (where I live) so I'm not quite sure where they are going wrong. Is it some ideological revulsion at 8 weeks/year vacation? Yes, 8 weeks is just wrong isn't it? Morally repugnant. Or... The US is the richest country in the world and all its people happily work away with virtually no vacation and the thanks they get is to live in fear of bankruptcy, repossession and being denied essential healthcare on a technicality. Hmmm, which country sounds fucked up?
OMG the picture you paint of your domestic life is both frightening, twee and well frightening. Where in Canada do you live? It sounds like you live close to the 49th but then maybe not closer than the Yukon....
Well from the description it seems unlikely that the orgone generators interfere to any practical extent with the wifi so good for them! If building a few pretty sculptures turns the bad harmful wifi into good life-enhancing wifi then I'll have one too. Perhaps they could partner with Cisco to market value-addded hippie-friendly wifi?
It is the norm where we live because we don't have that great bastion of truth and justice, the Advertising Standards Authority, looking out for us.

ok I need more coffee - this post didn't come out the way I intended....
This was a joke right? 141/29 is 4.86 as he said. Forget your third grade math and get a calculator if you're really that fucking stupid.
Also, ratios only require one colon. Are you sure its safe for you to sit unsupervised?

Ah I didn't get that far I'm ashamed to say. I got perhaps half-way through the last book and I just couldn't bring myself to read anymore. I think the rocket-propelled flying fox into the tower of London was probably the last straw for me and the reason why I (unjustifiably it now seems) labeled his books as all having weak endings. I didn't mean that to be a damning indictment of all his other books (I thought snow crash was raw and childish yet enjoyable but I loved Cryptonomicon and thought Diamond Age was utterly delightful). I meant merely to emphasise how much better his writing has become in Anathem.
Can you have read the same book?

To me its clearly Stephenson's best book and the only one he has written that hasn't fallen apart towards the end. His prose is so much more mature in this. Its such a pleasure to read a book which expects so much of its readers. His humour in the book plays across an enormous range of questions and schisms in philosophy, language an physics and I found myself giggling whilst amazed at his audacity in expecting so much from his audience. Yes it is self-indulgent but only so much as it indulges his target audience. If you found it boring and you didn't find it extremely funny throughout then I guess he was expecting a little too much of you or you were under-estimating him. Seriously, this book puts the rest of his work to shame. Please try re-reading it. Everything else he has written is practice in order to get it right for Anathem.
but what exactly is it that cant be done with the web already that needs this Silverlight thing please? Or is it just that webmonkeys like shiny new things?
I was actually referring to the entirety of all posts on this topic but I made the silly mistake of replying to the last post I read which I guess I was sort of agreeing with as the person you were quoting was attempting to reinvent pitch control.
Deep space my arse! Its just space. We've not even stepped out of our own little planet-moon system yet and we think we want to start using up space-faring superlatives. Morons! Soon the term deep-space will be about as meaningful as artificial intelligence (assuming deep-space was ever a meaningful term in the first place). If this system is for "deep-space" then what will we call a communication protocol that works well between stars?
Wow, to think that all these years the wind-power industry could have been asking slashdot instead of wasting all that time and money on research! Don't worry, I'm going to forward this entire thread to Vestas, GE, Enercon and the rest. I'm sure they'll be delighted to learn that slashdot has enroled their best minds to help with this problem.

Hey Gandalf, its no wonder they call you "the grey" - you can be quite mean at times.
Actually I thought you meant pinch the hippies to wake them up. Only later (time dilates) did I realise you were referring to burglary.

To whomever is repeatedly modding me down.... fuck you. I'm tired of your nazi bullshit.
Have a great day. ^_^

I have a revolutionary idea which might accomplish something similar. I'm thinking of calling it a "gear-box"
so now we only discuss the summary and not the article? I guess its more honest....
