Does Slackware have an apt/"windows update"-style auto-update tool yet?

Check out slapt-get. It can be found on freshmeat at http://freshmeat.net/projects/slaptget/. I used it to keep my Slack 9.1 install up to date and was pleased with its performance.

    You want Audacity.

I second the motion. I've used Audacity and find it pretty impressive. Plus, it's open source.

Another multi-track, sound-editing option is n-track studio. It's closed source shareware, but powerful and may be worth your 30 some odd dollars. (Play with the trial version before committing any personal funds. It may not be what you are wanting.) I used it to do some recording back in the pre-3.0 days and was fairly pleased with the results.

I have to agree with you on Spielberg. He seems to be hit and miss. On the one hand, I think of all the groundbreaking films he has produced (Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, E. T., etc.). However, I also cringe when I remember the hours wasted watching A.I. and the not-as-terrible-at-least-until-they-got-to-the-mai nland sequel to Jurassic Park.

As far as Tom Cruise goes, though, I have to disagree. I think Cruise has a good chance at doing justice to this movie. Look at his excellent performance in The Last Samuri. If he can pull that off again, we may be in for a treat.

I think we will just have to wait and see on this one.

When did parents stop taking responsibility for the games that their children play, the cd's that their children listen to, and the movies that their children watch?

What I find interesting is that the /. crowd tends to take your stance when it comes to government intervention. When we discuss family / parental issues, however, we are of the opinion that parents should allow their children to choose and experience for themselves. What gives?

Most kids are too imature to make good choices. They need guidance from an external authority -- at least until they are ready to handle themselves responsibly. If parents aren't filling that role, maybe it's time for "big brother" to step in.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not advocating government control of the media. I just wish parents would wake up and raise their kids right and that everybody else would allow them to do so. Little Johnny is not oppressed just because he wasn't allowed to play GTA.

It is possible for a parent to go too far in censoring the things their child is exposed to. However, most people today err on the side of being too lenient, allowing their children access to junk that they're not mature enough to handle. This leads to court cases like this one. A government ruling shouldn't even be necessary in this situation.

But if they followed the lead of the Tango and put a transmission in the thing, they would be able to match the top speed of most vehicles with an internal combustion engine.
