  1. Re:And Microsoft rule on Why Vista Had To Be Rebuilt From Scratch · · Score: 1, Insightful

What OS supported USB first is irrelevent. The claim that Apple "made" USB is ridiculous. Apple took advantage of the upcoming technology and contributed nothing to the effort. USB was years in the making, it was created by Intel, supported my MS, and required to be shipped in all PC in order to get MS certification. Intel and MS made USB. Apple had nothing to do with it.

  2. Re:That explains a lot on Why Vista Had To Be Rebuilt From Scratch · · Score: 1

Windows is built by professional coders as is Linux largely. Both are upheld to a high standard.

"Now we learn that Windows is made pretty much like Linux." Don't think we learned that at all. Windows isn't made at all like Linux and the article doesn't shed any light on how it's done really. Believe what you will believe but just because the article says so doesn't mean it's true. Nowhere in the article did it suggest that the development process for Windows is anything like Linux.

I don't know if you are responding to me but it seems like we're in agreement. Of course I don't think Dell should develop its own processors.

Dell doesn't like fixed expenses of which R&D is one. They like recurring ones because they scale with the business. Dell makes more profit per employee and per dollar invested than anyone else. R&D companies are not in the same league. There's a reason for Dell historic rise in the stock market after all. If you wanted someone to earn money for you, would you choose Michael Dell or Steve Jobs? No one does it better than Michael Dell.

I have no problem with Dell rebranding products or farming out development. Save their R&D investment for where it really counts. Mp3 players aren't it. Dell kicks Apple's ass where it counts---in big business.

  6. Re:One other advantage for the Dell Device on Dell Launches Flash Music Player · · Score: 1

How long has the shuffle been out? A year? How much cheaper can it be had than $99? $95? Big deal.

The shuffle is a me-too product that Apple introduced long after the market was saturated with flash products that had superior features. Of all the flash players, the shuffle is the most feature-poor. Only Apple lovers accept that the screen is unneccesary. Everyone else seems to be able to fit one in at the same or lower price.

The Dell product is late and just like all the others but still better than the shuffle. Doesn't take much to achieve that.

I have the Etymotics and the Shures (suck) but have given up on traveling with either of them because they are too uncomfortable over time. Your ear canal may be different. Bose for me even though I also despise the company. Their noise cancelling headphones are the only technology that's worth having.
