If everyone in the world took the 2-3 seconds to obfuscate their eMail address and also spent 1-2 seconds it takes their brain to decode their friends' eMail, the resulting daily wasted energy would be roughly 4-5 times the GDP of the USA.
Sadly the bad guys can DDOS the good guys, but the good guys can't (easily) DDOS the bad guys... at least not without either using the tactics of the bad guys, or getting caught... =(
Actually, I'm working on a project that is already annoying spammers who use information gathering type spams(sign up to refinance your homeloan, get rich quick...). Although distributed, it's not really a denial of service attack. I can't find any laws that suggest that what I am doing is illegal, and if it was it would be hard to prosecute anyone participating in my system.
Check it out...
Most of my spam comes from my friends and family. Is there any legal recourse I can take against them? Can I sue my grandma for sending me a picture of the worlds largest cat?
You mean like a D.A.R.E program for SPAM? I can just imagine a nerdy computer tech going into every 6th grade classroom to tell kids to stay away from websites offering penis enlargement pills. That'll go over real well.
I am currently in three figures a day of spam mail and looking for willing people to gang up and lynch the spammers.
I find a lot of people who don't really want a clean inbox: they just want revenge. So do I. If you download my free software you can be part of a vigilante mob with hardley any effort. Unsolicited Commando
Before we can evaluate the cost of SETI@home we need to ask ourselves an important question regarding its purpose: Have they found and fucking aliens yet?
Sorry, interstate commerce is not controlled by the states. The law cannot and does not apply to spammers who work out of the jurisdiction of Missouri.
I don't think this is true. If you operate in one state and the effect of your operation is in another you exopose yourself to their laws. And yeah, interstate commerce may not be controlled by the states, but the letter of anti-spam laws may not be based on commerce regulation, rather interference with electronic communications.
Hmmm... he lied to customers, gleefully took their money, and wasted communication resources. I know many states like Texas have fines in place. Even here in California on Jan 1st 2004 fines will be $1000 per UCE, but no matter how much the fines are as long as there is no jail time the fines will just become part of their business plan.
right, we also need a national do-not-survey-or-campaign-or-fund-raise call. until then, be sure to tell every such group that bothers you to never ever call again.
Dude, why would I want that? Arnold Schwarzenegger called me this morning...
I know there are a lot of these dynamic websites out that generate random emails and links to infinitely more pages with more emails and links... Does anyone have any evidence of these things actually working? Does anyone have any record of a spider getting caught in one of these?
I hate to abuse this forum, but I'm basically doing more or less what you describe. The only difference is that I'm not targetting retail spams as placing fake credit card numbers is pretty much illegal. I'm mostly targeting information gathering spams like the refinance your debt ones.
Ummmm... isn't the nature of a dictionary attack such that they just try all character combinations in sequence? I don't see how random letters/numbers would help you in that case. Maybe you could just always use zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz@domain.com
It seems possible that if a spammer were to improve their response rate using some technique and that translated into sending out less spam, they would need fewer computers, less bandwidth, etc... They could charge less money for their services and drive the other less sophisticated spammers out of business.
But I guess email is so cheap, this had better be one AMAZING technique to have any impact on valume.
DON'T DO IT!!!

Actually, only interstate feces is under federal jurisdiction.
Dear Mrs. Fox, Please don't send any spam to taibmaps@astrobastards.net. Thanks! Yours truly,

"Why don't you just hit delete?" Why don't you have fun refusing charges all day?

I have a software system that does precisely what you describe. The client software is FREE.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the police report said if his dick was an extra 3"?
I use a good ol' jpeg file. Has never ever let me down. Not even once. Also, I've got a spider trap on my website.

Yeah, I don't understand the article. It seems so fucking arbitrary. Why didn't they include vacuum tubes?
Also, if you go to his website, you might want to hit reload 1000 times.

The internet is not a place.... actually, there is this website with these awesome chicks on it... God, please let that be a real place.

We will need to bring back vigilante mobs and lynchings. Of course, I'm totally in favor of this.
