Well XML/RPC is basically taking the place of DCOM/COM/blah blah blah.... and the.Net, what a wonderful idea that is. Yeah sure Bill, I will trust you with my data!
BUT to add to this Sun has done a lot with the new HotSpot server and threading with it is a lot better! With the Blackdown JVM i would consistently have a server (running maybe 15 threads) take down the JVM almost constantly if 'sunwjit' was used! I have seen this problem a lot less with the hotspot server which i am currently running on a slackware 7 system with linux 2.4.0!
One idea might be to setup Solaris 8 on an intel box, or get a Ultra 10 (they are pretty cheap) and see how things work there!
Also, there are many ways you could shoot yourself in the foot with that many threads ? Could GC be a problem ? Are you reusing the threads correctly ? Lots of stuff to think off that could cause problem! You might want to look at "Taming Java Threads" by Allen Holub... good read and could help you!
just my $0.02
there are a lot of things you learn and see in college when doing CS that are nothing short of art! Its much like paintings and music... you uappreciate what you can understand. Sometimes things just look like dumb lines of abstract paint...... well maybe you have not got the artists eye about colors and emotions! Just like that what may seem like scribles on the computer screen and a whole bunch of parentheses to an averge computer users looks to me like an awesome bit of code in Scheme! its a matter of how you look at it...... and BY THE WAY, a lot of coders spend considerable ammounts of time (at least when in college) to make their code sexy!
but is it also moral to expect a street orphan on the streets of Calcutta not to work, especially when it is the only way he will make money
How about paying him enough so he can learn at the same time ? Or maybe do a parttime learning/ parttime working setup ? You are so full of shit, read my other post and get a clue.....
Better yet, why does'nt Nike just give some money to NGO's in India working to educate the masses and help them get out of life they are in now.....you are just buying into the FUD that Nike generates!
Well i agree with some of what you said, the part about avg. income in 3rd world nations (developing countries for the p.c.) being under a grand a year. BUT you have got to be kidding me about the bit about the starving kids who dont mind working. Tell me, have you ever met one of these kids you seem to be talking about with so much confidence ? ?
Well let me tell you something, I have met some of the kids that work for sweatshops, it was not in Vietnam, and not for Nike. I am talking about teenagers who had spent a good part of their youth working in Carpet making factories in Pakistan.... They were these were the lucky ones that got out due to the intervention of NGO's. They were getting paid, yes BUT it was not even enough to feed themselves with a good meal (rice and onions alone is not what i term good) at the end of the day. And you really think its fair for any kid to not be able to go outside and play ?
And if you are wondering why they are working if they are not forced to? The reason is that the parents of these children dont send them to the schools in most causes...... they can make some money if they start working NOW! Take away the sweatshops and you end up with some kids actually getting an education, hell if nothing the kids get to enjoy themselves a bit. Its very easy to see that this is a very vicious cycle and only helps big Corp's rake in the multi-million dollars profits year in and year out!
SO, before you go off on a rant to blame/. readers and NGO's and activists in this area, think a bit, go and read about the lives these ppl. lead!
you can teach anyone to code.... but can you teach them theory of computation is the real question.
My dare to you sir (Original Poster) is to write a quick program for the traveling salesman problem. Its quiet easy to write on that does an exhuastive search. Start with say 5 cities, and move up to say 13, you will be very very suprized by how few cities a "modern pc" can really handle!
consultant --> Techie Hooker
consulting firm --> the Pimp!
its a comparison that i keep hearing... and hey its funny, so dont start a flame. Hell when i was in college i was pimped out many a times to do troubleshooting (low class techie hooker;)
then you do a make..The reason i believe was that make would then go into each subdir and use the make -j2 command rather than just go serial after the top dir ? Hmmm been some time so i am not completely sure, but thats what i recall..... anyone have more info on that, and should they have done something like that ?
OK so i have to clear up things a bit more i guess... We do have a QA setup which is pretty much a replica (outside of load balancing and failover drives). So the reason to use Linux is simple, this box is going to be used by the developers for pure development, and its basic reason for being is to be a Database server for the developers, there will be some other 2450 Dell, and Sun 420 boxes that are actually going to run the App/Development servers... developer workstations are pretty lean. so all this box has to be able to do is beat the price/performance of a sun box, be relatively easy to maintain and show good uptime... all of which have been the case with a Dell 620 (Dual Xeon, 1Gig running Slackware). Now I am beginning to think that win2k would be an interesting test... will post once its done
well i was thinking about running Win2k on it, and to tell you the truth i dont have a great reason not tooo.....are you running on a similar config ? and were you using 2.4, cause 4 cpu smp is supposed to be much better with the new kernel.....
We just got a Dell 6450 with 4 proc's and 4 Gigs of RAM to run Oracle on. I took a lot of work to get the box here, we have been running mostly on Sun 420R's and I think that for development Linux should be used... convincing anyone on the use of Redhat for production is a very tough sell.. thats the next step.... Now the question is that I have been a user of Slackware for 4 years now and am very happy with it, heck its running Oracle on a dual proc box alread! BUT i have to put RedHat on this, cause of the support option and wanted to know if someone else out there has had a good experience with RedHat and Oracle ? I really want to use 2.4 cause of the Smp support amongst other things......
I would not move to redhat on my own boxes or any of the smaller servers, BUT on the other hand i want to get Linux on this box, and that means i have to play ball with others and move to redhat!
Got any advice ? Links to sites ? stories ? ?
OK so i am not at an expert on the field (if you are comments would be good). But here is what i am thinking, what happens when ppl. get to decide who to clone and how much to clone ? The idea would be (from what i recall about a discussion of this in Internation Times) that you have a kid, and you can at a later date get a clone of it... Now this in itself does not sound that bad right, but it does lead to the question that what happens when someone has a damn smart kid/a great soccer player/or ms. portman ? ? I mean if you think about it seriously you are going to be able to get rid of a lot of genetic fuck ups! This can then go along with the idea of being able to stop a birth of someone who might be born with a desease, hell just use a clone of a GOOD baby! This gets rid of the fact that you might have a kid thats not PERFECT! Damn, is it not natural for there to be differences/weaknesses in ppl... and is this mutation not essential ? ?
Then of course the artile mentions that ----"The effort will be to assist couples that have no other alternatives to reproduce and want to have their own biological child, not somebody else's eggs or sperm", Well sadly thats life and you ahve to live with it... i know a lot of couples that could not have kids and went with the idea of adoptions, and are doing fine.
accenture is the kind of company that makes its money from providing consulting services to companies that are "in tough times", so i am willing to bet that they are gonna do just fine!
The reason for the change in name was more of a market move as they become more directed towards the tech firm.....
so with a lot of the companies that had the big adds last year gone (ie. they are on f$!@dcompany.com) this year, you think this was a concern to HotJobs.com ? I mean Etrade actually has some money that comes in from its users... Hmm. lets see if we lose any from this year!
Game got boring, but the three fg's in 40 some seconds was worth the time!
Its funny cause that was also one of the reason we gave to not go with flash (well apart form the fact that you could not recieve the xml using an app serverlike Tomcat!).... But as you noted, there is the ability to make a library and it would be interesting to see one that worked as well as Swing, cause then thre would be good reason to take a look at flash again!
This is in my mind some really really sexy code.
I guess you can call is OSS, you see it in almost every Programming Language book that uses scheme or something like scheme/lisp.... to see what it does check out Y-Combinator Derivation . So the basic idea is to be able to have a recursive func. that does not have a name.....
(define Y
(lambda (m)
((lambda (f) (m (lambda (a) ((f f) a))))
(lambda (f) (m (lambda (a) ((f f) a)))))))
As the last post mentions the new version of Flash5 with its actionscript is a good alternative. It does allow good control on UI and is much better now in doing sersious work. THe ability to use XML to get/send data to the server was pretty interesting when we looked at it back when it first camme out. A few things we found..... XML works very nicely to do most things (data in tables/other forms/reports) and was easy to setup on the client side. The client side is damn light and is pretty fast, not to mention it worked (we did not do anything TOO fancy, just the basics) on both Linux/Mac and windows. We did not do tooo much testing but it was nice..... the thing that caused problems was how the damn xml was being sent back.... i believe its content-type was NOT set to text/xml but rather application/x-www-form-urlencoded which caused way to many problems (hell i had to hack into JakartaTomcats code to get anything to work!)....... dont know if they have fixed this yet.
try it out and see if it fills your needs, its a bit pricy to get the developer licience, but actionscript is pretty nice with the new changes and most things work well. Damn developer env. is not avail. on linux (runs ok in vmware though!)
Well XML/RPC is basically taking the place of DCOM/COM/blah blah blah.... and the .Net, what a wonderful idea that is. Yeah sure Bill, I will trust you with my data!
Now that was one interview to remember!!! Posh Spice (I dont know the right spelling...) was one Brit B.
Jon Stewart... you rock
A very very sound idea!
BUT to add to this Sun has done a lot with the new HotSpot server and threading with it is a lot better! And i would pay to see a scene like that! Sure beats the hell out of most sitcoms today
News Flash..
Smoking amongst gamers reduced by almost 50% as the Powers that be released a study claiming that Smoking near computer may reduce FPS!
you can take our code..... but you can never take our freedom.
right click on the drive and choose format, quick format is nice and fast!!!
;)

yeah.... seems to be missing... just when i had something to maybe replace shout! BUT IceCast rocks, a very stable mp3 streamer!

SO, before you go off on a rant to blame
Heres a good picture of a nice Nike related T-shirt that may interest some of you!
someone provide mirrors for the pic please!

what do you ppl. think ? ? ?
The noise you hear is the sound of thousands of single-CPU /. readers typing "make -j3 bzImage".
SOMEONE PLEASE MOD IT UP TO SUPER FUNNY!!! darn i posted too early!!!
so from what i recall we would do a:
alias make='make -j2'
then you do a make..The reason i believe was that make would then go into each subdir and use the make -j2 command rather than just go serial after the top dir ?
