  1. Ahh the wonder that is benchmarking software! on MySQL Developer Contests PostgreSQL Benchmarks · · Score: 2

Some extremely valid points. In particular you need to remember that all tests were using ODBC drivers! This can be one hell of a bottle neck for performance since each DB is very different!
The article doesn't mention anything about this or even with which ODBC driver they used the different databases.

The Great Bridge article did not mention in any detail what sort of transactions were being used on any of the DB's, what specific versions of the ODBC drivers were being used, with what OS and what tweaking! I rememeber that a lather large update into Infomix was tweaked by an Informix engineer using from 14 hours to 6 hours!! This was running EU10K's with nothing else on those beasts.... so there is always a lot of room for tweaking a DB's... Benchmarks MUST therefore be taken with a big chunk of salt.

There is a lot to think off for any company when looking at a database, and one of the first words you will hear is support!! Well following the great OSS model like many other companies in many other areas of technology we have a company that can support PostgreSQL!!Landmark has now publicly announced the formation of their company, called Great Bridge, to provide commercial support for PostgreSQL. -- PostgreSQL webpage

The test shows that postgresql is good, and having used it for some coursework some time ago I can say that I am kinda suprized. MySql was a hell of a lot faster at the time and was so cause it provided next to nothing from the SQL-92 standard (BUT then again its not trying to say it does... its freaking awesome for webstuff... the winner handsdown).

Have always seem postgresql as the DB you use when you can't afford a copy of the two unamed db's!! ORACLE and INFORMIX....unless they were talk about FoxPro and DB2 ? I guess it is the choice when you want to learn about databases and dont want to be limited to what MySql can offer. I used it and it was just what i needed. Since then they have gone ahead and added better mechanisms for foriegn keys, better support for triggers and procedures and a slew of other stuff that Oracle and Informix have had for years.
The GUI interfaces for it have also become much nicer to use and all in all its pretty good for most tasks..

BUT, i am not sure how this article can claim it beat the TWO BIG DB's cause they still have a hell of a lot more functionality and that will of course cause a little bit of a speed hit! I mean I am all for this software, i used it as an alternative to MicroSoft Access (hehe could this be one of the two big ones ? or SQLServer ? ?) and it rocked! SO its good to see it was a clear winner... in speed of transactions processed! The PostgreSQL team is doing some good work and thats always good to see, but maybe we should take some of these benchmarks with a pinch of salt!! Just a warning, having used it, Informix and Oracle, i would be careful to just say speed is all you want. I mean there are a lot of things to consider, like how locking works with each, how rollbacks are handled and what kind of isolation levels are available ? This is something you dont have to worry about till you are doing a full product! well just my views.... a warning i guess!

  10. A new model for OSS. on Does Open Source Separate Business From Technology? · · Score: 1

The entire idea of saying that the reason we have buggy software is due to "the suits" is a bit harsh to say the least. Yes, it is true that the current business model does put a lot of power in the hands of upper level management, as far as deadlines and product placement are concerned. BUT, it must be remembered that it must have been a bad programming idea to start with that caused the bug. I mean there is no excuse for bad programming, and a lot of times the commercial software houses are trying to stop it as well. By having Best coding practices, requirements for documentation and all the other jazz you have to go through a business is just trying to make sure that all the coders are on the same page!

That said, lets go to the new OSS model of business. First of all there is very little worry about trying to motivate coders. The software project does not start till someone thinks its a good idea and if it becomes widely accepted the number of hackers (Hey i used it right) ready to help improve things will be there!!!
Now by having ppl. code for something just cause they want to will mean that a lot of the motivation and other practices that a normal software house must do are not needed. It is also true that the style of writing software does tend to get the best ppl. for the job! I say this cause like the question asks, you dont have an idiot coding the most important stuff!! THe idea is that each person selects for him/herself the area they want to work on. With this self selection you get arround the problem of delegating responsibility.

Now, what about the business side of things. I agree that at times the businesss side, the "suits" can take things a bit far, but there has to be some money in OSS for things to work. And clearly there is a lot of money... NOT in the price of the software but its the services and suspport that you can setup to use OSS that has the real money. And this is where the businesses are coming along. REDHAT, they are working to provide these services and are giving hte world what it wants, support and some assurance that when things go wrong we will be there for you!!

Now where does this leave the suits and the buggy software.... Well they are still arround trying to make a few bucks out of the whole deal. BUT since the code is not ":theirs" anymore and dont control the tech. ppl. the code will get mroe time to get completed and the releases will be hopefully better!

SO why are the suits now futher away from the tech ? Well there is going to be no money in the software itself! Hahaha, its free.... what are you going to do, make a few bucks on shipping and handling :) Well now they are onto the other areas where you canmake money... SUPORT and INSTALATION and DOCUMENTATION and WHATNOT!!! So i guess with better sfotware we can be ready for buggy support and a whole slew of marketing for "THE BETTER LINUX ! "
