I'll be buying my Rio Karma with OGG support ASAP. Maybe the majority of the population will follow what mac tells them, in an attempt to be trendy (and because they're "tech n00bs" so they can act like they're in the know by displaying their ipod, and repeating crap that apple tells them), but it doesn't mean that apple is right, or that the ipod is actually good.
when i pull a door that says "push", i dont call for asistance. you'd happily provide assistance for 1000 people a day who pulled on a door named "push", even though your job has so much more potential?
i have a similar, but worth situation to yours. i really wanna buy one, but i know that there's a risk of it having HDD failure. if the HDD does have a problem, it will fail within warrenty.. but as an australian, it would cause big trouble for me still, since they're only available in america
Yes it has external harddrive function, but to use this, you have to have a peice of software installed on the computer called "taxi" or something. so if i wanted to move some files from my computer to yours, i'd have to install taxi on mine, put the files on the karma, go to your place, install taxi on yours, transfer the files.
this is somewhat of a pain, because it means you have to carry the taxi CD with you if you want to use the handdrive feature.. which means you wont randomly be at a friends house, see some files you want, and transfer them (unless you alwys plan on having the cd with you)
I'm 90% sure my info is correct, unless they fixed this really recently. They have said that they will fix this though
buy a rio karma. better sound quality (remotely), better battery life ("15 hours"), plays more formats (ogg, flac). much cheaper (can get em for $230 pretty easily)
on the downside, they currently have no remote and cant work as a USB harddrive without the use of additional software. fortunately, rio are constantly updating the player with new features, and are in the process of making it work as a usb harddrive.
Minidiscs are alright (i own a sony N10 [top model]). It depends what you like though. They do have great battery life, but this is at the expensive of the amp.. so thanks to their weak amps, the sound quality isn't great. they're really good for the average joe, who (shock horror) uses the stock earbuds, and is happy with things like 128kbps mp3.. but as a music fan the weak amp annoys me (which is why i'm buying a karma, and have just built a portable amp)
I wonder if this was somewhat of a publicity stunt?

No, I don't think so. It was never the fastest production car. Perhaps fastest domestic production car... But I'm afraid Porche, Ferrari, and Lotus have always been quite far ahead of anyone in the fastest production cars department...

i'd consider a vehicle which can perform incredibly impressive physical feats to be just as awesome as a supercomputer.
When was the last time that you ran from 0-60mph in 5 seconds?
Using a supercomputer for word processing is kinda boring. Maybe you should stop using your car just to get from point A to point B

Whats the point of drag racing a VIPER? Its a track car. Meant for road courses. Not drag racing. Straight line speed is about as useless in determining a car's overall performance as autocross. You want a real test of performace? Go to a track. And make sure it has more than just left turns.
Viper was the fastest stock production car in the 1/4 mile for a long time (might still be). Aditionally, his SER would probably be able to take on the viper around a track too, since it's lighter (better cornering), and has better acceleration (since he can beat it in a drag). He would have to put some money into brakes and suspention and maybe body stiffening... but it'd still be cheaper by a long shot

Just to be noted from the article: However, because this year the screeners carried invisible markings for the first time, the studios were able to identify the Academy member for whom they had been intended.
If everyone who gets a copy of movies knows that they're traceable, wont this seriously cut back the amount of people willing to get screeners onto the internet? I know if I was given screeners and occaisionally leaked them, i'd stop right now (at least until I found out what these "invsible markings" were, and how to remove them)
I have trouble understanding how companies caring about profits is bad. They have their shareholder owners in mind. If you want to be someone that companies care about, call your broker and buy a piece of the company.
Because for society to best function, the needs of the general public should be met above the needs of a few people who are fortunate enough to have the money to buy a peice of a company. And because this has more levels then just money. How about a company which cares about your privacy above their profits? that would be nice wouldn't it. but the companies dont even care about their shareholders when it comes to that. They'll happily strip the privacies of their shareholders in order to increase profits. and the shareholders will yell out "dont stop!! more!!"
Perhaps they have simply found a model where these two things are not mutually exclusive.
Of course, but i'm willing to bet that 99% of the time they didn't say to themselves "I know, i'll sacrifice my income/profits in order to benefit the public!". They do say "hey, if we help the public out a little, our public image will rise and so will our profits".
As I said, they're helping the consumer only because they know they'll make money out of it.
Almost no corporations care about the consumer. they care about profits, and profits. and if they look like they care about the consumer, they're only doing it to raise profits, not because they actually care.
What's scary is, the consumer doesn't care either. Maybe it's because we're trapped between one crap company and another, but no one does anything to protect themselves. The company will employ anything to raise profits, and although it may invade our privacy, the consumers dont care.
We're getting fucked, and are yelling out "MORE!! DONT STOP!!"
Aerogel is relatively expensive primarily because it is currently made in very limited quantities. While increasing the scale of aerogel production will reduce the cost, the basic process and raw materials are still somewhat costly. For relatively small quantities of aerogel the cost is about $1.00 per cubic centimeter for one liter.
i said puchasing power, not exchange rate. there's a big difference. the currency is at a higher numerical value ("1.80 usd"), but things cost more (once exchange rate is applie) then they would in america. so if you're in england, and you have 1 pound, you could buy 1.15 times as much "stuff" then if you had 1 USD in america.
i dont think that it's always fair to use exchange rates for things like CDs and online music.
it's the purchasing power of the currency that matters. although a pound may be worth more than a dollar when it's exchanged, people in england get paid in pounds, and purchase everything in pounds. it doesn't matter (directly) to them how many USD their pound is worth. they only care about what they can buy in england with their pound
i think a pound has the purchasing power of about 1.15 USD or so. that means, that with 1 pound, you should be expected to be able to buy about 1.15 times as much stuff then if you had 1 USD. Thus, in england they should only have to pay ~0.86 pounds per song (0.99/1.15).
