this might be silly of me but isn't $ the symbol of the US Dollar?
now this is just a question, but is the fine the equivalent of 1200 USD or is it 1200 Chinese money(??)?(I hate to admit that I don't know what the currency is in China)
By the time I got to this there was well over 400 comments
If you looked carefully at the background, you could see "defaced by realhack" written as a shadow, partially covered by some parts of the hacked text.
The day before Thanksgiving I bought my first Mac (a 12in Ibook 1.2 Gig, and I talked the salesperson out of a bag and an extra 256Megs of Ram)
I for one will probably not be buying this book until I need it. Thus far I have been able to install everything I need to run my Linux Apps, and have loaded Gtk2 and Gkrellm and got them running without a hitch with Fink.
It took me about 6 hours of messing around with this laptop and saying to myself "I Hate Mac OSX-nix why am I doing this to myself" untill I had some kind of breakthrough, and I'm feeling much more comfortable; don't get me wrong, I love Linux and KDE (just MHO) but if this is as stable as I'm told since all I do with a laptop is check Email, web, Light linux admin and development, this laptop is nice with great battery life and light.
I am glad that this book is available, even if there is another pussycat in the wings. I don't think I will be upgrading right away, and good resources can be hard to come by.
I wish Safari had a web spellcheck.

some time between 95-97 I got the best bitch slap
on
Linus Interviewed
·
· Score: 5, Interesting
I can't remember exactly but some time between 95 and 97 I was installing Linux and I was a true newbie to *nix back then. I had some major prob with the install and I wrought Linus a rather scathing Email. A few weeks later I got the best bitch slap of my life.
I wish I saved that Email is was so elegant and worded so perfectly that I became a Linux / Linus Zealot (it was not a nice responce from Linus).
This interview just reminds me that I need to be more Linus like in my day to day life (I'm a bit hot tempered) and really think when I talk, or act Email, or post to/..
for me I lived most of the 70's with little TV, then no TV for the 80's and most of the 90's. I now have a TV that's on allot, not that I'm watching it but when I do it's usually science television and I have a Sunday Date with someone and HBO. I'll have to say The Science Channel is getting tied maybe this will make for more consistant and better shows on the Educational / "Learning" channels.
I have a 3 year old son who when sees a M$ windows Logo Groans "Ewww Yukky windows"
so we have changed what we use call the windows in our house to (GNU/Air Holes)
Any way no I would not use M$ anything even if they changed and started using the Linux or BSD Kernel and open soursed the whole company. I'm sure it would still be a security risk.
No, No, No friends don't let friends... you know the rest!
You know if you read "Just For Fun" That Linus was courted by Mac for OSX-nix and you would get an Idea why he didn't go to work for them.
I would like the apps, and the UI ported to PC *NIX but I like having the freedom to have the hardware I want even if it's non-standard.
The Darwin Port has been around for a while with a specific hardware list (which is so Mac) I'll switch Distros I'll even use different kernels but to say I would jump ship and run OSX/Darwin because it's there well I would have save that answer for answering the questin "Why did I climb that Mountain"
I am using Linux Not freeBSD at least Mac could port Aqua to FreeBSD it is underneath it all FreeBSD-PPC right?
This is one of the best things I've ever read about AT&T and the internal tech if not the best.
Any way I'm a former insider via proxy working on mostly R&D hiring for AT&T, Lucent, Telcordia for a consulting recruiting company in NJ a few years back. When my wife called me from the car all wigged out about hearing a news item on some news station that AT&T was looking at Linux to replace desktops she told me to contact some of my friends there about offering to help.
So I did and the guy I decided to email is a managing director at research.att.com (I had a history of working on project finding him bleeding edge Linux people mostly engineers and admin) and his responce was "Yes, I also read in the news about the Linux thing, and no, I'm not involved in it."
So I'm wondering who is testing the viability of OSX-nix and Linux.
I would have to say that IMHO that Linux is the way to go if this is for real. Based on the fact that there are loads of PC x86 stuff laying around there and that Mac Seems to be (and don't quot me on this) a closed Architecture system and there is a limit to off the shelf hardware you can use and since I'm sure there are a few hardcore UNIX programmers still in the confines of the walls at AT&T and loads of open source work done on all kinds of things there is a good chance that any hardware issues they might run into most of the work is out in the WWW somewere and small amounts of tweeking if any would need to be done to get most of the hardware / software working for this big move and as well you said that they are tight right now and the upgraded PC's can stay to live a second life.
that's my 2 cents
forgive the spelling and grammer I survived a massive head injury in my teens and now I'm only as good as my spellchecker.

Sorry if I offended you I was only gooffing hell I'm of Irish desent I get a load of jokes myself.
Heres to going to where a few men have gone before with a remote controle car
OK so you needed an enterprise DB 2 years ago Oracle was one of your only option, but the ski resort and php / MySQL that is a prob with the developer not Linux or linux support. there are and have been quite a few PHP / *SQL products available with an open-source license that just need a bit of tweeking to make your own and most of them work well and have some sort of on-line payment system built right in.
IMHO the ski resort tossed the baby with the bath water and are blaming compleat incompetence on behalf of the developer on linux.
Or this whole thing is a farce all brewed up by M$ to add a bit of FUD back into the Linux market which has been enjoying a lull in the amount of bad mouthing it receives from media. We all know that E-week, CRM, and many other Magazines that ship more free copy's than paid subscriptions are really just sluts willing to publish opinions of the highest bidders.

The thing is I registered 22 domain names with bulkregister.com and 2 with stargate.com. Thing where good for about 2 years and then I moved into a new house, new town, same state. we where in the house for about 2 months (November 2003). Then all hell broke lose as a markiting target I became a hotspot for email, and now telephone marketers and most of it was due to 2 of my domain names. when I moved I had to chase down passwds and account names for 3 different registrars and I changed the contact info for all of them and luckily I had everything available and not in boxes.
So to get to the point here with a law that makes fraudulent whois records a crime at what point dose not updating records make you a criminal?
And I didn't sigh on to opt in on every email list selling sex, drugs, or rock and roll or any other possible thing in the world that's hitting my spam filters
Domain names are not merely the objects of trademark disputes, they are also important facilitating elements for online speech. Just as it is legal to publish a book or broadsheet with no indicia of authorship or publisher, it should be legal and possible to publish a website or other Internet communication without such identification. Indeed, in the United States, anonymous speech is a constitutionally protected right. Most domain names do not conflict with trademark rights, and ICANN would be overreaching its mandate to subordinate broad free speech interests to this relatively narrow concern.
