  1. Re:Fuel running out on Voyager 1 Reaches Interstellar Space · · Score: 1

It's only got a few things it needs to do: keep the antenna pointed (roughly) at Earth, run the few instruments still active (the camera, for example, has been turned off), and occasionally communicate.

  2. Re:Even if it does, will it be able to tell us? on Voyager 1 Reaches Interstellar Space · · Score: 3, Informative

What's the range of communications for the probe? When will we lose our connection (if we haven't already)?

No one knows for certain. A number of factors enter in, including the ability of Voyager to keep its antenna pointed at Earth, the amount of power left in the radiothermal generator, the size of radio telescope available for communicating with it on Earth, and possibly unknown effects from the heliopause.

  3. Re:to paraphrase on Voyager 1 Reaches Interstellar Space · · Score: 5, Interesting

    Detailed answer: Yes.

Questions that can still be investigated by Voyager include a number of questions about the interaction between the solar wind, solar magnetic field, and interstellar medium, direct measurements of the interstellar magnetic field, the actual composition of interstellar gas, where exactly the heliopause lies, and how it's affected by changes in solar activity. I'm sure there are even more questions that I haven't thought of.

IIRC, John Caramack is funding the Armadillo Aerospace effort out of his own pockets. Burt Rutan, of SpaceShipOne, is a noted airplane designer and could be either self-funding the effort, or using his name to get funding. I don't know about the other attempts.

Nothing is mentioned about static testing of the engine; what the article talks about is that in-flight ignition of the engine hasn't been tested yet. I'd assume that whoever's making the engine has done plenty of static (test-stand) testing.

They are much more likely to remove the GPL'd code than they are to open up their product.

As was pointed out in the forums, they've got a third option:

Or licence it independently. There's nothing in the GPL to prevent you from comming to a seperate understanding with the author(s) of the GPL code, and using it under whatever terms you find mutually agreable.

The GPL is not "viral" and does not prevent rational solutions to cases like this. Let's not feed the FUDsters.
