No, I had been using a copy of Word 97 for that long because I was not in a position to buy a updated copy of office. When I finally got rid of that computer, I was working at a place that got me a discount on office. Then three years later, they realized (for some reason) they had no resume on file for me and wanted an updated resume. At that point, I had to try to open a 3+ year outdated resume built originally in 1999.

I don't use office day to day. In fact the ONLY document I've ever written was my resume. I don't change jobs yearly, so is it really hard to believe I've only updated the resume a few times in a decade? Why would I pay hundreds of dollars just to get updated versions of a application I never open except for once every few years?

The only reason I get Office 2008 was because of the huge discount i was able to get. The only reason I bought iWork was because I was teaching a class at a community college and wanted to use keynote. BTW, keynote is awesome.

I had used a resume template to build the resume. I kinda liked it and have stayed with it. The template had lines drawn on it. These lines were moved all over the page and the text blocks were also not aligned. Basically, it would require a re-write.

This was done because my current job didn't have a copy of my resume on file, so I wanted to update it before giving it to them.

Recently, I've started re-desiging it anyways just to come up with something modern to feel out the market. I'm using Apple's pages now.

Honestly, I like iWork over office or openoffice.

My work is pushing open office right now. We have it easy as most outbound documents are published as pdf. The transition for us has been seamless. We are dual piloting office 2007 and open office. More users are leaning to open office because the interface of 2007 is 'scary'.

I wrote my resume in Word 97. I needed to update it recently and found that it did not look correct at all in Office 2008. I was forced to use open office. After saving it as Office XP in open office it opened in Office 2008 just fine.

Look at it this way. I bought a wii for homebrew. I then bought 4 controls, 4 nunchucks, 4 classic controllers, 4 game cube controllers, etc. Then I bought some wii games that I thought were neat (zelda, mario, etc). There are new games out there that I might buy (the new metroid re-release, etc).

I also buy virtual console games before using my downloaded roms because a lot of those virtual console games have been modified to fit my TV better and I want to support nintendo.

However, if this update bricks my system, or if any future update stops home brew, then I'm done. I'm not going to buy any more nintendo games, any more VC games, etc. So by preventing me from using homebrew, they cost themselves those precious sales.

Honestly, most of the games released for the wii are crap. I bought the wii for virtual console. A lot of the games I want are not on virtual console, so I have homebrew. Take that away and you have just enough of a breaking point for me to say "Fuck it" and just build a small pc to do the same thing.

My company no longer requires me to write to IE6. In fact they don't even care if it fails gracefully in IE6. I however tend to make sure my sites fail gracefully even if javascript and css are not functioning properly.

Our internal websites are different, they have to work in IE7/IE8 but do not have to be perfect. For example, one site had nice rounded corners that everyone loved. However the method I was using was not implemented in IE yet (It's a safari/firefox thing). I could of been forced to write javascript to do this in IE. But instead we just decided it wasn't worth it.

Another example is a long running report we have. It takes a long time to get the data. To improve the feel of the report I rewrote it be dynamic and have sortable columns and real time updates to options (year, etc). Firefox and safari handle this wonderfully. IE7 and IE8 simply barf on the amount of data. It can take minutes to refresh. Some of the sorting simply crashes the browser completely. It was decided to just remove the crashing features from IE and put a disclaimer about the sort time. No point in trying to figure out how to speed it up when it works almost instantly in firefox/safari.
