win2k RTM'd in the last 2 weeks.. I certainly hope they plan a server upgrade.

Not sure what calendar they use in your world, but Win2K went gold over a month ago, and prior to that, Microsoft had many partners that were using the Release Candidates and even Beta 3 in production environments. In fact, I attended a Microsoft seminar in the summer where one of the segments showed Microsoft switching their entire campus over to Win2K, long before RTM, just to show how much confidence they had in their betas. They also showed one of the world's biggest oil companies (I can't recall which one) switching to Win2K because it was easier to use than NT4 for managing remote sites and roaming users. It's not something I would do, but it does go to show that even the biggest companies in the world were running their business on an "unstable beta product."

  10. Time Warner already working on local news content on Reactions to AOL/Time-Warner Merger · · Score: 1

    Regarding Marty Bass's comments:

I can't imagine that this merger will in any way affect local news gathering or viewing. To duplicate the job we do would require setting up a newsroom.

It seems Time Warner is already working on providing local news channels to the larger markets. In December, Time Warner had a very public battle here in Columbus with the local media conglomerate that owns the local CBS affiliate and the city's daily newspaper. The local company has been running a regional news network called the Ohio News Network for the past several years and they wanted Time Warner to add it to their channel line-up. TW refused, saying they did not have the capacity to do this. As a result, the local company threatened to pull the CBS affiliate from TW cable unless ONN was carried. Full page ads were run in the daily and weekly newspapers in town and television ads were run by both companies. Engineers were interviewed by both sides of the issue to support/refute the capacity claims. TW was offering antennae to their customers in case CBS was pulled. Eventually, a settlement was reached, but not before it was revealed that Time Warner has plans to offer their own regional news networks in the next few years in Ohio and other large markets. So yes, local media outlets do have reason to worry as AOLTW will have plenty of resources at their disposal to get such a thing running and integrated with the Internet. And surely they could avoid providing a broken link on WJZ's website to the local news that Marty feels can't be reproduced.

Interesting to remember the corporate connections that some news organizations have, especially with the AOL-Time Warner mega-merger and its future implications in news reporting. Can we really expect unbiased reporting on this type of case from a news organization whose sister companies are movie studios Warner Bros and New Line Cinema, and whose sister companies HBO and Cinemax surely doesn't benefit from home DVD viewing?

  12. Yes Vote by AOL Shareholders not a sure bet on AOL and Time Warner Confirm Merger Plans · · Score: 1

There are quite a few AOL shareholders on the various stock message boards that are quite upset with this deal, especially considering it has not benefited AOL's stock at all while the TW folks are making out like bandits. Of course this is a rather small sample, but this merger must meet the shareholders' approval, and this isn't a sure bet. TW stock has gone up 50% today, and TW shareholders will receive 1.5 shares in AOL-TW for each share they hold in TW. AOL stock, on the other hand, is down over 1 point today, and AOL stockholders will receive 1 share of AOL-TW for every 1 share of AOL stock they hold.

This is ironic since the online services have only become true ISP's in the last couple of years. I can remember 4-5 years ago when AOL was just starting to allow web access for its customers. Prodigy and CompuServe were much the same at that time. Up until that time, they were totally self-sufficient and cut off from the rest of the Internet. They provided all content to their millions of subscribers.

  22. Better article at NY Times on New Yorker Accidentally Gets $1M WebTV Prototype · · Score: 5

The article cited in the /. summary does a horrible job of telling the story. Check out this article at the NY Times for a better recap. Seems the NYPD unit involved was the Computer Investigative Unit, which is certainly appropriate due to the fact that this was suspected industrial espionage. At the time, it was suspected that the shipping labels may have been intentionally switched in order to steal the device. In hindsight, the police did overreact since this turned out to be a mistake rather than industrial espionage. To be fair, they didn't know if they were knocking on the door of a pregnant wife (they were) or a corporate spy. Also, the device was in the hand's of the banker's father, who is an attorney. Regardless of our opinions of MS, a prototype of one of their more popular products that is more than a year from market probably is worth $1 million to them or their competitors, and when something like this ends up in NY rather than Seattle, you can bet there will be some pretty beefy law enforcement involved. I'm sure a similar case with a big company like GM, Ford, IBM, Apple, etc. would result in similar police response.
