I was showing my friend how to get a paypal account, and had him sign up, the whole time warning him about phishing emails. "Never click the paypal link in an email. Go there on the browser."
He signed up using a hotmail.com address, and the "verify your account" email came back phished by microsoft passport.
The email had an IP address in the href= for the link. The IP address resolved back to a passport.microsoft.com address block.
They wanted him to sign in to paypal on their server, steal his login,
and then pass the info along to paypal.
If the sysadmin is supposed to make everything run smoothly, then it follows that the fraction of idle hours (or hours spent playing killbill) per day is a measure of your productivity.
You're clearly producing a smoothly running system environment.
Why can't these computer people stop infringing on our patents?

You must not be familiar with government in the US.
For example, if you have a pothole to fill, it takes at least fie people to fill it in. You have the dispacher, the driver, the supervisor, the safety official. Oh, yeah, I almost forgot the guy with the shovel.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the hole getting filled.
Mind you, five to one is probably conservative when you're talking about adding lawyers to the mix.
But if you take 5:1 to the USPTO, then you're looking at 415 a year.
I was offered a settlement for software bundled with my laptop,
but to claim it I had to give MS a heinous ammount of personal
information, including my social security number and birthdate.
I declined the offer rather than have enough information for
identity theft in the hands of a company I don't choose to
do business with in the first place.
It's bad enough you have to buy Windows even if your going
to use something else.
>The petition to urge them to use a platform-independent format is a good answer.
I am not sure, but the petition appears to encourage you to use a valid email address, but then doesn't send a link as it urges, then replies go to a gmail account.
I wonder if this is just a clever ruse to get email addresses.
The problem is that they count accounts that nobody should count.
When ICQ was new, I jumped in. I lost the account, and the only choice was to get a new number. Yahoo (Kinda) bought Mirabilis, so I got a Yahoo messenger account.
Yahoo messenger started IM spamming me so I uninstalled it.
Through the whole thing I had one AIM account. I finally had to get another because my ISP folded and the new name owner wouldn't give me the time of day let alone the email for the AIM account Sigh.
The Score? 3 unused yahoo accounts, 2 AIM accounts.
I worked support for PPI (a defunct modem company)
One of our rules was that when external modems
didn't work we would make up some garbage about
the hot and neutral legs of the transformer being
sensitive to which way you plug it in, so we would
have them turn the transformer around.
95% of the times they would come back and say
"Yep, that seems to have done it."
That way was way better than the old way
"Did you plug it in, moron?"
This article, published on the Microsoft Newtwork News site, written by some anonmymous writer at Reuters (by the copyright notice,) who is ashamed to put a byline on it.

The whole X-Y co-ordinate system is a compact
method of representing point on a cartesian
plane using decimal digit strings in compact
notation.
If you add to this the html
tag then you end up with a URL encoding
a pair of co-ordinates.
Doesnt this mean prior art?
I looked into the settlement, but it required way too much personal information to get involved.
they wanted my SS#, my Drivers License Nr, and a whole bunch of other stuff.
Seems you would have to just bare your bottom for them for a couple of bucks.
No thanks.
I am hard on stuff. I have had three keyboards
on my laptop thanks to the "Pepsi syndrome"
A book backpack lasts me a year has always been
exceptional as far as I am concerned.
3 years ago I bought a Targus Laptop
Backpack and the darn thing gives every
indication that it is indestructible.
It cost me about $70 shipped when I got it,
but it shows every indication of outliving
my laptop.
Actutally if you do a little looking the company is probably not Canadian.
It appears that they are a Bahamas company:
Leading Edge Marketing Inc.
PO Box CR-56766 Suite #1210
Nassau, New Providence, BS 810-815-1672
Oddly they have this toll free phone number
1-866-383-0893
looking for webmaster/spammers? on this page:
http://www.leadingedgecash.com/
linked from the webmasters button on
http://www.albionmedical.com/
Of course, as always, you should not call and ask
them to drop the charges against this poor guy.
Sorry, it's not a home number, but...
Dave B mentioned the ataconnect.org site, apparently/.'ed, which is registered by Fanger Communications,
in Indiana. (at http://www.fangercom.com/)
Even tho the contact number on their site is 317.636.7635, I would never suggest that you call them and ask them their relationship to ataconnect.org.
Especially don't call if you have a national calling plan on your cell phone.

They NEED bashing.

Think of things that annoy you, like waiting for the water to heat up in the shower,
they have dual plumbing that keeps hot water at the tap now.
They run it behind the mirror on the way so it doesn't steam up the mirror when you
are in the shower.
I have X-10 motion detectors to turn the lights onin my room, but
wish it worked on other lights too.
Why do I need to push a button to open my garage door? Can't my house
recognize my cars wifi ssid and open the garage for me?
Oh, and of course you should have a bat-pole! (Even if you have to
build a second floor just to use it.)

I followed a few of the links listed, and found
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2001/08/03/dell_ends
where a dell marketing sleeze says:
"Our customers did not seem to want it though; the numbers didn't add up,"
If enough people searched for "Linux Desktop" on Dells website
it might make them reconsider.
