I love the idea of "green" backup power via wind and/or solar so that a power outage will no longer mean that I'm without PC/TV/fridge/water/etc. I'd like one of those flash water heaters, too, so that I only heat as much water as I need. And can I have windows that automatically adjust to the outdoor light level, with optional manual override? Oh, and I don't need carpets, so how about one of those cool radiant-heat under the floor systems?
I bailed on the coder's life a few months back for a shorter commute and less job stress. My project load as a coder over the course of 10 years varied from merely stressful to overwhelming. I found a job working as a network admin for a very small company and I can't remember ever being as happy at my job as I am right now. Being the only member of the IT department means no middle-management obstructing my desires for corporate domination!
I left my corporate IT job back in September for a shorter commute and greater autonomy in a small company. When I gave my boss my notice (two weeks), he said "OK" and didn't speak to me again. Since I was responsible for managing the database that handled credit data for all of our customers I was surprised not to be shown the door on the day I gave notice. In fact, a smart company would have locked me out of the system immediately because of the sensitivity of the data I regularly worked with.
Enjoy the downtime, and don't take the lockout personally. Remember that the Senior Talking Heads of any corporation have absolutely no idea what the Geeks are actually capable of, and the lockout is a result of their ignorance and fear. All of those outrageous project requests and timelines came from these folks!
YES. In general, mainframe terminals display in ALL CAPS unless you tell them not to. We're a lazy group, and it doesn't take long to get used to being "yelled at" by your interface.
I live in a community small enough that there are 7 precincts voting in the same building (the local Veterans Memorial Hall), but I was still first.
The poll workers made me watch while they locked the empty ballot box, then asked me to drop my ballot inside. Apparently there has to be a voter-witness to the fact that the ballot box started the day empty. Who knew?
My first WorldCon was San Jose in 2002. I was lucky enough to have a friend there who could show me the ropes - Cheryl Morgan, editor of Emerald City. If you're not familiar with her work, check out www.emcit.com. Her reviews are honest (often brutally so) and entertaining.
Does Eisner know about this...???

Disney Goes Boom!
·
· Score: 2, Interesting
From the article:
The air-launch technology is such a revolutionary step forward that Disney has decided to share it with the pyrotechnics industry as a whole. The Walt Disney Company plans to donate the seven patents produced for the air-launch process to a non-profit group that will license the technology to the rest of the pyrotechnics industry.
Cool article, shocking conclusion. Must now re-evaluate opinion of Disney...

I've had my account for the full seven years. I took a break for a year and half, but kept the account active. And I'm certainly going to buy the Anniversary Edition, if only to get that extra character slot. As with any ongoing game, some folks are going to be unhappy with content, graphics, playstyle, etc. I got sick of getting "ganked" and hung up my bow for a while. When I came back, I found a few like-minded folks to hang out with and now happily participate in a thriving online community.
