it is fairly simple. The only reason why people have come foward to say that they messed up, and that they are stupid, is because the fact that 15-20k of them messed up never changed the outcome of the election before. Right now, those 19k votes would decide who our next president will be.
Correct me if Im wrong, but it seems that he is say that it is not Netscapes fault that it blows now. He thinks that we should take into consideration that they are being forced to release before they are ready, and to put features in that they dont want. Thats a real shame that that is happening, BUT, that doesnt change the fact that it BLOWS.
on the other hand, I do think that peanuts are cute.
Except that in all of your cases the companies are using the licences to maintain control over the user/software, and basicly make it so you can only use it in the orig. way (use a copy machine to copy things that you made, not books) whereas the GPL is there so you CANT stop people from doing what ever that want to do with it once it is release.
They are trying to take away freedom, and we are trying to maintain freedom.
So it doesnt make any sence to yell hypocryte when the goal of each is completely different.

Im going to die pennyless and insane, trying to play a phonograph record with a peanut.
I think that if he did something wrong, cracked into a system or what have you, he should be punished, and the punisment should fit the crime, but.. I have just a few things to point out...
The company offered free or low-cost Internet service to customers around the world through a public access system called "M-Net."
This sentence just seemed to stick out like a sore thumb to me, like "They were giving handouts to blind, disabled, homeless children, and that HACKER (who is presumed innocent until proven guilty, as stated at the end of the articly, yeah, right.) Made it so that we cant do that any more. puh-lease.
On May 31, while Salcedo had access to the M-Net system, the system crashed and did not recover...The M-Net system remained down into July and became available only after M-Net replaced the system's equipment.
So he created a software program that destroyed thier hardware? And it took them 3 months to figure out that it was a hardware problem and that it needed to be replaced?
Now, again, like I said in the beggining, if he did this, he should be punished, BUT, he should have a FAIR trial, and get a JUST punishment. To me, it looks as if this has all be decided.
This is how it all works folks, they make a service, and want you to use thier service with thier client. You can go off and make your own client (that is the risk that they take by giving it all away for free), and they cant complain that you made it, but they can keep changing thier servers so that only thier client can access it.
or, maybe I have no idea what i am say at all, as usual.
It all really depends on yourself. If you have the will and desire to work, organize, learn, and do good on your own, than you might not need college, some people do need this. Others need to act like a child for 4 more years before entering 'real life'. Others still never grow up. I just hope that jobs are still available in the future to talented people regardless of thier education.
Internet: Built by hackers for fun, adopted by the world because of its openness, rejected by business because of its openness.
Internet2: Created to Squash all forms of openness, and make the internet none 'own-able', like companies are trying to do with books, DVDs, and everthing else in the world.
Dont buy into it! We can make this internet better ourselves!
For some reason I get pictures of Intel exec's crying about losing marketshare to thier wives, and thier wives telling them that they should have stopped playing 'mine is bigger than yours' when they were in 2nd grade.
So what have we learned from all of the recent patens and business moves?
Take an idea that is widely used throughout the world, general knowledge if you will, but that is not patented because, well either the person that invented it, did it for the sheer joy of creating, or thought that it was too blatantly obvious, and then take that idea and patent it and call it you own, because hey, you have the patent on it. Now try to force everyone into believing how great you are because you "invented" this great "new" technology.
Im sorry, I know that this has probably been said 50 times by now but....

This is absolutely ludicrous! Companies are becoming obsolete because they are unable to think of new revenue steams in a market when people expect information to be free and sharable, so they try to take away any and all change that we have of owning what we paid for! This makes me terrible upset, I just cant believe that instead of learning changing and adapting to the new way that business is done, they try to do the equivalent of forcing a butterfly back into its cocoon in the hopes that it will go back to being a caterpillar.
