Not quite a scientific study/analysys, but the total transferred amounts say something. Look at the KDE vs. Gnome download totals. Hmmm...........

Holy crap?! You mean companies shouldn't be trying to keep workers productive and happy by listening to their needs? No wonder Google is doomed. On a side note, the grand-parent has already been found to be a troll. Those "Idependent studies" were found to have major MS influence. Posted by an AC too, go figure.

Or my favorite. Run windows and then switch from Intel to Amd or vice versa. Not going to happen. In linux, even if you optimized your kernel for AMD it takes 5 minutes to switch it to intel, or drop it to optimize for i686 and you can swtch seamlesly between them. Once windows gets on one piece of hardware with a certain set it becomes next to impossible to change it without a re-install. Linux goes seamlessly wherever you want it. CPU+Mobo switches are too much for Windows and it has NOTHING to do with their product activation. It just doesnt know how to switch.

rofl....remote exploit in ls? Sure.....cause ls binds to port 1337 on execution...oh ya and I setuid ls. The thing about microsoft products is that because they keep everything so hush hush they COULD have remote exploits in the tiniest of products and programs. You never can be sure of what they're doing, but since Linux allows and encourages a complete understanding of how things work, this scare tactic is just laughable. The BSD and Solairs platform notice just means the hacker couldn't make his code portable ;)

Very informative, thank you. I just hazarded a guess at the "exchange only for software" policy of most companies. However you still haven't explained why some stores won't take a return on opened software and will only exchange it. Its nice to know that some are sensible, but you haven't answered what I still suppose to be the real reason behind "exchange only" policies. Whether people actually do it or not doesn't change the fact that store PHB's will be afraid of it.

    As always, counter-points are welcome.

Just because I can't tell if you're kidding or not...do you know the definition of the word toiletry? It just means something used in the bathroom like a toothbrush or shaving cream. Not omg shaving cream is a toiletry its made from toiletwater. Or omg my toothbrush is a toiletry now that I dropped it in the toilet.

Im sure it means toiletry. Just like there are plenty of idioms in other countrys. Football being soccer in most european countries. And "I ownz joo" meaning im a helpless 12 year old gamer/hacker. I cant think of any right now but im sure there are some English idioms that would seem weird or even gross to others if translated literally. Thats the trick about knowing two languages. Weeding through the idioms, not just looking up words in a dictionary.

I didnt pay for HaloPC either. In the sense that I don't ever want to play it for one reason. Lack of co-op multiplayer . Halo was so good I wanted to shell out 50, nay even 60 if it was that much the very first day. But when my friends downloaded it *hehe* and I saw there was no co-op I couldnt believe it was true. I read reviews and they all said the same thing. No co-op. I know HaloPC lost me and many customers by not including the feature which made the Xbox version what it is today.

...returning a played videogame because it doesn't meet your expectations is just not something that happens very often

You make it sound like you can but don't. I wish you could return videogames that don't meet up with your standards. Like you would return a toaster or a vacuum cleaner that broke the first or second day. Problem is you can copy the game too easily. In a perfect world people would be honest and you could return a bad game, but the fact is the stores aren't afraid of you duplicating their whiz-bang toaster v.2 but its a real fear that you will copy whiz-bang-hyped-game II and return it :(

Somehow I doubt your volume discount store can buy sony products for less than Sony's manufacturing costs(+ a little more for various things shipping, etc), because that is darn close to what the Sony store will be receiving its products for. Maybe your cost is below what they SELL it for to consumers, but not what it costs them to stock the item. They keep the price high for other reasons. Correct me if I somehow misunderstood.

Now i'm not trying to troll, but how hard can it be to create a system that COUNTS? Counting was something I was taught in kindergarten. Granted the voting process can be a little complicated. But you use a simple database. You have an authorization database with the restered voters. You have a couple fields that get filled in when they vote(who they voted for, what time, etc). You dont let them vote twice. That creates an audit trail. THen you also have it increment the database with the canidates. How much harder can it be? The user logs in, pushes the picture/name of the canidate on the touch screen, verify their selection, and their done. If I am missing anything please let me know.
