" Yet, despite that complexity, we need answers to important questions about modern, large-scale software.
What sort of important questions? Well, consider the GNU Compiler Collection. I write articles that benchmark code generation, a task fraught with difficulties due to the myriad options provided by different compilers. For my benchmarks to have any meaning, I need to know which combination of options produces the fastest code for a given application."
I thought we already knew, the answer is "42", of course we would have to build a computer the size of earth to test it...
there will be free(dom) in media(even if I'm the only one using it) because I will produce it, that alone stands against Sicro Moft's declairation that Open Source is dead. Any OTHER OS producer, contributer out there who is willing to say the same for themselves only proves my case further.
I have worked with hundreds if not thousands of Personal Computers 99% of which have had windows installed as the primary [or only] operating system. Altho you ARE correct in that Windows SUPPORTS the multiple desktop, I have YET to see it implemented "out of the box" (ie:Software for multiple desktop and have only ONCE seen Multiple desktops used in ANY case with windows, and that was where a VERY nice graphics card [radeon] shipped the software for such with the drivers.
So, if by "support" you mean "allow", sure It _can_ be done, but if by "support" you mean provide a means by which to do so easially, NO microsoft indeed falls short in this area.
Lets call a spade a window, shall we?
ps. I may also have mispelled some things above, dont be a smart ass. just _try_ to mutter "throu". Thanks... from your local taboo dept.
Its nice to see the Memos will get to see "light of day" in court, or will they?
It will be interesting to see if the Judge decides to take the nature of the CONTENTS of the memos into account when deciding upon this case.
At any rate I look forward to following this case, I just hope it starts getting some national exposure. CNN reported on one aspect of this, however they did NOT mention the implications (or the validity) of the CONTENTS of the memos.
Historically, how far does it go before a collapse occures in a system such as the one it seems we have today? You mentioned Soviet Union, how about others such as the Roman Empire? Is this sort of thing really "new" or is this just a big chapter of history repeating itself?
Just curious what your view on that is, if any. Im also wondering your view on what practical steps can be taken to "save" the USA from going by way of Soviet Union.
Considering the situation with the DMCA, Diebold, Patriot Act, Victory Act, Enron, SCO, Microsoft, RIAA, MPAA, Ashcroft and Generals on a Crusade isn't bad enough? now the Department of Justice gets caught trying to cover some back side.
Now remember, all of these guys are just looking out for the best interests of the "American People." after all they don't want to upset an already BAD situation by adding fuel to the fire, right? That is why it is in the interest of national security.(tell me it aint so)
at risk of being moded redundant I will repeat in my own words what I heard earlier on this subject..."Next time I see a document with black magic marker allover it,go ahead, TRY and convince me it is in the "interest of national security"
Maybe they are right, in thinking if the "American People" knew about HALF of the things that probably go on daily, they would probably revolt, which does, sadly give weight to their arguement.
"In the interest of national security we cannot tell you how corupt the system is because it would be disruptive TO that system (and your security)."
Although I can see practical applications for this in most cases im still sold in the idea of the "open" environment of more traditional wikis such as the developing Owiki (a TWiki clone) for me this is still the best option. Since in TWiki and OWiki every version of a page is saved allong with a version number 1.0 1.1 1.2 etc information is rarely ever lost and peer review and pressure from other contributers is _usually_ all it takes to keep the abuse to a minimum. sure you have your flaimers and trolls here and there... but then again, dont we all?
Instead of using pirated windows, these people will now use free GNU software. Net change to microsoft = nothing.
actually, considering the fact that Microsofts #1 competition [linux] will gain a larger user base, thus a larger contributer base, In the long term the Net change to microsoft = loss (this being due to linux becoming better able to compete for desktops)
You forgot about the US ARMY and that new high tech force they are developing with linux "because of stability reasons". I remember seeing that story on/. yesterday.
I dont really think it is a joke. more a reference to a well known analogy (possibly a classic analogy which represents hypocracy) perhaps the "old joke" here is the act of trying to discredit someons insightfull comment by manipulating the analogy to fit your own agenda.
because proverbs are old, doesn't [always] make them any less true, infact on the contrary it makes the message more universally understood indeed BECAUSE of the fact the "joke" is so "tired"
but go ahead, change the subject, poke fun at the comment. but what ever you do dont address the ACTUAL issue at hand, out of fear we might actually accomplish something PRODUCTIVE. or you could always just go to yahoo.com and post your cynical attitude there. and dont bother pointing out any faults in my arguement, because honestly, It doesn't matter to me so much at this point what you think anyway. so long as you get my message.
With continued research in such areas as creating biological weapons. Considering the eventualities of such efforts, What are the odds that something like this could escape the control of the lab environment and upset the ecosystem by destroying any arbitrary link in the food chain on a regional if not GLOBAL scale?
while I feel biological research is very important for curing disease and STOPING biological warfare. I think ANY efforts on the part of ANY governing body, to attempt to CREATE such threats should be (if it is not already) considered illegal. What does the international Community think about this?
Infact I have been "betting on IBM" since I chose to go with "IBM compatable" computers back when the Apple IIe (tm) was the king of the hill.
As far as Im concerned IBM _should_ by duty stand against SCO, if for no other reason than to justify my (and probably your) support of them all of these years.
Said like a true Scientist. I agree Solar technology is important, and should not be overlooked as a viable source for the energy needed to drive these cars via whatever "carrier" that is found at the time, be it hydrogen or whatever means found best at the time.
I think the theory is power plants are controled and regulated, thus minimizing waiste.
As apposed to cars burning gas that would be far wider spread and overall, just plain "worse".
Consider Artificial Intelligence might never happen because if this kind of thing, bots could be unable to "clone themselves" due to End User License Agreement.

You just described my "office" all the way down to the pizza.
They call me Taboo for a reason...
You have a good point, but consider it is entirly possible congressmen read slashdot.
Just a thought.
'I stand here before you as representing the MPAA, one of the leading advocates of First Amendment rights...
With Advocates like you, who needs adversaries?
we are going to have allot of felons.

But that is just my warped view of things.
IBM, give em hell! (don't let us down now)
If we could only talk M$ into converting over....
on my last post I meant to ask "Is that what you are saying?"
Consider when an AI writes/developes code in his OWN name and attempts to copyright it. What then would copyright protection apply?
Is that what you are

NOTE: Im NOT saying I agree with this Theory.
Using Nuclear Power they could steam cook chickens and produce electricity at the same time. "Welcome to nuK-FC can I take your order?"

I have mozilla, and you are right, it needs more innovation. :)
