  1. I'm glad to see that update.... on Lindows Agreeing to Change Name · · Score: 1

I'm glad to see the update. At first I thought Lindows had to change their name period.

What next? Will Bill Gates sue every home owner who uses the word window instead of "Magic Porthal of Light"? Or did they copyright that name too?

The teaching of upper level math and science has nothing to do with the teachers. If were up to math and science teachers like myself, we'd teach AP Physics and Calculus all day. In our high school of 700 students, the enrollment in the calculus class is so small the teacher was forced to take the 7 kids who signed up into other classes or cut calculus all together. There just isn't enough money in school budgets for a teacher to have a class of 7, when there are consumer math classes (read this as: remedial math) of 32 kids.

These kids refuse to think, and their parents want to blame anyone and everyone else.

Personally, I'm beating it into my kids heads right now that they ARE going to take all uppper level classes weather they want to think or now. I'm also teaching my 8 year old daughter web design too ;)

"American school system not being up to snuff. In a report by the AeA, they contend that American schools don't teach enough math and science anymore.
I'm an American math and science teacher. I have found that the basic American student is trying to avoid thinking less and less. I've seen many students drop out of Algebra II and Pre-Calculus and take consumer math because "it's too hard". American parents are too busy making too many excuses for their children also. Students don't want to take a structured programming class because it would require them to find and correct their own mistakes and think too much. I have a hell of a time getting them to do that in my HTML class.

I know there's all kinds of self taught programmers out there (myself included) because your school didn't have a staff member knowledgeable enough. I know there's a lot of schools out there that are way behind the technology.

With that said, the US is going to do nothing but fall behind unless more students find the desire to think.

I recently visited a commune way out in BFE. The largest town within decent distance (30 min drive) is around 4k. It's more of an ecological friendly expirentmental village than a commune. Everyone who lives there year round has some sort of job that can be done from a distance like web design, travel agent. Check them out at http://www.dancingrabbit.org. Pretty nice group.

I've been working with my best friend on starting an ISP. We've been friends for nearly 30 years now, since we were were both in grade school. The biggest plus with us is that we can be totally honest with each other, without hurting each other's feelings. I also think there is an emotional component behind my motivation to help his business succeed. With that said, an APPLE consulting business? I've had apple computers shoved in my face for so many years, I become violently ill when faced with them. According to most Mac freaks,Myth #1 Apples don't break, so how are you going to get any return there? Myth #2: Macs are eaiser to use, once you set them up, so what are they going to need you for after the initial sale? Are your customers such complete morons that they'll need constant assistance? Myth #3: Microsoft is evil. If you think M$'s practices are so bad, how are they compared to the propritary nature of Apple products? Ever try to replace a fried network card in an iMac? (HINT: you must replace the entire motherboard at a certified Apple service center) Ever try to replace a battery on an iPod? I don't mean this as a flame directed at you. I'll probably get flamed myself. But if you were forced to use an operating system that had NO options and treated you like you weren't smart enough to do more than word process or surf, you'd be bitter too.

I've not seen the video yet (it's suffering the slashdot effect), but unless he was truly harrassed, he was in the wrong.
