    My wife manages a teen drop-in center. Oh, the crap I hear about... Anyway, their relationships average about a week, and their definition of "trust" is "stay away from the opposite sex or I will go publicly and aggressively crazy." This illustrates a need for classes about how to avoid codependency and what abuse and manipulation in a relationship looks like. But all the middle and high schools are almost solely focused on studying their students up for the standardized tests, so once again, thank Bush for fucking up society.

    They'd pass a law that said that since the government imposed those restrictions, they need to pay for them. Win-win on the side of them and the government (since they're getting "campaign contributions" through passing the bill), big lose on the side of the taxpayer.

    You say you have no vacation time, I say you have unlimited vacation time. Normal companies will bitch out employees for not hitting milestones as well; the difference is that in yours, that's all they care about.

    The normal curve I've seen, in multiple places, is that cognitive function takes a sudden nosedive at about age 13, and typically recovers in the mid 20s. I wouldn't call that "cognitive decline" however, perhaps "puberty-induced temporary brain damage" would be more to the point.

    My wife, who manages a teen afterschool drop-in center, could probably write an entire book on this phenomenon.

    What you're talking about is completely, 100% reasonable (assuming that the problems are both small and non-useful, i.e. that you're not using the candidate for free work).

    This article is talking about brain teasers like, "How would you move Mount Fuji?" Those, of course, are dumb (and Google recognized that a long time ago and stopped using them).

    php: pros: easy, straightforward, multiplatform cons: practically web-only

    I'm obviously a bit biased as a (primarily) PHP developer, but I should point out that PHP isn't completely web-only or dependent on a web server. It's not the best shell scripting language, but it has its uses there too.
