    You forgot their other duty. Their job is to establish partnerships with other technology companies, mandate the use of those company's products internally, regardless of need or suitability, and then grant themselves large bonuses for achieving 'synergies'

    What's with the preoccupation with updating the OS. Why would that be your most significant purchase criterion? Do you use the same criterion when purchasing a television, stereo system, or any other device with an embedded OS ?

    She was a two-bit actress, not Elizabeth Taylor, or Mae West. She was barely known within England, within the minuscule circle of people who watched Dr. Who, she certainly wasn't known in the larger world.

    ...that NASCAR will be the first auto-race to be fully computerized, and maybe then my dream will be answered. Once computers completely control NASCAR, Billy Nochin and his spawn will completely lose interest (one would suppose), and maybe it will just disappear. One can hope.

    The simple fact is that it makes no difference how fast or slow trading occurs, each trade (or order) is the result of someone thinking they can predict the future price. Whether they think that from insider information, careful review of the companies products/balance-sheet/ management/patents/whatever, or some stupid algorithm trying to outperform someone elses stupid algorithm is immaterial. 'Better' information is everything. To some people the better part simply means they can make a decision quicker than someone else.

    The problems you speak of don't have silver-bullet cures - you have to work on them for generations.
    Of course there's no silver bullet, but the point is, there are huge problems in India and spending money to build the 6th of these things seems stupid.

    Suspend all research spending?
    Not ALL research spending, but how about research spending on project directly related to solving these issue first?

    I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion. Actually I don't care at all about what the Indian government decides to waste its money on. I am simply amazed that they would prefer to spend their money being number 6, than cleaning up their house.

    I do not see how this type of project is sanctioned by the Indian government.

    Half the population is living in slums
    Most parts of the country have only intermittant electricty
    There is almost no safe water (by Western European standards)
    The majority of the population is functionally illiterate.
    The roads are amongst the most dangerous in the world
    Pollution (air, water, and waste) is a HUGE problem


    I suggest that this money could be better spent addressing those problems

    I am from the US, and I learned the same thing at about the same age.

    As poor as the US school system in general has become in the ensuing years, there are, I am quite sure, a large number of US 12 year olds learning this as I write.

    I thought SMS was sent on essentially out of band data (or perhaps the control channel). This implies that there is some data channel already in place with a MUCH higher bandwidth. Why would anyone use SMS in this case ?
