I justified the extra cost with the fact that I can back up all my source code, bring pictures with me to people's houses, carry around a few seasons of the simpsons, and listen to music.

I couldn't agree more... in fact I'm encoding the rest of my CD's to OGG and MP3(VBR) as we speak because my IHP-140 is supposed to arrive on Monday.

The other nice thing about the iRiver's is they come with some of the basic equipment, carrying case, microphone and such.

I read something incredibly interesting just last night that made me wonder about iPOD's, is it true that they only support CBR MP3's and AAC's?

I will agree with you (and the original poster), it's a little niave to pretend Oil was the only reason though, Mr Bush et al. (don't forget the et al, they're probably more to blame than the president), in reality the reasons are even less comprehensible to a rational mind.

This explains why I'm turned off to concepts like iTunes. Sure I'll download the occasional one hit wonder or latest greatest radio song. But given the fact that the price scale per song is break even with a CD, I don't get it... I'll purchase and encode myself. Can I tell the difference between my MP3's and CD's? Sometimes, not often to be honest. But someday in the future I figure there's a reasonable chance that I'll have a system where I can.

iTunes, Napster, etc... you're selling us less, charge us less!

Personally, I'll start paying for downloads when the price point is 1/3-1/4 that of a purchased CD, or when I have the option to download a lossless version. I'd prefer the later.

but yes! It's not the quality of US Schools, it's the cost of US schools. I wouldn't say it's necessarily a point of college, but it's certainlly one of the problems with going to college. Let's be more modest and assume 60 grand for 4 years of school (tuition plus rent and food).

That comes out to -60-20-20-20-20=140,000 less dollars in my pocket than if I'd taken a 20,000 a year job right out of school. Even if I make twice what I would've made with no college education, it will take me 6 years to break even (more like 9 with interest payments).

Financially speaking, college is nearing a breakeven point, someone needs to figure this out.

Though this does raise the question of bias doesn't it, these calculators aren't cheap, and some students only are able to use them if their school provides them, which is clearly much different than having one at home to practice with/put notes into/etc.

I dunno, I'm seriously considering one of the hard disk players... the 20 gig iRiver is my current front-runner, though alot of these are looking pretty amazing.

Also, I've heard very mixed reviews about Archos items, is there anything from them that compares?

Two big sticking points for me...
    • Can the "built in batteries" on these units be swapped with some technical know how.
    • Three years from now, if I'm happy with the performance, can I plug in a bigger harddrive (I remember seeing some Archos mods which did this)

Dictatorships are actually quite good at keeping terrorism down. I haven't seen any specific evidence of pre-Bush Iraq supporting terrorism. And as to paying money to the families of suicide bombers... that's one of the most often context-free arguments I hear. Money was sent to families who had their homes destroyed by the IDF. Obviouslly, this often coincided with the families of suicide bombers, but the policy was not to support the bombers, rather to support the families who were being illegaly (by international law) punished.
