"Please tell me where the cost justification is in letting the iPod play other formats that just don't sell nearly as well as the DRM used at the iTMS."
One of the reasons that Apple charges more for some of their products is R&D and design (lord knows MS doesn't do any of that lifting--unless it's to find out how to squeeze more money out of cr*ppy code).
I would guess another reason they haven't lowered their prices would be that they don't have to. I don't blame apple for charging what they charge. They're going to need all the money they can get to fight off MS once they find a way to use the Window's monopoly.
my ipod is filled with them. tons of them. but if i want to buy music online instead of from converted cds, i need to pick a format since the record industry hasn't created their own form of DRM
"I think apple will again lose out because it is being a damn fool trying to lock everyone into its file type and hardware."
well, maybe i don't want to be locked into Microsoft's format either.
"And slowly I can see them losing out as more people want to save that 50 dollars when there are no quality differences."
Take a walk around nyc or any city for that matter. you can't throw a stick without hitting an ipod owner. i don't think it's a style-statement either, people are just sick of dealing with buggy virus-laden software and bad design. it doesn't help that MS are everything bad about big business in this country as well.
"apple is the real innovator, but you know what, I don't care when they try and charge me out the ass. I buy the cheapest product that does the job, and so do a lot of people."
and this is the attitude that is creating a third-world economy in the US and shaping much of our foreign policy; "I don't care if something is made well, i just want it cheap and in bulk so i can stuff more crap into my life."
Jeez. I'm real sorry i don't live in a state that voted in the same candidate that has given the U.S. the highest national debt ever.
Please don't complain about economic problems and the underpaid U.S. workers -- you got what was important to you --your moral high-ground. Instead of trying to stop guys from kissing each other next election, you might want to consider the economy for a few seconds.
"...how often does one do a blind search of the whole system anyway?"
well, you've got to realize that this will be the big topic for the next boring couple of years. even google, not to mention apple, MS and every 'nix flavor are working on solutions. managing your information.
i have to admit that i have crapola all over my harddrive that i will never go back to -- the files just keep getting buried and copied over to my newest computer. even if spotlight is kinda flawed, engineers have to start looking for better ways to manage information.
and besides, it gives MS something to do besides f-ing up browser standards;)
wouldn't they have already brought this up by marketing the hell out of it? even if it's only to take some of the wind out of apple's tiger before it starts getting promoted heavily.
I hate to admit it, but from what i've read, i'm not going to have to fiddle with spotlight a whole lot. it's just going to work well, like most of apple's stuff.
you can sing me that same song about "family" and more values when my wife and i have to f*cking live in a shelter (if we're lucky) because we can't pay rent!
I'll tell my wife it's ok that she's dying of pnumonia, cause the president gay peeps to go away and that's more important than the mind-boggling debt he has acrued.
"The author is saying that it's bad news that Microsoft got a favorable verdict. Your response seems to show you think the opposite."
That's shortsighted reasoning thinking of this as a 'win' for microsh*t. Our we all naive enough to think that MS can't buy themselves out of most situations that affect them in a negative fashion?
This is a win for web developers and other browser makers.
Because IE would be the first to get hit. It's not a feature of only IE, almost all Web browsers use this feature. Because developers would have to waste a lot of theirs and their clients time and money. Dumb*ss.
"My logs show that 75% of the traffic to my website are from IE 5. The remaining 25% are IE 6.0 and Mozilla Gecko based browsers."
that was who i was aiming at, not the people that posted useful info afterwards:)
Wow. That is interesting. You must remember to waste more of my life with your unsubstantiated, and somewhat useless "facts." Quite interesting indeed.
My "website" logs show 72% MM 2.3 and 28% Web-n-Viewer 1.2
the older macs (g4s) aren't very fast...you might want to wait a week or so for new macs to come out, and then buy a first gen g5
are you seriously buying a computer for its color?:)

the above was my reply to this comment:
"Hey Rocket Scientist....ever hear of mp3. Get the cluestick!"
yeah, captain obvious.

Insightful?

virtually nothing! its run on lab rat and monkey feces which is converted to fuel to power generators. ah, the circle of life.

well, now that dreamworks is selling shrek tampons® , they gotta keep up ;)
I'm guessing ebert & roeper's kids must have really bad ADD, or you work for dreamworks.
my nephews loved it.
as far as Cars goes, lets hope it takes a long time to release. preferably with another Incredibles/Nemo sandwiched in-between ;)
yeah, they based the success of the entire movie on some slapstick. you are a special person indeed.
"cause the president gay peeps to go away"
should be:
because the president wants gay peeps to go away
you can sing me that same song about "family" and more values when my wife and i have to f*cking live in a shelter (if we're lucky) because we can't pay rent!

i wish i were dumb so i could fit in better at your family events

Why Jack*ss? Why did you feel you needed to waste fugging bandwidth with that stupid reply. And, you wasted my time in making me post this.
This overturned patent is a good thing for ALL developers.
Because IE would be the first to get hit. It's not a feature of only IE, almost all Web browsers use this feature. Because developers would have to waste a lot of theirs and their clients time and money. Dumb*ss.
I use Safari (La-dee-da) btw
for all intents and purposes HP and Dell run the same OS

I want my time back
Firefox is nice...i still use Safari, but i might start tinkering with the aforementioned.
