at least they kid won't have legal charges against him. let's just hope the teacher is punished. i think since the kid went and told the teacher he did it, if you just tell him not to do it again he won't.
windows computers don't come with quicken, or the office packages either you know. unless they are oem installed, which could be done easily with linux also.
its a silly article. the 'average user' doesn't need an html editer or ftp either. but the 'average linux user' might. zdnet hasn't done trade studies, so they don't know what people want or need. and how many average users are going to be doing the ftp install? approximately none. i had some help and installed red hat via ftp in about two hours (install to completely setup). i am not a power user, and the help i had came from somebody with a little bit of linux experience but no expert. it didn't support my soundcard though, which is why i don't use it today (aureal vortex).
i agree though that the best thing about windows is everything works in it (what he calls plug in play, although its not that easy). however this is the thing that lots of linux people are trying to fix, and rightly so. i would assume developers ignore this sort of article, because it really didn't say anything useful.
bah why waste such a good troll if you're not going to log in. of course its only an operating system. if you don't like it, don't use it. if i don't like windows, i won't use it. of course the fact that i have to pay for windows makes the comparison unbalanced. why shouldn't you want a free operating system that does everything windows does?
look at the treatment the west nile virus has received, compared to something like asthma. huge amounts of money were spent to eradicate any possible west nile contamination, because some 'rich' person could be infected. all the while 'poor' asthma sufferers (urban dwellers, where cockroaches cause asthma more) are ignored. this is because poor people are worth less than rich people, so your comment does not take that into account when talking about failing beds (rich people can afford higher quality beds, but use cell phones).
the click through rate is low because annoying flashing animated pop up windows cause a reaction of 'must close window' immediately. a few discretely placed links at the middle or end of an article would be much more effective. web marketers don't understand that people hate commercials that jump up the volume real loud or flash fast enough to cause seizures. could you imagine if an ad changed the channel on your tv? how about the ads with bugs that had people breaking their tvs?
your assumption will be that other sights will say hmm we're too ad intensive, lets cut back. my guess is that the reverse will happen, low ad sights will see all the hits and say, now we have all these visiters, each addition ad will makes us however many million extra.
actually they like to get their hands into as much as possible, basically slowly growing their power. its sort of a good bet that they would support decss, because it just shows how far they can extend their power...ie against such powerful entities as mpaa
you're saying we should protect people who just go around randomly telling them their novel new ideas? patents don't protect you from that, would they?
no, his website says all patents. and i for one agree. if small inventor dude comes up with an idea, he should either have to get investment capital himself to develop the idea, or sell it to a larger company. they can't steal it if he doesn't tell them what it is. if a company just says no, we'll just research it for a year and develop it on our own, i bet that companies competitors would be interested in buying the idea. besides how often is it the small inventor coming up with something like that situation anyway. usually its somebody who already has a job, and gives the idea to the company for a $3000-$5000 bonus of some sort. is that all these ideas are worth? you don't need patents to guarantee people this kind of chump change. sure one or two (naive)people might get screwed, but the overall economy will experience greater efficiency, all that money that supports the patent office will be put into a tax cut (spurring growth), and you won't have shit like one click shopping patents.
all you dorks saying what users want is pretty annoying. i am a user, i write no applications that i use. i don't give a fuck about windows shit, i would be perfectly happy running solaris (so i can use my tools at work) and maybe a windows application so i can read other peoples excel files, etc. if everybody at my company used suns suite, i wouldn't need windows. so who are you to say what users want, considering you are completely wrong!
this is bs. at my companies, its the management that gets fired when a project fails, if they could have saved it. the engineers are never blamed for programs failing, unless did things like lie, or acted unethically, or did a crappy job (which does happen).

how do you know the vocal minority isn't against this patent? i love google, but i am against their patent. i'm against all patents. i'm a libertarian.
at least some 'classic' software goes through a fairly rigorous test period. why doesn't web software ever do that, it's always about having lame moving gifs and shit.
i heard that about northernlights, too...about 5 years ago. nobody is objective enough nowadays that you can believe anything anybody says. everybody is going to own stock in a search engine , even if indirectly.

i've never had to recompile anything for my linux partition to work properly.

how many you can feed doesn't matter. how many could you teach to fish?
umm maybe we should be spending time whatever interests us the most. not really a difficult concept, even for seaquest fans

which is what they do with trademarks, and people complain about cease and desist letters.
the moral of this example is that patents really DON'T protect the 'small inventor' kind of arguing against what you claimed. pretty funny really

i haven't finished reading it yet
this is why you a)have legally bonding nondisclosure agreements b)don't trust large companies until you have signed contracts

katz is smart? maybe in the way ellsworth toohey is smart. maybe not even that though.

i don't think its valid to not cheat if not doing so ruins the gaming experience. regardless of the effect on someone else.
cheating is bad. maybe we should just filter out the word cheat from everything, so nobody will know about it.
