  1. Yes, they have been measuring unemployment in a very dishonest way for a very long time. For example, do they routinely report on the quality of the jobs that people are employed in, or how many people need to work 2 or 3 jobs to barely pay their bills? Do the numbers include the disparity in compensation for workers vs. management or how much wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few?

Predatory capitalism is struggling to keep everyone under control and prevent the move toward socialism. Someday the US will honor the part of the preamble to the Constitution that says the government is charged with promoting the general welfare of the population. Right now, the government is in bed with giant, too big to fail corporations, and they need to maintain their fictions about how well the economy is doing. I am sure the economy is doing very well for the very well to do. Not so much for everyone else.

  2. Well, I and a number of people I know are in and have been in that group over the last 8 years, when that had never happened to us before. The economy is doing very well for some, and extremely poorly for others. I am in scientific research, and money is very hard to come by now unless you are working for a very large lab. The idea that all those people are just stay at home moms and kids and grandmas is just pure fantasy doled out by the corporate media. If the "unemployment rate", which is a poor measure because lots of people are on it till it runs out and they are still unemployed, has any meaning whatsoever, then so does the number of people not in the workforce at all. Just be honest.

  3. Somehow, reaching an all time high for people not working says more than you suggest, when so many families have more than one person working to try and pay the bills. I think the unemployment number is truly bogus, because many people can't find a decent job in the 6 months they get on unemployment.

  4. Isn't the number of people who are not working a more important number? Last I looked that number was up to 95 million people.

The unemployment rate is just a distraction.

One of the unfortunate consequences of having made pot illegal and arresting so many people for it is that it became a gigantic industry; police, private prisons, "rehabilitation" programs, parole boards, civil forfeiture. The government created a massive money making machine, and a huge number of non-productive (indeed destructive) jobs were and still are associated with it. They people involved don't want to let that go, so prisons and police are lobbying against legalization. Thankfully, now that states have found they can make more money by legalizing and taxing pot, they are shifting in that direction one by one. So after ruining so many lives, the whole massive money machine is slowly being whittled away. Good f'ing riddance.

By the way, if your pain has an inflammation component, you should try fish oil if you don't already take it. Get a good quality one that has had the mercury and PCBs removed (it should say something on the label about it). The omega-3 fatty acids help keep inflammation under control. It is not a pain relief, but it does limit inflammation and that can help, It helps with my joint pain quite a bit.

I hate opioids too. Only take them when I really, really need to. The dangers of pot are extremely minimal compared with tobacco, alcohol and opioids. On top of being addictive, opioids make the pain worse once they wear off, making people go back for more to reduce the now increased pain. Pot does not do that.

    http://www.sciencemag.org/news...

I expect the attacks on pot to really intensify now that CA has legalized it. The companies that deal deadly drugs can see the trend, and it is terrifying them.

Pot was never made illegal because of safety concerns. Take a look at Nixon's huge report on pot from the 1970s. They knew it was much less dangerous than alcohol a long time ago.

Agreed, and I expect that as more states legalize pot the more the opioid and alcohol industries will fund "studies" to show the horrible dangers of THC. Forget about the facts that alcohol and opioids kill tens of thousands of people each year in the US. Forget about all the traffic accidents and domestic violence tied to alcohol abuse. Everyone knows pot is safer than alcohol, opioids and tobacco. But that won't stop the research into the "dangers" of pot.

This is cool, but not color electron microscopy. It is pseudocolor at best based on what things in a cell that the lanthanides bind to. A real color electron microscope would somehow use electrons at different energies to try and figure out the chemical makeup of subcellular structures. Or maybe vaporize the sample line by line by scanning with the electron beam on high after taking the image with lower energy electrons, and then analyze the ions produced. But this is still pretty cool.

You obviously are not a scientist working within the system. The funding situation in science within the US now is almost the worst I have seen in the last 30 years. It is not only very difficult to get any kind of funding, but in many cases you also have to have already shown that something conclusively occurs to get funding to study if it occurs. This dramatically limits funding for many cutting edge projects.

We joke around here about how they are grooming Jenna Bush and Chelsea Clinton for the next round of elections. We assumed before, and know now after the DNC hacks, that the media work with the DNC to promote candidates. We know that the DNC was working with the Clinton campaign and the media to attack Bernie Sanders. Now the same political/media machine is going after Trump. I just don't see how any Democrats would want to support that corrupt system. It's like thinking you'll stop crime in the city by voting for the Mafia.

Rewarding very, very bad behavior only begs for more of it. Voting for Clinton is telling the media, and the DNC and the Clintons that what they have been doing is just fine with the voters.

Voting Green will help the Green party get federal matching funds. Considering the two main party candidates this time, I can't think of a better time to help the Greens. I get nothing if I vote for Clinton, other than to tell the Democrats they can do anything they want and still get my vote. Clinton admitted in excerpts from leaked Podesta emails that she had two positions on everything, one for public consumption, and one for corporations. So what if her public stance on the TPP, TISA, and others is that she is now against them? We know what her corporate position is on them.

I am wholeheartedly voting Green this time around, and I hope lots of other Democrats do too. That is how to change the Democratic party. Starve it of votes as long as they act like criminals and corporate tools.

I supported Bernie Sanders, and the DNC used every cheating dirty trick in the book to make sure he failed. If Independents had been allowed to vote in all the primaries, he would have won. Jill Stein is the only other candidate that is talking about the same issues. Clinton is talking about no fly zones over Syria. You also know she will push through any trade deals that Obama fails to get passed. I voted for the Democrats most of my life (my first presidential vote was for Carter). But that is over. Now that they are the other corporate controlled party, I will be sticking with the Greens until the DNC gets taken back from the billionaires.

Plus, when Clinton starts war with Russia over Syria, my conscience will be clear. I am never voting for the DNC again until they stop pushing Wall Street owned corporate lackey candidates, while smashing down populists like Bernie Sanders.
