VMware is not at all late to the game - they have been doing x86 virtualization really well for almost 10 years.

To create a VMware image from a real Windows box, use the VMware Converter (a free download).

There is also a free importer that converts images from other formats (not sure if it supports parallels).

You really don't *want* a senior position. Even if you can negotiate the higher salary, make sure you get a job title without "Senior" in it. That way, if you're any good at your job, you can get an easy promotion and raise soon after you join.

Also, you need to work a permanent job for a couple of years before you've got enough experience to do contracting.

If your goal is to do contract work, the ideal job might be with a services company that takes you on as a permanent member of staff, and then contracts you out to their clients.

    Nonsense.

The early browsers let you choose your preferred colours and fonts. The person writing the html wasn't supposed to (and didn't) worry about exactly how it would look.

And we've always been able to turn on or off the images. That's pretty fundamental.

There are many ways in which the client has always had ultimate control. And that's as it should be.

I haven't tried greasemonkey yet but it sounds like a great tool.

  16. 1966 to 1975 is *not* Generation X on Generation Wrecked · · Score: 1

    > born in 1967 (making me a Gen X'er, to my honest surprise)

Your instincts are right - generation X are the people about 4-5 years older than you.

The Fortune article has some good insights is fundamentally incorrect. I really recommend the book _Boom, Bust & Echo_ by D. Foot for an explanation of the baby boom and its repercussions.

Generation X, by the way is the height of the baby boom - those born around 1961-1962. Yes, the baby boom started after World War II, but it reached its *peak* in 1961, and those poor bastards are Generation X. There are so very many of them that there aren't really enough resources (jobs, houses) for all of them. And all the good positions were snapped up by the people around 5-15 years older - the lucky members of the baby bust. If you're part of a baby bust, you're in a very sweet position because the world is essentially there for the taking, and you don't have many peers to compete with.

It's all supply and demand, and the supply of people in Generation X is very high.

1966-75 is actually an echo of the baby bust, of course not nearly as pronounced, so we (I'm around your age) are part of the lucky generation. However, the sheer size of Gen X that came before us means that we still feel the effects of it.

Anyway now I feel like I should do a slashdot review of this incredible book.

The CIBA extended-wear lenses are excellent.

I have been using them for four years now and I was part of the inital study before they were approved in Canada.

In dry, dusty areas I find them a bit uncomfortable, but normally I never think about them. Once a month I take them out in the evening and put in a new set the next morning. There's no need for any solutions.

The lenses allow oxygen to pass through to the eye, so you really can just leave them in for a month.
