I dont say that the mind can not be explained with a computational model. What I think is that current models are not powerful enough or correct enough to explain the mind
I think we are in an impasse similar to when the newtonian physics failed to explain physcal phenomena that could only be explained after the copernical breakthrough brought by the theory of relativity.
There is something that we are missing, like the iteration of time, space and energy in Einstein's theories. That was quite a sock for the newtonian mindset where time and space are frozen and not interdependent
I know I am in slippery terrain and could be understood as promoting some kind of spiritual/religious thing. That is not what I am proposing. What I am trying to say is that we are missing some kind of phenomena or dynamics in the real world that could finally explain what is really going on in the mid.
What can it be, I have no idea. I just have this kind of gut feeling that the world seems to be flat, when it is actually round but nobody can see it yet.
I am pretty much sure that the current computational models. I.e. Turing Machine are not enough to explain the human mind.
All computing systems todays are Turing Machines. Even neural networks. (actually less than Turing Machines, because Turing Machines have infinite memory)
Maybe quantum computers could open the way. Maybe not.
I think that a future computing theory that could explain the mind would be as different and Newtonian physics from Einstein's Relativity.
If Constellation was going to be dropped eventually, why pour some much money into it?
Wouldn't it be better to reuse already available technology? And if NASA does not have the budget to to it then transfer the technology to other companies.
The Russians has been using their human launch capabilities for decades without having to go through different launch technologies. They have being using the same rocket family and space ship without pouring money on dead alleys of chopped off projects. How much money has used Russian to put, and keep putting men in space and how much money has use the US to put no man in space in the end?
Why not reuse what is already in place, use the DIRECT Shuttle derivative? Transfer the technology to private firms, and set up goals to be back to space in shorter time and with lower budgets.
It is crazy to keep burning the wheels to reinvent it again.
Even NASA could use such developed system.
The Ipad, and other Apple devices, maybe closed, DRMized and can download software only from Applestore. But as long as the device and its ecosystem is convenient and provides a good experience, most people wont care about its limitation.
And that is what Apple is good for. Provide a fuzzy warm feeling when you use their products.
Same problem with Iphone. Oh it does not have Trillion pixel camera, super processor, FM Radio, whatever?
Besides the user interface It is the integration of hardware+software that apple can achieve. It flight around other hardware with more bells and whistles but poorly integrated and with poor UI.
There is a market for a paper free newspaper (oh the irony).
With the advent of e-readers, net books and smartphones there is a significant market for a new kind of newspaper.
Are you good journalist, book authors or columnist? Why work then for a traditional paper news media?
Create your own online news system, a blog may even suffice. You will be in total control or your own news. Get rid of all the overheard of a brick and mortar newspaper.
If the content is good, ad revenues will flood in. No need to compromise your ethics because you will control which advertisement gets in, and also a leaner cost structure make easier to reject crap and bad influences
.
Need a printed edition? Just make your article frees to any paper-newspaper (local, national or international) who want to print them. Just request them to provide the reference to you.
This is the real danger for classic newspaper, and their outmoded business model and cost structure. Let them die a slow death.

You have nice pecks baby.
What we really need is a liquid, at normal temperatures and maybe hydrocarbon based, able to absorb and transport hydrogen to fee later feed to a fuel cell.
I doubt that batteries and ultracapacitors can reach the energy density of a tank of gasoline/diesel, and the greater efficiency of electric engine will not close the gap.
If we could develop a such a liquid, without incurring in too much energy losses and emssions in producing and using it, it may be the solution for fuel cells.
After two or three problems with DRM a legar buyer would say. What the heck!. I get the stuff from a torrent!
How to stop piracy? Put a right price, forget DRM. If the price is right, if the usage is right, most will no bother to go through the hassle to get pirated copies.
Ah! But the prices had to go down, and the complete business model would have to be rebuild. That's the real problem. Too many greedy companies trying to keep working an obsolete, overpriced sytem..
Federal Criminal Authority is not the Secrect Service, and I doubt very much they would ever have done anything similar to what happened inside german govt. computers.
Now, if you were speaking about the BND.. and even then I very much doubt they would have used such spy methods. Too blatant.
Answer to your thought experiment.
We dont have yet neuron replacements.....

Maybe what we are missing is the Oracle....

What people forget is the appeal of convenience.

Ease of use, ease of use and ease of use.

Just check Nokia.
Constellation .... cancellation. Maybe that was the problem. Too similar words!
Incredible what children can be used for!
;-)
Maybe children should be forbidden for the sake of a free society
Someone trying to say that someone is trying to discredit China?

Very flat!
I wonder how the pizza would look like after delivery.
If I have pay for it I own it.
If I dont own it, I wont pay for it!

Damned is global warming, damned is global cooling!
If POP/IMAP was enabled and local copy stored in user computer, give it as present to the mafia the moment the account is blocked.
DRM actually promotes piracy.

A local pointed head boss (PHB) took the wrong decission.
He is surely being spanked right now by MS central office.
At the same time, without much of a hush hush, put back the original photo or change it for one completely (and all white?) different.
Then don't fix it!
Get Android with Google docs!!! ;-)
