You don't have to pay for Bonds' liver. He will pay for it with his health insurance. Unless of course socialized medicine advocates get their way. Then you will pay for athlete's liver problems and my vegan neighbor will pay for Micheal Moore's heart problems. That's fair, right?
Except, of course, that the health insurance company gets the money to pay for treating Bonds' liver and Moore's heart problems from the money everyone who has health insurance pays them. The only differences between that and socialized medicine is that with the current system, you pay more, because the shareholders must also be paid, and the insurance company has a profit motive to try to weasel out of its duties if you actually do get health problems.
Both health insurance and socialized medicare are based on collectively paying the cost of treating the unlucky few who get ill or injured, but the socialized system does this far more efficiently, and is far less likely to let its participants down when they most need it.
Because, as someone else noted earlier in the discussion, performance-enhancing drugs and technologies aren't 100% conducive to the athlete's continued health.
Sitting for 8 hours a day isn't conductive to continued health either, but I don't see anyone trying to make office work illegal.
Man, when are those stupid Scientists going to come up with a technological substitute for honor?
Which version of it ? A Japanese samurai following bushido and some cretin murdering his sister because she was raped are both being honorable, as far as themselves are concerned, but their behaviors aren't really compatible.
In all seriousness, the only way I'd ever "upgrade" is when suddenly all my latest video games REQUIRE Vista to run. You know it'll happen eventually...
Hah ! My latest videogames work just fine on ZSNes;).
You can see that because if you REALLY need one you can get it, after going through the normal holiday hell. You will have to either camp out on expected ship days, get a bundle, or neurotically check web sites. I have a friend who just got one by going the web site route.
Here in Finland, I could get one just by walking to the nearest store and forking over 260 euros, if I had that much:(.
You know... after seeing several of my friends shredded and humans wonderful ability to lie while thinking they are telling the truth, I hardened up a lot and stopped being such a soft eyed romantic.
Soft eyed romantic ? You said that it's okay to lie - imply commitment without any actual intention of having any - to get sex. I said that this is wrong, since it hurts the people you lie to; and you seem to agree, or at least your comment about "shredded" friends imply that.
I'm always clear up front that I'm "dating around" and I'm always clear up front that if I ever found the right woman, I'd settle down. Both statements *are* true.
Then you aren't following your own advice, which was to lie to get what you want.
At least I'm up front about where I'm headed.
If you are "up front" about your intentions, then congratulations. But you specifically gave advice to lie about them, and that is wrong, no matter how many excuses you make.
Besides, in my experience, any sentence beginning with "At least I'm" is an attempt to justify the evil the speaker does by comparing it to presumably greater evil.
The worst liars are the people who lie to themselves-- you believe they are telling the truth and they rip your guts out.
And that, of course, makes it okay to lie to get your way ?
Different people have different opinions on political topics. Next you're going to tell me the wikipedia article on Linux is not very nice towards Microsoft.
As of this writing, the Wikipedia article about Linux mentions Microsoft 4 times:
It mentions that CrossOver lets you run Microsoft Office on Linux.
It says that Knoppix was available in Sinhalese language before Windows XP.
It compares the desktop adoption of Linux (1%) against Microsoft operating systems (90%).
It says that lack of support in Linux for certain applications and hardware designed for Microsoft Windows is inhibiting adoption.
Who says that wikileaks has "facts". They are an organization with international support, and so to some extent, act against the interests of the united states as a sovereign nation.
Please explain how your conclusion (Wikileaks acts against the interest of the United States as a sovereign nation) in the second sentence follows from your claim (Wikileaks has international support) ? And please explain how the implied statement that Wikileaks doens't have facts in the first sentence follows from your conclusion in the second ?
Or are you simply spreading FUD about Wikileaks in an attempt to discredit it ?
If you are a man of *any* means, unless you win the love lotto in your 20's, it is more fun, safer emotionally and financially to date/rent women by implying you are interested in commitment and shedding them off when they get too pushy.
Don't make false promises, especially in sexual matters. It hurts the other person a lot, and the chances are pretty good that they or some friend or relative of theirs will come after you sooner or later. Simply pay a hooker; that way, you get what you want, they get what they want, and no one gets hurt.
But wait -- that's not all you did. You also wrote a story about how the reason for this correlation is that female promiscuity causes greater competition among sperm inside a female at the same time. Woops.
Your story sounds really good -- so good that I intuitively think it's likely to be true.
I think that there's a simpler explanation: if females are promiscuous, then males have an opportunity to mate with more females than they otherwise would, and need bigger testicles to produce enough sperm to get a decent chance of impregnating them.
Firefox has a market share of about 16% globally, compared to about 77% for IE. IE is clearly the de facto standard, not Firefox.
Which version of IE are we talking about ? Different versions have different bugs and deviations from the HTML/CSS standard, so a page which works in one is not guaranteed to work in others.
That's one of the problems with "de facto" standars: nothing is really defined, so anything could change at any time, breaking anything depending on that particular feature.
As an aside, I have recently encountered websites that don't work with Firefox. One of the more annoying examples is the student website run by my university, which is used to distribute all information to students. It doesn't use ActiveX, but Firefox doesn't work with it and neither does Opera. When you complain the the IT department, their simple reply is, "use IE". They feel free to ignore Firefox and Opera because IE is the de fact standard, you see.
More likely they feel free to ignore Firefox and Opera because they are lazy and unmotivated to do their job, and possibly incompetent too. It's not unlike the janitor deciding that clogged up pipes are the way it should be, and leaving them like that.
Never attribute to philosophy that which can be adequately explained by laziness.
Another site that doesn't work in Firefox or Opera is my bank's web site, because it uses an ActiveX control. Again, they feel free to leave it this way because IE is the de facto standard.
Again, it is more likely that the people responsible for the website figure that the bank losing business is not their problem, since they get the same salary anyway, and thus they can't be bothered to fix the issue.
I don't see bundling software with your OS abuse of a monopoly if you OS has a monopoly. I do see bundling software that corrodes standards, as abuse however.
Both of which are true, of course. Opera is simply trying to ride the latter issue to try to improve the market share of the Opera browser.
Problem is, you have to have a large frontal area to ingest air to burn. Large frontal area is the enemy of high speed. Back-of-the-envelope calculations yield a frontal area for an air-breathing vehicle about four times greater than a rocket-powered vehicle with the same thrust. Larger frontal area=more drag (drag is approximately proportional to the square of frontal area), and more drag with the same thrust means much smaller acceleration.
But the frontal area has a hole in it: the air intake. In fact, the very reason for the large frontal area is to have a large air intake. Air going through the air intake goes through the engine and out of the other way, burning fuel on its way; properly designed, it doesn't slow down much in this process, and thus doesn't induce as much drag as it would if it hit the nose of the plane.
Of course not slowing down a hypersonic airflow means that you have to have a fuel burning at absurdly fast rates; in fact it would need to count as a high explosive, since the reaction front has to move at supersonic speeds just to stay inside the plane. Perhaps it would be possible to store the fuel in some semi-stable form, catalyze that to a high explosive just before being injected into the airstream, and let it blow up there ?
Hey, maybe you could design the engine so that the sonic boom gets directed inward, and use it to blow up nitroglycerin ?-)
Except that 10,000 mph is about 4.5 kilometers/second, which is more than one half of orbital velocity at LEO. An airplane going that fast should experience significant reduction in effective gravity.
I wonder if you could launch a rocket from this thing. It might save a lot of fuel reching the orbit...
But let's turn it around. Let us say for the sake of argument that from the age of five until the age of 70, you never needed medical care. You never broke anything, never had any serious illness, etc. Now, based on those 65 years of healthy bliss, do you think it is fair that you paid what probably amounted to well over $250K in taxes to subsidize someone else? In other words, you paid for something but got no benefit from your spent money.
Of course you got a benefit. Specifically, you got the benefit of knowing that you'd be cared for if you did get ill. Security is a benefit.
I know people like to think that socialized medicine is a panacea but I don't like the idea of being forced to pay for something and not getting something in return.
The downside of living in a society is that you sometimes can't have your own way.
The question, then, is which has netter application compatibility: Wine or Windows Vista ? In my experience Wine bugs mostly cause slightly corrupted graphics, while Vista causes applications to crash randomly.
You stockpile a buttload of it. In 6 hours you have one half of a buttload left. In 12 hours, one half of the remaining half will decay, but the rest remain. So in 24 you still have 1/16th the buttload, and so on, but the point here is that you will always have some left over.
Out of curiosity, what happens when there's only one particle left ? Will it develop a split personality and hover forever in some weird half-fissioned quantum state ?-)
You should be buying many, many Xboxs, but no games, since they're still not making any money off the hardware.
What are the specifications for Xbox ? Can you install Linux on it and turn it into a web server, perhaps a mirror for the GNU project as the ultimate insult ?-)
In other news, common sense and the acceptance of blindingly solid evidence contrary to creationist theory prevails and evolution ensures the survival of the Sensible.
Actually, I seem to recall that religious fundamentalists tend to have more children than non-fundamentalists (who I presume you meant by "Sensible"), so ironically it seems that evolution is preferring those who do not believe in it.
And no one's saying you can't do anything. That's just pure fallacy.
And yet every time some new form of energy generation is suggested, someone pops up and says that no, we can't do it, since it might have consequences. It is very, very, very hard to avoid the conclusion that these people will oppose any suggestion, and should be ignored.
If, however, we judge by the way the ??AA has been lobbing their lawsuits around (suing people who don't own computers and such), this will merely act as a method for the government to pick up workstations on the cheap.
How can you confiscate the computer from someone who doesn't own one ? Or does not having a computer when accused by the RIAA make you guilty of circumventing justice (or whatever) ?

Partially; however, today the summary further clarifies that it is IE's 77% market share, not Microsoft, which is conducting the abuse.
Beware of berserk percents !

No, but Linux runs Windows applications.

I've always preferred the term "vicious circle".
