This indicates that either Obama and the dems were completely lieing when making campaign promises
I tend to think that Obama meant what he said but is a spineless pussy who is afraid to stand up to the extremist element of his own party on the domestic agenda. In that respect he's not too different from our last President, whom also ran on a campaign of bipartisanship if I recall correctly.
It's amazing to look at Pelosi and the rest of the far-left partisan nutjobs and see just how similar they really are to the far-right partisan nutjobs that were running the place eight years ago. Of course this is the exact way our electoral system is set up. We've allowed these jackasses to draw their own election districts and tilt them in either direction to the point that the election is a mere formality for most Congress-critters. So they pander to the partisan base that comes out for primaries and donates the largest amount of cash. The rest of us don't matter -- except when it comes time to foot the bill for their socialist (democrat) or imperialist (republican) agenda.
Lovely choice we've got, isn't it? We need a viable third party -- failing that we need a divided government so they spend more time arguing with each other and less time implementing the ideology.
They're still hoping for the **BIG** litigation score- which will never happen as they didn't have a case in that regard to begin with.
Interestingly enough, that lawsuit could be seen as an "asset" of sorts. When you file bankruptcy you have to list any causes of action or ongoing lawsuits that you are a party to. The theory is that if the cases have merit the US Trustee can take them from you, litigate them to the logical conclusion and use the proceeds to repay your creditors.
That the US Trustee hasn't already seized their ongoing cases is pretty telling of how much "merit" they have. Of course most of here already knew that. I am somewhat surprised that it hasn't been converted to a 7 as well. How much money do they owe? Maybe the creditors will eventually push it in that direction -- it will soon become bloody obvious to them that they aren't going to see a dime if the current crew gets to keep using Chapter 11 as a shield to wait for the big score that's never gonna come.
*shrug*, history suggests that if the US withdraws then the rest of the free world will get in over it's head and come crawling to us needing a rescue sooner or later. It's cheaper to police the world than it is to fight World War III.
I'd like to see us ditch the empire too but I don't think it's feasible until another democracy comes along that has the resources and political will to take our place -- much as we did with the UK during and after WW2. India is a possibility in a few generations but they aren't quite ready yet.
If they did that the war would be over within 12 hours and the regime of Kim Jong iL would be at an end. There could only be one response for a chemical weapons massacre of millions of civilians. Here's a hint: It would involve a fancy briefcase and a small plastic card carried on President Obama's person.
My therapist told me about having to alert the authorities when a patient mentioned fighting in the car with the spouse, being distracted from the road, with their young kid in the car.
I'd be skeptical of visiting the therapist after learning that little nugget. Their ethical and legal obligation is to break confidentially if you tell them that you about to harm someone. They don't have the same obligation if you mention harming someone in the past. At that point there is nothing to be gained by breaking confidentiality (the person has already been harmed) -- your therapist doesn't exist to help some district attorney build a case against you.
There were stories that the CEO of Enron, Ken Lay called the Whitehouse after things collapsed. His call was not taken.
"Your call has been forwarded to an automated voice messaging system. 'IS THIS THING ON? *tap, tap, tap* HEY THIS IS GEORGE LEAVE A MESSAGE!' is not available. At the tone please record your message. When you are finished recording you can hang up or press '1' for more options. To leave a callback number, press '5'."
That's not likely to happen unless someone with deep pockets is willing to buy the source code and re-release it under an open source license. The job of the bankruptcy trustee isn't to punish SCO -- under a Chapter 7 his job is to maximize the value of SCO's assets so the creditors get as much of their money back as possible. Under a Chapter 11 his job is to see that they return to business as a viable entity while seeking the best possible deal for the creditors -- but seeing as how SCO has no viable business plan I'd say it's only a matter of time before it becomes a Chapter 7.
A successful first strike against a nation armed with nuclear ICBMs would require destroying all of these, just on the off-chance. How long would it take your enemy to start launching?
Why would we hit them first if we didn't have good cause to believe that they were about to hit us? If we did have good cause to believe that then it's arguably better to hit them first and take out most of missiles than allow them all to be launched. Personally I'd rather see one North Korean ICBM headed our way than five.
Even if North Korea did pose a threat to the US (which I personally think is laughable, but never mind that for now)
You probably wouldn't find it laughable if you lived in Guam, Hawaii or Alaska. Think the Americans living those regions regard our research into missile defense as a waste of money?
how would this "pre-emptive strike" fare in the international community? You think the rest of the world would be happy about it?
If the choice is between pissing off the rest of the world and losing one or more American cities then I'm going to select option A for the win.
I wouldn't expect the US dollar to remain that strong.
You really think the rest of the world is going to abandon their trading relationships over us if we took out North Korea's weapons systems? I find it unlikely. You are also ignoring the fact that we have the capability to largely disarm them with conventional weaponry -- no nukes required. Why else do you think we've stationed B-1s and B-2s in Guam? For show?
Odd how athiests will mod any pro-christian comment as "flamebait". Are they that scared of us?
Isn't it amazing how the die hard atheists are every bit as intolerant and self-righteous as the fundamentalists that they love to condemn? I have an idea: Let's put all of the true believers who are convinced that they have all the answers on an island together, arm the shit out of them and let nature take it's course. I'm sure the rest of us who don't view the universe in black and white would be much better off.
I thought it was referring to Windows XP and had already written it off as a doomed marriage...
That's not entirely fair. My marriage sucked at first but it got a little better with SP1 and really improved with SP2. I'm not at all sure what benefits we got with SP3 but my wife seems to be happier and putting out more so I'm not really complaining;)
I've never messed around with them (mainly because I run my own Linux box at home as you suggest) but I wonder if you could get bind running on DD-WRT and friends?
Let me be the first to assure that the interface is also out of place in Windows OS'es. I'm still at a loss to figure out exactly what functionality that new interface added to Office. It did require us to purchase all new manuals and devote a considerable amount of time to retraining our users. Perhaps that was the "goal"?
Non-web applications will instead behave incorrectly or, at least, produce an incorrect error message.
There are applications on the internet that aren't web based? You must be into kiddie porn, software piracy, terrorism or all of the above. Please step away from the computer and await the arrival of the friendly men with the firearms and handcuffs. Don't worry, they are there for your protection.
You're actually trying to claim that OpenDNS's bounce pages are as bad as Comcast's?
Who gives a shit about the bounce pages? My concern is that the lack of a proper NXDOMAIN response will break various applications whose authors were foolish enough to think that the RFCs would be followed. In that respect OpenDNS is no better.
I'm glad I have the knowledge and ability to run my own DNS server and don't have to deal with this bullshit.
Wow, I've been on/. for many years now and haven't gotten one of these trolls directed at me until just now. I wonder if it will show up on my achievements page?
If you told me my very life depended upon an utter stranger doing a job properly, and my choices were between an enlisted person in the US military and a college undergrad - and that is the only information I would get - I'm going with the enlisted military. Shit, it's not even close.
Yeah, that's not even close. I'm going with the person who has been taught to make life and death decisions and is aware of the consequences of failing to perform his duty. A large percentage of the college undergrads that I've met in my life are spoiled rotten brats who can't be bothered to take their studies seriously and have an entitlement complex the size of Mt. Everest.
My favorite experience with a undergrad was the one who rear-ended us while driving Daddy's $40,000 BMW SUV and then tried to pass it off as our fault. I climbed out of the wreckage of our car and my first question was "Are you ok?" and the first words out of her mouth are "WHY THE FUCK DID YOU STOP????" My response to that was "Because the light was red you stupid ignorant cunt" at which time somebody got between us, which was probably for the best. The only saving grace was she was as nasty with the cops as she was with us and the police threw the book at her.
Mind you, they aren't all like that, but I'd place my life in the hands of the GI every day of the week without hesitation.
The US intellectual property laws, which sees a man facing a decade in jail for modding consoles people bought and therefor owned
It should be obvious to anyone with an open mind that there's a bit of a difference between individuals modding hardware that they own and individuals taking software/movies/music/etc without paying for it. It should also be obvious that it isn't really fair or just for us to be running a huge trade deficit with China while their population is tacitly encouraged by their government to take millions (billions?) of dollars worth of goods created by Americans without paying for them.
Whatever else you might think of Hollywood/the software industry/the drug companies/etc they are an important part of our economy and it isn't remotely within the spirit of "free trade" for other countries to take their products without paying for them. If we had any balls we'd slap huge tariffs on every imported good from China until they addressed this issue.
Eh, I didn't say it wasn't about the money. I was commenting on the appearance of waiting to file your lawsuit until the defendant is making more money.
One term, then go get a real job.
Best. Idea. Ever.

Oh, the irony..... ;)

Alcohol has both long-term health costs for the drinker
Actually alcohol has long term health benefits when consumed in moderation. How does your vice tax take that into account?
*and* the risks to others from coordination impairment.
So we should put a vice tax on cell phones too? ;)
Amen to that!

The Bible is filled with slavery, torture, genocide, and rape. And it's disingenuous to imply that's all rainbows and lollypops
I must have missed the part where he implied that it was all rainbows and lollypops. Could you point it out for us?
I thought it was referring to Windows XP and had already written it off as a doomed marriage...

Interfering with established web protocols could be, for a private citizen, prosecuted as a criminal act.
*sigh*, don't you think that's just a tad extreme?
Obviously you might enjoy it if they cleaned out all the trolls
Are you kidding? I only come here for the trolls ;)
Wow, I've been on /. for many years now and haven't gotten one of these trolls directed at me until just now. I wonder if it will show up on my achievements page?

Only the kind that are dug out of the ground and sold for the market that's artificially manipulated to keep prices high.
