What, you buy a new phone every two years? Sucker. No reason to throw out a phone just because your contract expires. Only part on a cell phone that generally wears out is the battery and those are easy enough to replace.
Either way, I have no idea what VZW will be doing in two years. If they are doing the same stuff they are now (locking down phones but leaving workarounds for the technically savvy) they'll still have my business. If not then I'll vote with my wallet and go elsewhere. Not real worried about it though. They could care less what less than 1% of their customer base is doing with their phones. As long as the bill is paid on time why would they care if I hack my phone to climb out of their walled garden?
Never happened before, not too worried about it happening in the future.
Verizon has a short shelf life with most of their phones. After it goes off they shelf they stop bothering to release new software for it. I replaced my Motorola V9M 18 months after I bought it and it came with the exact same software as the original.
Y'all are worrying about something that I've never seen happen in nearly ten years of doing business with bed red. They want you to play in their sandbox and take steps to ensure that you do but they also accept the fact that technically literate people will step outside of that sandbox. As long as you don't do anything completely obnoxious (downloading gigabytes of porn on your non-TOS complaint tethered connection....) they really could care less.
I've hacked most of my phones from VZW. Even flashed a few of them to non-VZW software. They never said one word about it, even when I took those phones in for warranty issues. Hell, they even helped me activate a phone that I flashed to another providers firmware when I couldn't trick it back onto their network.
Take it back to Verizon and get a warranty replacement. I've hacked all my Motorola phones, smart and dumb. Verizon doesn't care. It's an assembly line operation for them. They send your broken phone back to Motorola. Motorola checks to see if the liquid damage indicators are tripped. If they aren't they honor your warranty.
Do you really believe that Verizon and Motorola have the time or inclination to check your phone to see if you installed superuser.apk on it?
Of course the bank might force you to insure your car if you want to borrow money for it but that's a private relationship that you are free to walk away from at any time.
What I would and would not prefer is irrelevant. I was responding to this post that claimed you can't have tyranny in a democracy. That's patently false, as any observer of history knows.
I thought the entire appeal of Android was that it was your phone and you could put what you wanted on it
You can. Google exerts no control over the Android marketplace. They sell apps that compete with their own Google apps (would Apple ever allow this?), apps that compete with the default carrier apps and apps that even allow you to violate the terms of service you agreed to with Verizon/AT&T/etc.
This is disingenuous. I have a Droid-X. Rooted it right out of the box and installed software that Verizon would prefer I didn't use (Wi-Fi tethering). Recently upgraded it to Froyo (Android 2.2) and was still able to root it.
The Droid-X doesn't have a "kill switch" against rooting. It has a kill switch against installing a new OS. If you want to install a different ROM image than the Droid-X isn't for you. If you simply want to customize the Android OS to do whatever the hell you want then there is nothing in place to stop you. Root it, uninstall all the bloatware, run wi-fi tethering to your hearts content.... it will do all of those things.
I was assuming it would follow standard routes such as an election of vote by representatives, city counsel, etc - therefore, no, it would not be tyranny.
you could add gobs more armour too (in a tank, adding 50 tons of extra weight means bigger engines/more fuel, if you already have that power anyway out of your little reactor, why not use it?
Hell, you could build a tank twice the size of an abrams with a dual heavy bore gun turret, weighing 200 tons or so
What happens when you need to drive your 200 ton tank across bridges that are only rated for half that weight or less? Weight isn't a zero sum game with AFV design. Even if you have the power to move that much weight around it still comes with drawbacks.
Bullshit. We aren't children that are doled out "privileges" by our parents. Anyone who can meet objective criteria and is physically capable is permitted to obtain a drivers license. The state should have no ability to deny this right except for crimes committed.
Not in Sacrifice of Angels he wasn't. Sisko was the one calling the shots. Incidentally he was well on his way to getting his ass kicked until Worf and Martok bailed him out....
There's also games to consider. The quality of a few open source games is decent but I doubt you'd see the number of titles that are available if it wasn't for the profit motive. Franchise games (games set on the Star Trek universe for instance) would not be possible at all under an open source scheme, unless the license holders were inclined to give those rights away for free.
Sisko made for an extremely charismatic leader; I'd say as good as Picard or Kirk in his own way.
Bullshit. Sisko was the most annoying ST captain ever, even moreso than Janeway. He started out just fine and then turned into a religious icon and nutjob. He reminds me of John Sheridan from Babylon 5 -- the messiah complex made both of them unbearable, IMHO. There were also plot holes in his character big enough to drive a Galaxy Class Starship through, like Captain Sisko being in command of a fleet of 600+ ships during the most pivotal battle in Federation history. Apparently all the Admirals were too busy doing paperwork to make it to the front lines.
Don't get me wrong, DS9 had some great characters. Garak is my favorite ST character out of all the series. Miles O'Brian is the quintessential "everyman" character. Kira's struggles with her past and evolution over the years were compelling writing. Even Quark was good in his own way as an outside perspective on humanity and the Federation. But Sisko? Sorry, I just can't get past the messiah complex.
blacks are a minority, have been historically oppressed, are still the subject of discrimination
I'm the subject of discrimination based on the crimes of people that shared my skin color. I'm to be penalized when I apply for school or employment because I'm a white male. This is in spite of the fact that my ancestors came here from Germany in the 1930s and had absolutely nothing to do with Jim Crow or slavery. Hell, even if they did I'm pretty sure that corruption of blood is not compatible with a Democratic Republic.
Indeed, where is Obama? Why is there little outrage from our friends on the left when Obama's justice department tries to argue that you have no expectation of privacy and it's perfectly fine for the Government to track your daily movements with no warrant? Can you imagine the outrage if Bush had argued in favor of such a policy?
Yes, but they are the most vocal and active of the party and are routinely referred to as the "base" of the party.
What's your point? The Democratic base (urban big government anti-gun liberals, public sector unions, etc.) is equally unpopular with the rest of the country. That doesn't mean you can label all Democrats as being Michael Moore though.
he corporation signs a 6 month contract which means they can't let you go "just because we changed our mind".
Actually they can. They just have to keep paying you. They don't actually have to let you work for them. Professional sports teams release players under contract all the time. It's a last resort -- paying someone not to work isn't very profitable -- but sometimes it makes sense for all parties involved.
The same people who want to use the government to legislate their morality?
In fairness, that's not all GOP'ers, it's primarily those that come from the bible belt or need their electoral votes in Presidential elections.
Since when has the Republican party since the 1980s ever done anything to shrink the government on the whole?
They haven't done much, hence the rise of the Tea Party. It will either take over the GOP and push them towards shrinking Government or splinter off as a third party that could actually manage to secure some influence (if the polling numbers that rate them higher than both the GOP and Democrats are to be believed)

Yawn
What are you going to do when your phone breaks?
Take it back to Verizon and get a warranty replacement. I've hacked all my Motorola phones, smart and dumb. Verizon doesn't care. It's an assembly line operation for them. and how long until verizon locks you out of the android market and substitutes the v-cast market instead?
That's be a neat trick, since they don't control the software on my phone. I rooted it and removed their ability to push software updates to my phone.
Besides, unless you have evidence that they intend to do that (and I highly doubt they would) it's all just rumor and innuendo.
I thought the entire appeal of Android was that it was your phone and you could put what you wanted on it

Jim Crow was supported by the majority of the electorate when it was in place.....
I was assuming it would follow standard routes such as an election of vote by representatives, city counsel, etc - therefore, no, it would not be tyranny.
The tyranny of the majority is still tyranny.
There's no reason that one should have a choice
Why not?

Driving a car is not a right, it's a privilege.
Bullshit. We aren't children that are doled out "privileges" by our parents. Anyone who can meet objective criteria and is physically capable is permitted to obtain a drivers license. The state should have no ability to deny this right except for crimes committed.
You just want to see people running around in those Edo costumes ;)
Is it a sad reflection on me that I knew exactly which episode you were referencing without clicking on your link?
You realize that the primary use of lynch mobs were to kill minorities or lower class people who the middle class thought were encroaching.
And British tax collectors......
Not in Sacrifice of Angels he wasn't. Sisko was the one calling the shots. Incidentally he was well on his way to getting his ass kicked until Worf and Martok bailed him out....

But software is infinitely reproducible for next to no cost
Too bad it's not "infinitely developable" for next to no cost.
Sisko made for an extremely charismatic leader; I'd say as good as Picard or Kirk in his own way.
