  1. Anti-Aliased fonts ? on KDE 2.1 Beta 2 and Nautilus PR 3 - are out · · Score: 2

    Hi,

I know kde has been experimenting with anitaliased fonts and have a working preview. When can we expect this to be integrated in one of the betas ?

When can we expect anything anti-aliased from the gnome/xfree camps ? IMHO this is one of the main missing features of desktop linux (along with the lack of a sorenson codec).

Read again carefully. Nothing is the difference. It's just that he hasn't coded up an attack for ssh2 yet. But it could be done in a similar way, just a few more details (I am guessing).

try mandrake 7.2 or redhat 7.0
the latest cards will only be supported by the latest XFree's and distros (if you don't want to manually upgrade to the latest XFree). Mandrake 7.2 has been the best install I have done to date, and DrakConf seems to be almost what you want. For doing more interesting stuff (like webserver or ftp server) you will still have to know that almost all config files are in /etc (as opposed to being scattered around, or in a single huge unmanageable file). I dont like compiling unless absolutely necessary. RPMs make this mostly unnecessary and manage dependencies. Compiling things is only rarely necessary and even then there are detailed instructions. If you need to compile something, its usually because the software writers have a good reason for not wanting to make that version or program easy to install !

  5. Something Good about it. on Netscape 6 Is Out (Really!) · · Score: 1

    Hi,
I have been using it since this morning. You can get it directly from
    ftp://ftp5.netscape.com/pub/netscape6/english/6. 0/unix/linux22/sea/netscape-i686-pc-linux- gnu-sea.tar.gz
    .

I found that everything runs well, and I am replacing my normal netscape with it. It is almost fully configurable, fixes the main bugs with the old netscape (resizing, scrolling) and adds some nice features (dynamic changing of text size using the mouse wheel) as well as being reasonably fast. The few downsides I found were

    - memory hog, using about 50 MB of swap now :-/ (128MB RAM)
    - stalled once while I was messing around with the configuration.
    - cant figure out how to remove/configure the few pixels high bar at the bottom.

I think netscape has done a great job with this, adding in only a few OPTIONAL commercial pieces.
And so far this does seem more stable than the last Mozilla I tried out (M18, not the latest nightly).

    to vote for third parties.

There are several reasons poeple should not choose this election to abstain or vote third-party. Among the most persuasive is that the future President will choose 2 to 4 court justices. If Bush is elected, these will be ultra-conservative people who will hve a major effect on american life (think right to abortion, separation of church and state, privacy, copyrights and monopolies).

A vote for Nader is a vote for Bush since in the absence of this choice the vote in question would probably have gone democrats.

  11. More of a smart hard link. on Microsoft Invents Symbolic Links · · Score: 1

Having read the article, I think that these are really "smart" hard links implemented transparently to the user.

Like hard links, deleting one link does not delete the file and 2 links refer to tha same physical bits.

Unlike hard links, when you change one copy, the other copy remains unchanged. This would have to be done by making a new copy of the file when changes are applied to one linked copy. This is necessary for the process to be transparent to the user.

Also links are created automatically when one file is detected to be a bitwise copy of another.

The only problem with this is there are times where we deliberately want 2 copies of a file. What happens if one of 2 files (one for backup) becomes corrupted ? What happens if i am about to trash one partition and am deliberately copying stuff to another ?? What happens if i am copying stuff to another hard drive which i intend to physically remove.

This is another example of removing flexibility and power from the user with the minimal benefits of saving some space and making the system easier (??) to use.

  13. Interesting Parallel on Scientists Poised to Create Life · · Score: 2

Several decades ago, scientists thought that all organic chemicals were different from inorganic chemicals in possessing some special "life-force". This was finally disproved when the first of many organic chemicals (i think it was ammonia) was synthesized from inorganic chemicals.

The field of organic chemistry that that this discovery heralded has affected out life significantly in a number of different way ranging from pharmaceuticals to plastics, to food products (does spam have an organic basis ?:).

Now we are again pushing back the frontiers of the mysterious "life-force" by synthesizing "life" from inorganic chemicals . It is exciting to think about what new fields and new ranges of products this may spawn. Also it is probably another good time to redefine our beliefs about "life" itself.

I am not too concerned about the negative possibilities, nearly all powerful technologies pose some sort of threat. Force after all may be used for its Good Side or for its Dark Side.

Also I firmly believe that they should consult, a board of peers rather than religious leaders. If we had been letting religion tell us what we should be studying we would still be back in the Dark Ages.

I look forward to hearing more about this reaearch and wish them the best of luck .
