I know exactly what you mean
When I was in elementary (primary) school and learning times tables... I recall being penalized for not working 24 x 6 longhand... (i.e. 6 x 4 + 10 x 6 x 2) I recognized that this was identical to 12 x 12 (simple factoring - although I didn't know the name of this at the time) My teacher scored me zero for the entire test- and accused me of cheating!...(how could a child just *know* the answer to that difficult problem)!
As you can see this scarred me for life...!
I also encountered the same challenges in University -- which eventually led to me failing the 'rote learning math exam' too many times... thus expelling me from college just when I was really enjoying the other learning experiences... and the opportunities to interact with so many other disciplines....
For a while after college, I considered this to be 'my fault'... and could easily have dropped out completely...
Instead - I was discovered by my first mentor... and learned that I was in fact creative, innovative, smart, and valuable...
Since then, I've grown in confidence, skill and expertise... while retaining my innate 'intelligence
I am considered an innovator, a troubleshooter, and a problem solver by everyone with whom I've since worked...(including a significant chunk of the FOrtune 100...)
A bonus is that I earn significantly more now that I ever thought would be possible for someone who 'failed' college...
side note: my favorite experience was leading and delivering a seminar on client management and project delivery to a bunch of ivy-league MBAs... All were surprised at my lack of credentials... luckily they only found out at the end (after theyad written their seminar appraisals!)
Having worked in IT COnsulting and HR, AND having been an H1B Visa holder for TWO companies in the Past (I now have my green card).... I can say categorically that
an H-1B would never be granted for a NEW graduate (read the terms of the visa -- I won't repeat it here)
your 'new grad from India' is likely being paid a hell of a lot less than the even the cheapest graduate from a 2 year community college would accept - and is likely to have a (real) Masters degree at least
Your company can easily DUMP the Visa holder with no labor laws getting in the way... and the poor schmuck would only have three months to find a new job WITH A COMPANY WILLING TO SPONSOR ANOTHER H-1B.
Many companies use the H-1B because the US labor market for IT professionals is so damned expensive -- A programmer in Palo Alto easily costs twice what the same programmer in Paris or London would cost... Never mind Hyderabad!
And when this behaviour becomes ingrained - companies begin to force the hourly rate down (I know this to my cost!)
As a subcontractor, I now find myself in the situation of having to work 50% more hours to achieve the same standard of living.... and I'm working in the 'bleeding edge' where there isn't a lot of competition...
I've sustained my position by continuously learning and updating my skills -- only to see my earning powere diluted by long working idiots...
Actually, the US is willing to POSTURE... very different from actual engagement.
Witness the behaviour of almost every World 'power' after the events of (name a previous war here). In almost every case, the physical response was at best a diluted form of the promised reponse (per posture)... That was one of the reasons the Nazi's in the late 30's felt so secure in their annexation program... many 'guarantees' were no more than posturing.
English terms are only beneficial to english speakers....
SELECT,, UNION, DELETE, WHERE, etc.. mean little to non english speakers.... (and may even be more confusing!)
Why do syntactic terms have to be meaningful to everyone - all that happens is that newvbies imbue terms with invalid semantics-- which they then need to unlearn!
They're looking for phonemes...
I remember a crappy little chip that we programmed in college to do 'speech generation' -- it had a digitized phoneme table, and you made it speak by sending it the code for the phoneme and the duration (in ticks)
L/AW2/ON/NG/ or S/SH/AW/UR/T
Best fun was making it try to read the project report that we had to write all about the impressive project!
Suicide is (one of?)the only ways where you are the culprit, you are the felon, but the fine is imposed on your family...
(Don't believe me? - read the not so small print exclusions on your insurance policy, pension plan, etc..)
Until that changes... you'll damn well need to prolong your life until you've managed to give everything away 'legally'!
Just wait - all those wealthy 'Christian' legislators will seek to plug this particular loophole by limiting your annual 'gifts' to a percentage of your wealth - Zeno's paradox in action.
Personally, I'd think you'd get better performance (more variables to look at... throat contricting just so, toungue twitching like that... AHA! it's a phoneme!)
Since when did 'believers' get to be in the majority....is that is the same poll that discovered: all men & women are virgins before marriage; married people refrain from sex outside of marriage; all children go to bed when told; priests are celibate; ministers always work for the best interests of their 'flock'...
BTW: education & intellect may not necessarily render God & religion obsolete... but thinking does!
This comment is defnitely going to be troll-bait... but what the hell
Oh no... the "I'm a Cristian so you're gonna burn in hell" argument again
Did you euthanize your brain when you (a) became a Krist-Yin and (b) became a comp-ASS-you-n-ate Can-serve-a-tiff
How anyone can truly look at the mess that the US is in, and still think that you have an effective Government is simply astounding!
I expect a better quality of thought from my (admittedly bright) eight year old son... So if you refer to this good ol' kristyin guv'mint as anything but a laughing stock on the world stage... then you, my friend, are hugely delusional
but we knew that already... since you're still Christian & Conservative in the face of all evidence...
If human life is so sacred to the US, then why are they still:
1. The largest designers/builders/users of WMD in the world (get rid of big mean weapons... then talk from the moral high ground... right now the US is a playground bully complaining about fair play)
2. Seeking to deny basic human rights to non-sanctioned immigrants (note... I don't use the word illegal... for obvious reasons... to be illegal, you need to have legal standing... and these folks simply don't)
3. Executing global strategies that seek to dominate not support or educate... (If you've ever seen the way american religious charities work you'll know exactly what I mean)
Give me secular over religious any day... at least when the secular maniac is killing people, he's honest about the reason why (but... you'll probably note that most homicidial maniacs are 'driven by God')
I knew my airport lounge reading would be useful for something...
This is exactly the premise of James Hogan's novel 'realtime Interrupt' (Baen Books
ISBN 0-671-57884-7)
A reasonably fun read -- intruiging if a little simplistic.

'cos if it was a ball, there'd be no corner to hide in... (and would lead to waay too many double entendres)
OPbviously a Nasa engineer.... *;oP
Therfore perfectly at home on /.

You are so right... It is all about models.. My favorite models are multi dimensional... (preferably 36-22-34 or thereabouts!)
But now it's concentrated... doesn't that make it more valuable?

Maybe that's why dutch people seem to be mostly tall? :0)
