I don't know why people think this is strange. The military program, and this one, is similar in theory to one of the logical/statistical tools the Navy uses to find lost submarines, a version of Bayes theorem of subjective probablility. Its a type of staistical game theory.

The jist of the theory is, a panel of experts would make a educated "bet" based soley on intuition, and the average of their guesses usually came up with "close" answers. That is what these two project are hoping to achieve, a cummulative, and perdictive, "best guess".

I read about it in Blind Man's Bluff book (Sherry Sintag, Christopher Drew, pub. 1999). A historical book about submarine espionage.

15 year old graphics, you mean like the Sims? Yeah that lousy "2D" program didn't sell well at all. ;)

Where the hell do you think the "founders" of the original game companies got their start? In college? A lot were indy. Go figure.

What is the most "fab" game on the Internet right now? Lemme check...ah...CS? Made by Valve right? No, a small group of "Indy" developers! Just cause it started out a modern-looking, "freeware" mod to HL doesn't count it out. There are other ways to do contribute new ideas and the mod communities are one of them. Look at Desert Combat for BF1942, it has remarkably better graphics than what EA (a big guy) put into the original BF1942, all done indy.

There will always be private development of games, as long as people can program computers. Games come from programers, not magically wished into existance by invisible corporate Gods. You make it seem that some evil Lars Ulrich is gonna come down outa' nowhere and strike all private developers dead cause they don't work for the almighty MicroSegaEaNintendoSonyEnron Corporation?

Don't have such destructively high standards. I like Serious Sam, it was designed with heart, I respect that. Most games on the market today and in the near future are mostly hype(graphics, benchmarks, boobs) and emptiness, so don't buy too much into it. If I am happy playing freeciv on my Uber-Rig that is all that should matter in the end.

The "gaming rennasaince" is alive and well and you might not be seeing it. The way people express themselves in code has changed somewhat with the times. The energy that once went into hacking the next great "civ game" is now in the mod community and very healthy.

A lot of bigger game companies play marketing games with thier products and don't value supporting and fostering creative talented teams and giving them some decision power in the creation process.

To them it is sbout control, psycographic marketing, and deadlines. They can't fathom what makes a good game (lots of marketing right?), because the process is often run by "suits" with MBAs interested only in job portfolio building.

Consoles provide a consistant platform for developers therefore gets more games and sales. A lot of time in PC devolopment goes into compatability testing for the various hardware configs' out there. For instance, a PS2 only needs to tested once to ensure a consistant product experience across all PS2s. This helps devs' a lot. You dont have to do a lot of tech support for a console, it is lot more trouble free.

IBM's current corporate strategy is to make money off of providing tech services. They have the economies of scale to supply and develop tech for other companies rather than deal directly to the everyday consumer. It's a lower risk position to let other companies do the speculation about consumer trends, and just provide services to the risk takers.

To me, videos are just part of the non-interactive fluff. Fighting games today have to be more than 8 fighters, 10 arenas and a story mode to keep me interested. For 50$ I want fun things to do with my fighters such as, RPG building type modes, challenges, and lots of unlockable goodies, rather than just the straight "vs" stuff. It has to be a total package and I want to experience the world that these fighter live in. Online is cool, but I you still need more to have fun with.

My rule is 1$ an hour. Sports games, RPGs, and GTA games give you what you pay for. The "fast and the flashy" action titles and fighting games should only be 20$ a pop. It is usually better to wait for the price drop.

This reviewer's opinion is typical of the burnt out mentality you get when you work around games too long. I used have that attitude when I worked for a games store. You see so many games it all becomes a blur and you only see the loudest out of the crowd, or what you're told to push/sell as the next big thrill. Now that I don't work in the industry anymore, I can enjoy gaming again.
