  8. Re:You're not very smart, are you? on Cross-OS File System That Sucks Less? · · Score: 1

Hey, I am not a FS wizkid but, I have noticed this fact on my external USB HDD that has one NTFS partition of 20GB. The write performance is good when the partition is almost empty. But once the partition is almost full (with only about 2-4 GB left on it) the write performance is pathetically slow (1GB/1Hr). But with my other 17GB partition, on the same drive, which is reiserfs formatted I don't see any such problems. I don't have any read performance issues with the NTFS partition in any case.

Even more strangely, I had the same write performance issues under windows XP with VFAT on the 20 GB partition when it became almost full. But the very same partition under Linux had no such write performance issues when the partition became almost full. I don't have rw support for NTFS in Linux, so I couldn't check that.

So to me it seems like the problem is not in the FS structures per se, but in the way windows handles them.

  9. Re:The first world displays massive ignorance on How Classsmate PC Stacks Up Against OLPC · · Score: 1

Atleast in India I don't think thats the case. Most children will try to keep their things safe. Most. The kind of environment as incorporated during the design of OLPC laptop is the norm here. Rain, sand... etc. All those situations will throughly be put to test in the hands of a typical poor kid here. However, $200 or even for that matter $100 price tag is way way too very expensive for any of the poor family parents to give it to their kids.

But on the brighter side, the small schools where these poor kids typically attend (a small percentage of poor kids do attend school), might be able to afford a few of them. In which case the schools will take steps to protect their property by imposing necessary restrictions. This might actually make Classmate Laptops feasible for them. Hence, a healthy competition might trigger off bringing down the prices further. Which might _eventually_ make them affordable for the poor families to give it to their kids.

So I definitely want to see competition in this market.

Will someone explain how the hell having Visual radio service (provided by a Finnish Company and not an Indian one) has anything to do with India becoming an **IT Super Power**?

I think thats just because Indians are trigget happy with their cell phones and big entertainment buffs. They are probably the biggest chatter boxes on the planet as well (a fact well recognized by MSN and Yahoo!). Most of my *sane* friends here in India spend anything like 10-15% of their monthly income for cell phone bills (Don't ask me about the insane). And the Finnish company recognizes this and is introducing this service here in India. They are just trying to make a few bucks here.

By the way what has Indian govt got to do with this???!!!

Of course if the Indian Govt had a hand in this, the service would be "delayed" indefinitely (the indefinitely is normally not told. It is meant to be figured out). And our honorable elected representatives ("the government") would pocket the money.

I would really like to see the price MS and co. will charge per hour for this. Esp considering the fact that there are cyber cafes in most small sized towns where you can get to use a computer, thats also connected to the internet (though very slow), with a host of applications/games installed on it (all pirated) for $0.40/hr. And that includes the electricity charges the cafe incurs, internet connection charges, any maintanence of HW, plus friendly help with software usage to customers. That would be something really tough to beat in my opinion. Also, considering the fact that some Indian hardware vendors have started offering basic computers, devoid of any software, that come with an AMD semperon and cost in the vicinity of $250 (add a $6 for the pirated SW above), it would be really interesting to see this model work here in India.

Microsoft can beat all these browsers and win back the browser market in no time by using its desktop dominance to its advantage. As Miguel de Icaza talks about the threat of XAML on his blog as reported here . Icaza states that it would take atleast 2-3 yrs after the launch of longhorn for longhorn to really catch up and become the dominant desktop OS. And that would be enough time for XUL-Mozilla to win the minds of the public. But with Micrisoft planning to put Longhorn features into XP that catch up time becomes effectively halved or less. Adoption time of XP-SP2 can give MS a better statistic to be prepared and also improve upon this adoption for Longhorn features into the mainstream XP. This would tilt the tables on Gbrowser, Firefox, Apache et. al.

If it does not provide backwards compability, I think this is a mistake that M$ is making. The same mistake that Intel made with Itanium. AMD didn't clone Itanium, but provided a backwards compatible x86 extension. And.... Itanium is as good as dead.

I understand that the situation with Linux is different, in that its not compatible with xp/2000 in the way AMD was.

But, I think there must be a way F/OSS can magnify this mistake of M$ like AMD did with Intel. I think its time F/OSS, instead of playing safe like ol mgmt folks, should make a risk, albeit calculated one. I think they should bet on XUL, the way M$ is betting on XAML.

    - Make XUL an independent std. Integrate it into GNOME/KDE (provide libraries for XP/2k/2k+3) for application development. PROVIDE backwards compatibility for older apps.

    - Make mozilla show XUL marked up sites. (I am willing to host my site with XUL. I am sure tens of thousands of others will)

    - Push XUL to be a web std. That will be a key selling point for corporates to embrace.

    - Think for more selling points. ACT STARTING NOW!

I am sure M$ like Intel will be forced to embrace XUL/Mozilla. If they dont, ppl will ignore them, just like they did with Intel.
