    I used to smile when playing games, now it's all too serious and realistic. I've actually gotten anxiety from playing some of the newer games, and that's not really cool.

    Why is that necessarly bad? Shouldn't you feel some anxiety playing Resident Evil? That seems to be the point of the horror genre, whether it be game, movie or book.

    Downloading maybe not, but watching a show or movie certainly is. Just because YOU don't think a family can share those activities doesn't mean its not possible.

    You're right; the kernel is much, much more difficult to package and test. Its not that the vendors don't provide updates, its the huge lag time between when the fix is available from kernel.org and the various distros.

    No, I'm not assuming either, I mearly was trying to illistrate that his time and skill are worth something. Enjoyment and education have little to do with the equation; I enjoy and learn while I'm at my job all day, yet I'm still paid the same rate if I don't.

    Everyone's time does have a value because there is a limited amount of it.

    You COULD build your own home on your own too and it'd be cheaper.. but your time IS worth something, so typically you have a group of others do it for you.

    You still have to wait for the distro to package said changes.

    When I used Linux, the Kopete package was far behind, even though I needed the newest version because of protocol changes. The fact is that it takes quite a bit of time for distros to actually build the package to update the kernel. Which was the point of my post.

    You just restated my position. From a systems administrator standpoint, that's a crumby way to get updates to the core OS. The change in stable vs. unstable branch only makes this problem worse, because now an admin isn't sure if the newest kernel has unstable features.

    How is getting the latest ISO of a distro and running it to upgrade the tedious method? More to the point, why should I have to update applications which ARE working fine just to get security fixes to the kernel? How much lag time is there between a fix getting into the kernel and the distro incorporating said fix?

    Perhaps you should try to address my post instead of writing poor insults.

    Just think about fingerprinting, it hasn't once stopped people from committing a crime, but it sure does make it easier to catch the bad guy.

    No, it hasn't. It doesn't help at all if the person commiting the crime never had a record. Nor does it help lead to suspects.

    Also these will help prevent innocent people from being wrongfully arrested.

    Really? Finerprints have prevented innocent people have been sitting on death row for years, only recently being released? And they've stopped the execution of innocent people? These things have and continue to happen, finger prints or not. I suspect cameras will have the same effect.

    When you pull up a license plate, you get the make, model, year of the car, and the driver's name and address.

    Yup, and I'm sure this automated system will be able to correctly identify the make, model, and year of the car to which the plate was attached. And the person who registered the car is of course ALWAYS the driver.

    Took me all of a few hours to get it working the way I wanted. Only functional difference between the two programs is that RDC Menu is more polished (graphics, icons, language translations, etc).

    So how much do you normally get paid an hour? Unless its $10 or less, you've spent more money writing it yourself than if you just paid $20.

    The problem is that upgrading an entire distro is a pretty challenging task. So now not only do you need to update the kernel, you need to update ALL the software that came with the disto? That's even worse. At least with the older model, you had the option of just doing the kernel (which I've done).

    Kernel security / bug fixes should not require that you also update your applications.

    Also, you now have to wait two to three YEARS before getting security fixes? That's simply unacceptable..

    Why would Linux adopt this new model? It seems like a poor decision. System administrators WANT a version that only has bug / security fixes. MS has said that no new features would be added via service packs anymore after the inclusion of the firewall in XP SP2.

    Didn't the same things get said about "romance" books when the printing press was first invented that people today are saying about video games? Oh, its differnet now because its interactive. You're not really do anything reading a book like using your imagination or anything.

    Ya, it was stupid for me to leave a platform that had me spending more time looking through obscure documentation, DID have unexplained crashes, and didn't run all the software I wanted to run.

    Fusion power isn't viable yet either..

    Pretty recently; I switched back to Windows in 2006. I was running the latest Mandriva at that time.

    Things have improved dramatically in the last couple of years.

    Again, its said a lot, but it hasn't panned out for me yet.

    Fixing bugs doesn't mean anyone is looking at the code! It just means someone found a bug, and it was fixed. Fixing bugs doesn't mean that anything was done except the fix; security holes could still exist, and even the fix could introduce some. Yes, all programmers on all platforms make mistakes.

    If you count users of the software as the 'many eyes' then Windows blows OSS out of the water.

    I checked the box of the Wii I bought (used). It should have come with a nunchuck, yes, but it made no mention of any games being included. The box says nothing about sports, and the only disc it included was a firmware update.
