"Yeah dude, just take this stuff but I can't give you any specifics 'cause I'm a hacking fool and just get your DSP's from Asterisk and PBX that shit."
Do you have any idea what you're talking about? You kids, you scare me and keep me buying MRE's.
If you all spent as much time building shit as you do do having retarded arguments, well...
I'd having my flying car I'd just say traffic and above flying car would be good to go I'd nod my head towards the square (on my non-existent) 3D television that showed Jenna Haze Interactive I wouldn't have to hear about the fucking "BROWSER" because the "BROWSER" didn't exist.
You could be building the above... But... I see that "Whose dick is bigger" will continue to be the story around here.
Aww, you sound like a sweet, naive student who just posted from the notes his bitter Comp Sci professor gave him.
Never mind, this sounds like a "hey guys, check out my term and look at my conclusion" post.
Read your post again, and ask yourself if you made any attempt at supporting yourself, listed any facts, or did your "My interest in Ruby would be greatly increased if I saw it do something that very few other languages could do, preferably no language that was in mainstream use" just for the purpose of us validating it.
I mean, that is the most blatant conclusion, guaranteed not to piss off a Comp Sci professor and not point any attention to yourself...Fuck it, you'll get an A.
I am viewing this page and nothing other, yet Firefox is taking 65mb. Why does a single program that loads websites need 65mb of freaking RAM?
Firefox was a good dream. Why did they just announce a mobile version? I've been using Opera on my Treo for a year.
You want to know why...because you all argue and bitch about what should/shouldn't be included and things get sidetracked and the next thing you know a shitty release is out that people complain about.
Sound familiar Open Source guys? Sounds a bit like every other software company that says they're going to meet the users needs.
Open Source large projects have become as shitty as closed source ones. Firefox ejaculates memory and we all know it. Why make excuses.

Back this up with facts.
Show me a Wall Street Journal article that shows this.
I love Linux but you pretty much have the following:
The Old Linux Guys who beat their chests and pull out hair The New Guys who won't listen to anything unless it says Linux is the best and then they get into a distribution arguement
Then you hear from the people that ACTUALLY WORK IN A COMPANY ENVIRONMENT that realize that Linux has its place for certain system applications. They also realize that it actually does cost money to switch to Linux.
Yeah Linux is free and takes less hardware...but there is a little thing called OVERTIME.
You want me to pay people to learn a new system and them pay them overtime because they went home to their Windows/Apple system, forgot how Unbuntu/Slackware/Fedora/Gentoo+KDE&GNOME worked and had to come in on the weekend?
No. Ain't happening. You all had your shot 10 years ago and all that is happening now is another generation of recruited zealots (kids) are trying and failing to succeed but they are succeeding at annoying actual professionals.
What is up with the whole Linux thing lately here. Anyhow...
You'd think that they would have caught this during, I don't know, quality control, testing, beta's, simple common sense. This is a prime example of get it out the door or I won't get my bonus. The gaming industry is heading towards the shithole that every other entertainment industry eats from.
Games have producers. Why the hell does a game need a producer?
Oh, that's right...most game companies are owned by entertainment companies who saw "Video Game Industry Worth Billions" headlines.
And what do we get, 800,000,000 first person shooters. Hell, GQ, Esquire have almost as many FPS ads as "insert magazine name here" does. Playboy even does a yearly spread on characters from games.
The aliens will attack and a whole generation will think "Laser to the leg, fuck that I'll regenerate it and fuck that noob up"
Are you 13 years old or something? 60% of health costs aren't IT related you retard. Do you really think a Linux based system is going to decrease your health insurance costs? HMO+Insurance Company*Lawyers/*+-Lobbyists decide your medical costs. Don't like it, move somewhere else, break a bone, get a disease and see how many months it takes before you get in.
Why do these kind of stories even get posted on Slashdot. Stick with IT about IT stories. "If this catches on", I've heard that before:
"If this catches on, Linux will rule the Desktop!" "If this catches on, KDE and Gnome will put Microsoft out of business!" "If this catches on, OpenOffice will put Microsoft out of business!"
Also, what's with all the chest-beating, ball-grabbing, flabby it guy trying to be tough Linux crap lately. Also, where did all the ads go?
"Hey Guys, Kernel 2.0.3.4.1.2.325.234234324 was released today" "Linus might be on TV not sure let you know later" "Every Goddamn release of support for some game by that company that tried to port games to Linux" "Micro$oft!" "CowboyNeal!!!!"
How the hell does this site stay around. You all must have osdn by the balls or something.
A lot of people are content to sit and watch Dancing With the Stars.
A lot of people are content to sit and argue over which politician is the least corrupt so they can vote for them.
A lot of people are content to sit and pour over their bills while wracking their brains on how they are going to put their kids through college.
A lot of people are content to sit and just sit.
This is not the 1960, JFK is not the President, the purse strings are not wide open and last time I checked...the dollar sucks in Europe, China is kicking our ass when it comes to economy and pretty much everybody hates us.
I love space travel, I was in the 5th grade when Challenger blew up. Because we were the oldest class they rolled a tv so we could watch it. No matter how much it sucks, things are different.
I'm betting you are in your first semester of your second year of college. You sound like something a Prof would say.
If Microsoft or Linux or Apple had been mentioned in the title or article there would have been 700 and most of them would be:
Windows..."something or other" Mac..."We'd do it better" Linux..."LINUX!!!!!"
Instead we get a bunch of jokes. Hey tech guys, what are you going to do when the doctors are gone? I see a nerd with a gangrene leg and 20 of you arguing over what to do while...you figure it out.
Who cares! This is another "Slashdot is going down hill and trying to slow the descent" thread. Anybody been to osdn.com lately? It points to web.sourceforge.net and their main link is ThinkGeek. This site is full of the most bitter, angry, she should have been mine, mom broke down the door while I was "busy", people.
If you'll spent a tenth of the time trying to make something better instead of 99.9% arguing, we'd actually have a real doll that washed the dishes, did laundry and moved and I'd still make fun of you.
My niece and nephew love the new movies, just like I loved the first three.
Yeah, I thought the new ones were crap...but I get to sit with the two of them and play the Lego Star Wars games and hear them go "PSSHH, PSSHH, Uncle ****** get that guy!" I also get to build starships and landscapes with them that I bought. And you know what, I never once thought about George Lucas. My only thought was that we were going to have a lot of fun doing this together. Is George Lucas getting a cut, so what! What I gain in the time I spend with them is better than money and petty crap.
Anybody ever think that he didn't care about what adults thought of Star Wars? Look at his movie list on IMDB and what do you see? Movies that he makes to spark the imagination of children. He's a big kid and that is a good thing.
When the first RISC chips came out and Apple seized on them, there were plenty of Apple clone makers. Apple and Jobs either bought them up or used marketing to put them out of BUSINESS. Kinda sounds like Microsoft doesn't it. IBM tried the same thing with their stupid motherboards which had "daughter" cards that contained all the important stuff and you had to upgrade the whole "daughter" card when you wanted more. Other PC makers tried this (did someone order an Epson?) but IBM quickly realized that they could do better off of mainframes.
Wait, let me repeat that....
BUSINESS
Anyone who thinks Steve Jobs is the ultimate geek supporter is retarded. Steve Jobs likes money. Steve Jobs likes when his company makes money and he will squash anyone who keeps that from happening. Bill Gates likes money. Bill Gates likes when his company is making money and he will squash anyone who keeps that from happening. Repeat with Sony, Nintendo, Schnucks, McDonald's, Walmart...
I dont' think a lot of you understand what it it means to be a business.
That's how long I've been hearing about Linux taking over the desktop. Have you looked at a Linux Journal lately? It is a whole bunch of tech crap that you and I understand but my grandmother wouldn't.
And isn't that the whole point of desktop Linux...my Grandmother could run it....
Eat me.
You put any Linux distribution against XP and Apple and try to convince my Grandma how easy it is. She'll get a switch off the apple tree and tell you to bend over.
This is the typical "Microsoft Sucks d00dz thread". Hey, where would the military be without Powerpoint. Huh...yeah..huh...
From what I've gathered from reading this site for shitloads of years i've realized a few things:
1. Lot of high school students who are doing the "Micro$ft Sucks" thing 2. LINUX IS PERFECT AND YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT thing 3. IT people who are in their first job and don't understand their workplace and more importantly, the people that they walk past while going to get coffee. You know, the other employees of the company. 4. Total and complete assholes that laugh when they see Jimmy Fallon yell MOVE.
Take the time to get to know the 60 year old that was originally traumatized 15 years ago when they took away her daisy wheel typewriter (though they were great for filling in forms, looking at you every government in the world). Observe what people are doing and offer suggestions that will help them.
IT guy, you don't run the company. You can be replaced. What the boss of your boss and his boss choose, well, you can't change that because you're that guy from SNL.
There hasn't been a rational argument on this website in many years. You want to convince people, write a REAL DAMN OFFICE replacement.
How is crap like this rated as funny? Wait, now I remember...
LINUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why don't you bring up to your boss how you're going to switch the whole company over to LINUX!!!!!!!!. After you tell him the software is free, why don't you explain how much it will cost to train the employees.
"There's a penguin on my screen!!!!!" "This don't look like Windows, where's my start button?" "Um, where's Word?" "I used to click here on my shortcuts for Excel and it is not working, and where the hell are my reports!"
I personally use Slackware, but Linux!!!! had its shot years ago and you all couldn't come up with a standard. Remember when Linus was on the cover of every magazine? Remember when Marc Andreesen was on the cover of every magazine?
Good logic. Is this why there are no dominant cable companies offering VOiP?
Oh wait...Charter, Comcast, Time/Warner...
Your conclusion is flawed. Vonage started as a couple of people who saw a market and took advantage of, damn the consequences. They've known for some time that they were infringing on other's work. If I owned a company and someone tried to muscle into my territory by stealing my patented technology, I damn well will go after them legally. And I'll win.
Slashdot Law School - I'm right and you're wrong and you have to give me everything for free, not as in beer, just because I want it.
And to the guy above with the $60-100 bill, prove it. Find one, scan it, highlight the charges and post it. Otherwise you sound like a Slashdot editor who has no facts but enjoys pulling bullshit out of your ass.
And TI-8477, simply put - prove it. Do a comparison of the "big telco's" business plan and Vonage's.
Wow, you and every other whiner in this thread must have purple skies and cotton candy clouds in your world.
Maybe the guy has a new good idea, doesn't want it to be exploited, and maybe...just maybe would like to make some profit off of it. You all act like making money is a crime.
Voted 5 for being informative.

Do you have any idea what you're talking about? You kids, you scare me and keep me buying MRE's.
At last! Another insightful, informative article that told us nothing!
Who pays these people? That's right, if it has any kind of tech buzzword it gets published, bought, invested in, fawned over and masturbated on.
Man, reminds of about 10 years ago...
