  1. do different useful jobs on Taking Your Programming Skills to the Next Level? · · Score: 1

HI I was in the same situation programming/maintaining Unix Server/Clients in the financial industry for about 5 years. After few years I wanted to learn more skills. I fancied giving training in programing so I got a job doing just that. After three years, I joind a vendor doing mobile phone operating system as software enginer (debugger/tester). during which, I used to hear a lot of horror stories about support in the software industry. I fancied doing that so I joined a vendor for real time operating system as technical support engineer level 2 and 3. I liked it so much that I stayed there for about 7 years. It was the most challenging aspect of my career. the interactionwiht other software engineers formoutside the company was incredible and a mine of learning. Few months ago I wanted more challenging job, and thats when I was transferred as a senior enigner in the professional services department. This is the ultimate challenge for me. The ability to take on projects at very short notice about a subject you vaguely know and be able to deliver on time. So now I am on the road and work from home :-) and travelling the world. The pressure is intense and can be very stressful. So I spanned Software engineering, training, technical support and back to software engineering. Todo all these jobs I have accumulated a large library that beats my local IT library. My advice is to read a lot of books specially about algorithm and patterns, operating systems. I don't know about languages but I am sticking to C/C++ and Java. I don't write much programs in my spare time (I have to protect my marriage) except when I write some samll utilities using Java mobile for phones and PDA, nothing big just small useful utilities. I would say the technical support engineer (level 2 and 3) gave me the most experience as I had to learn the internal of the operating system and that knowledge was a tremendous learning experience. Now I am aiming to be a consultant. Amazing after all that I am still happily married :-) Cheers

  3. TomTom, GPS and WM5 on GPS for the Windows Mobile 5? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I recently purchased (first use of GPS for me) TOMTOM Navigator 5 with bluetooth, running on O2 ZDA Exec (I-mate Jasjar or HTC universal) over here in London. The software is pretty good and the instructions are very clear. Route calculations are very fast, fix acquisitions nor more than few seconds at most. Full post code search. Takes tiem to get used ot the instructions, for example, (not usre if it is a bug) ona roundabout in London it told me to take the fifth exit when there is none. Later as I was driving around the roundabout I noticed a road entering the roundabout. To TomTom it was an exit, according to the road rules it isn't since it is incoming only (the board at the roundabout says so too). Another mistake it made, it told me to turn left into a one way road, I did not and took the most logical route (after a lot of swearing from black cab drivers) and it recalculated my new route within a second. I have tested it on routes between London, Oxford and Swindon. Next week it is the country side. Some people here says bluetooth sucks on WM5. I am not sure how they found out that. I have been using my XDA for about six months, and I use bluetooth almost 20 hours a day non-stop. It is used for synchronization, business card and file exchange, and finally and most importantly, I use it with my bluetooth car kit. It never dropped a beat. It works fine with TomTom bluetooth GPS (I almost don't think about it as I take forgranted it is there, My bluetooth is on 24 hours). Other applications had no problem finding the bluetooth GPS receiver and communicating with it. Overall, I would have liked to see a better TomTom database and some utilities to make the most of the GPS when it is not used for navigation. Hope this helps.

Must be very dangerous. from the article: "Most of the alleged hacking took place in 2001 and 2002. At one stage the US thought it was the work of the al Qaeda terror network." they have some serious fucked up security/admins personnel there. "It is alleged that he used software available on the internet to scan tens of thousands of computers on US military networks from his home PC, looking for machines that might be exposed due to flaws in the Windows operating system." OK Now I know the military are using windows. Let me fire up my port scanner and I will be famous. "The charge sheet alleges that he hacked into an army computer at Fort Myer, Virginia, where he obtained codes, information and commands before deleting about 1,300 user accounts." Are you sure the sys admin did not fuck up here. "Other systems he hacked into included the Pentagon's network and US army, navy and air force computers." Jesus Christ ... he could have brought the mighty US down. they are going to try to make an example of him to cover their fukced up security as it happened on previous occasions. What a load of BULL...

Hi, My current situation: I have survived 6 redundancies, and 3 managers changes. Current situation is my Dpartmental manager (worldwide) sucks and she has no idea about my job, for example I aksed for another network card and she said why can't you use the one you have and move it form machine to machine? yes .. that bad. My line manager even worse. I only se ehim once a week if I am lucky and he only take cues from one other engineers who never consults with the rest of the team. My team sucks too and each for himself we almost never consult each other on any thing - too much egoes going around. I have no career path to look forward too. Every morning I say to myself "this is my last and I must leave". Everymorning, well ... about two minutes later ... I calculate my mortgage and my children school fees. I want them to have the best and so I stay in my job hoping there will be another round of changes. I am very good at my job and I love my job, it gives a lot of satisfaction. I am not leaving but I am looking for a new job - take it easy, stay cool and plan my next move. I can take the bullshit and I am earning a very good money. Either a job will come along or something will change AGAIN in company. Until then I go to my cubicle, do my job and then go to my family. However, if I was single and younger and confident of my skills and can sell my skills better in my competitive environment then I would leave wihtout a thought. Are you a fool? maybe and maybe not - it depends on your current responsibilities, how aggressive you are in selling your skills and finding a job. Sometimes, when you are young (younger) you've got to take a chance or you will be left behind and many missed opportunities. Only you can answer this question ... and whatever the answer .. a VERY GOOD LUCK to you. :-)

  7. Gaming on Linux on Linux Live Gaming Project · · Score: 2, Informative

I am a gamer and I always play Americas Army Operations (www.americasarmy.com). It is a free FPS game. Before Linux I was playing it on Windows, and like most people here I was sceptic about the Linux Version. 1) I wasn't sure that Liux and openGL is up to the task in Graphics, 2) Sound quality. That is until I installed it on Linux. It Runs exactly the same, and the sound is eactly the same. The virtual memory in Linux helps it to run faster. I have now ditched the Windows Version and play it on Linux only. I do my part my talking to other on-line users who uses Windows and how over time it slwos down; things llike application runnings, daemon running the background and they don't understand enough to close some of them. Windows give you no hint about these background processes; spywares, adwares, and the virtual memory and filesystem performance itself. The hard of this is convincing them that Linux is not really difficult. You just need to learn what you have Learned on Windows. For example how to find the services and close some of them. On Linux at least it gives a couple of lines of description. Get a Distro, install everyting, get the game and install. The bad thing is that you have to learn how to get a new driver for your card, such as Nvidia and compile and install it (although it is simple, it scares some Windows users). I haven't tried other games, but AAO does a fine job of installing and no configuration necessary except what is in the game itself. Furthermore, it works on every distribution I tried, Fedora, Yoper, Mandrake and Suse. The nice thing about Yoper is that the nvidia driver is installed for you. Just install the game and go. I ditched Windows, unless of course there is a game I want and it is not on Linux. I think game developers need to have a look at Linux and developing a Linux version. Most games are willing to pay for their version. In my experience Linux is a much more stable platform for games. It just need a chance and if game developers work together with Linux vendors they can produce a very competitive gaming platform. My small opinion :-)
