Nerds' penises don't nessecarily "penetrate some medium." And if streamlining is a necessity, how can that curved dick guy on revenge.com (who got revenge on himself) get any action?
Anybody got a link to the guy who got revenge on himself?
I don't agree with everything you've said simply because, you are right in that I have some other options, and obviously I am working on using them, but that still doesn't mean I don't hate on those who force my hand on an issue I am not really related to. Hence my origial "yay, packet SPEWS" post.
But at least you made an intelligent argument unlike some of these retards with their "WHY DO YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO EMAIL ME?! (I'm not emailing you, I'm emailing my customers)" bullshit arguments. Kudos for making a decent point.
I like how you dismissed the argument that most of the people who are being "protected" by SPEWS are completely ignorant of the spam-nazi ideology and potential loss of legitimate email. I guess that's a non-issue when your NetAdmin ego trip is focused on the anti-spam jihad.
As for your question, why don't we change to a different ISP:
Well kid, you see, you might be able to hop your ADSL account from provider to provider whenever it suits your fancy. And perhaps at the clown-shoes operation you somehow got hired to admin at, your operations are small time enough that you can hop your single data T1 around from provider to provider. But see, we don't just have a "fancy T1 line" as you put it. We have a channelized DS-3 with 18 voice T1s and two data T1s. We have a negotiated package deal that includes special long distance rates as part of our contract. Our voice T1s are what power our business (we do telecom/voice services). So we can either kick in the extra $1200 a month for an entirely seperate T1, or dump the whole package and start over again (aka go out of business).
So when some self-important anti-spam nazi nerd tells us "JUST CHANGE TEH ISP AND JOO WILL NOT BE FILTERED" those of us who work in real business and have some idea of contracts and more levels of service than just a single data T1, have no choice but to laugh.
My questions to you is:
WHY should I be forced to change ISPs in order to email people who are "protected" by SPEWS but WANT to receive email from me? If they want to receive the email, how is SPEWS helping them?
You can't find another ISP for your T1 connection? OK, you may be in a 1-year contract, but at the time that contract ends, you should discuss the issue with Lightyear.
We are a telecom company, we have a channelized DS-3 full of T-1s, most of which are voice. We get our data T-1 through that same setup. Of course we could be pushed by anti-spam nazis into changing providers, and therefore paying extra loop costs to provision a T-1 outside of our DS-3, I suppose.
Are you so much more importaint than I that my right to choose not to recieve your email is less importaint than your right to force your emails upon me aginst my will?
I'm not emailing you asshole.
I'm emailing my customers who are users of ISPs who tell them nothing about their use of SPEWS. They then call us and claim they never got their bills or statements, and we're supposed to explain to them how THEIR ISP is behaving (choosing to throw away their legitmate emails without notifying them). Then when we tell them their ISP is using SPEWS and they call their ISP, their ISP's tech support retards tell the customers they have no idea what SPEWS is, and we look stupid and lose customers.
We are not spammers. We don't support spamming. But for the greater good of the anti-spam jihad, we are blacklisted because the ISP of our ISP doesn't willingly cancel spam accounts.
Your bullshit about YOUR right to choose to deny email from me is all great in theory. But the honest truth the anti-spam community doesn't think about is a majority of users "protected" by SPEWS don't know what SPEWS is, don't know they can and do lose legitimate email to it, and they wouldn't CHOOSE to use it if they had any idea what sort of ideology was behind it and how many innocent people are being filtered. You people use the ignorance of the masses to enforce your ideas of what anti-spam should be on everyone else, and those of us who have nothing to do with spamming must suffer for it.
No admin should employ SPEWS without properly educating the management of his company on the policies of SPEWS, including the potential loss of valid email. No ISP should employ SPEWS without educating their users of the policies of SPEWS, including the potential loss of valid email. If those two conditions were met, all of our customers who call us saying they didn't get their emails would know what SPEWS is and why they didn't get the emails they WANTED to receive from us.
These blocklists are very effective in stopping the entry of spam into a user's network.
These blocklists are also very effective in keeping me from sending email from my T1 from Lightyear Communications.
I'm sure there are a million other guys out there with a thousand dollar a month T1 that is completely worthless for emailing customers thanks to these blocklists.
Go ahead and shout "spam-haus" and tell me I'm doing business with spammers or companies that support spammers, or in this case, our company's T1 is provided by a company (Lightyear) that gets their upstream from a company (UUNet), that supports spammers.
I guess by associating with spammers through about 4 levels of indirection, we are guilty and need to be punished.
Spam-Nazi apologists are worse than Spam-Nazis themselves. I was a Spam-Nazi myself until suddenly the punishment was applied to me, and there was nothing I could do about it.
I hope SPEWS is pinned by packetting until they shut down.
"ext2 might be a bitch to bring up after a crash, but I'll be damned if it isn't stable"
Umm. Well then, you're obviously damned. Especially since you probably run ext2 async on production systems like your mail server, which could easily be considered violating RFC 1123 section 5.3.3 regarding Reliable Mail Receipt.
"When the receiver-SMTP accepts a piece of mail (by sending a "250 OK" message in response to DATA), it is accepting responsibility for delivering or relaying the message. It must take this responsibility seriously, i.e., it MUST NOT lose the message for frivolous reasons, e.g., because the host later crashes or because of a predictable resource shortage."
I think we've all heard Linux kiddies cry once or twice about losing an ext2 mount on a particularly unlucky crash. I'll stick to UFS/FFS with soft-updates, thanks.

engineer
n 1: a person who uses scientific knowledge to solve practical problems
The term engineer used to mean "someone who operated an engine." The term has been expanded to involve those "who [use] scientific knowledge to solve practical problems." But the "hard sciences" community often wants to exclude software engineers because our science is entirely informational. Being informational is not the same as being theoretical. Our problems are practical, often times much more applied and practical than many hard science problems (look at the ratio of "pure science" in CompSci vs other sciences).
Then again, we are all familiar with the arrogance and cut-throat nature of the science community as a whole, as far as it stretches back in modern history. Hard science "engineers" playing their political and word games make politicians and journalists looks like saints.
I think the fact that we don't code for fame (try to name some famous programmers who are famous to anyone except other programmers) and to make a history book "name" for ourselves makes our motives and our decidication to our science or "engineering" if you prefer, much more respectable.
Times change. Word definitions change. The hard sciences academic conservatism will not stop the wheels of time from moving beyond them. This is the information age, welcome to reality.
I was reading your point with as open mind as possible until you dropped this statement:
"Says alot about white people huh?"
Fuck you. "White" people as a whole are composed of people of hundreds of races with thousands of different backgrounds. If you want to say there's some kind of genetic or racial based racist behavior in "white people" then I guess it follows that it is in our nature to enslave you and stick your ass in a cotton field. If this is the appropriate scenario in your mind, please report to the cotton fields immediately. I will be along shortly to beat and otherwise oppress you.
I would also note that many affluent black people don't give a shit about african-american mistreatment in the ghettos. Says a lot about black people huh?
The moral of this stupid little story is: racism against "white people" is still racism. Don't heap the crimes of whomever you feel your "white oppressors" are on the rest of us, because honestly, we don't want to hear you cry about it.
Well, Mr. PhysicsGenius, you're obviously not a genius when it comes to CPU architecture, operating systems, or the Windows APIs. I hate to flame the pro-Linux crowd (mainly because they hold most of the/. mod points), but this sort of thing, both in Linux and BSD crowds, is what makes us all look stupid. Like when you see these Windows vs Linux comparisons. Advocacy is great! Ignorant advocacy, however, is detremental to the cause. I mean look at this crap. This guy's point is that Windows is bound to a 32bit architecture and will have great difficulty moving to 64bit. Yet there have already been 64bit versions of Windows, and there already ARE versions of Windows in various stages of development for IA-64 and AMD's x86-64, not to mention that there were ports to Alpha and other platforms. This is the purest ignorance. My point is this. If you love Linux, tell people you use Linux. If you love BSD, tell people you use BSD. If they ask why, say "because it is so stable" or something. But don't say "because the archtecture is tuned in such a way as to make the porting to 64bit platforms much easier than W1nd0ze. I bet you M1cro$l0th will go out of business with 64bit CPUs become the norm!!" It makes you sound like a complete tool. Especially when you say "Windoze" and "Micro$loth". May I refer you to the following Penny-Arcade cartoon:
Re:Upgrade path from 4.x-STABLE to 5.X-STABLE?

For the love of God, sir, how could you do this? I had finally forgotten the brutal turmoil that was 3.4 to 4.0. Some old wounds should simply not be reopened. As far as I am concerned, major version number upgrade program = newfs.
So your solution is not to boycott the company, but to boycott the people who don't take part in your boycott of the company? Well, you get points for originality I guess! Little bit low on the logic score however.
Summary: someone tries to send email and finds that they're listed on SPEWS. They complain because "we're not an open relay", without figuring out just why they're on that list. Almost invariably, they're on the list because their ISP persistently ignores spam complaints and prefers spammer money to honest customer money. I think there's been about two or three actual mistakes in the SPEWS listings in the year or so I've been following NANAE. Otherwise, it's all been a legitimate extension of the block because the ISP knowingly ignores complaints and supports spammers.
Wait wait wait, let me quote that again. "it's a legitimate extension of the block because the ISP knowingly blah blah blah." My SMTP server is sitting on an IP block that is being "punished" by SPEWS. My ISP is not UUNet, but another ISP which is a customer of UUNet. SPEWS intention of punishing UUNet by blocking MY IP block is not "legitimate" by any definition of the word. I am not a spammer, and my ISP is not tolerant of spammers. But our upstream provider is. So screw us, we're paying the price for the spam jihad.
Open Relay RBLs, hell yes. That is fair and legitimate. But when you take the power given to you through the trust of those who use your service, and use it to beat down on the innocent in order to further your cause, that is unacceptable. I could spend weeks on the phone with UUNet. Do you think I could somehow convince them to stop supporting spammers? Give me a break. You think I can just switch ISPs? My company does telecommunications with voice lines over a DS3 with a contract with our provider for voice and data service. There is no chance of going to another ISP. So, if in the end I am forced to subscribe to ANOTHER T1, from a different provider, just so that our small company can do business, what purpose does that serve? How does that advance the cause? I am willing to make sacrifices for the anti-spam movement, but I don't see exactly what purpose blocking completely secured SMTP-AUTH non-spamming servers does. I followed the rules. I setup my servers responsibly. I still got fucked over. You tell me that's "legitimate."
Now listen to me very carefully. I HATE spam. I employ several spam filtering systems. I even use open relay black hole lists. I have even gone as far as to write my OWN anti-spam content filter system. I use SpamAssassin, but of course I had to comment out the rule for Osirusoft because Osirusoft uses SPEWS, and otherwise SPAM ASSASSIN ENDS UP BLOCKING MY OWN FRICKIN EMAIL. Here I stand, a supporter of the anti-spam cause, blocked with no recourse by people who refuse to talk to me about why I'm being punished. Whose ideas of legitimate include punishing so many of the innocent that the outcry is supposedly supposed to affect the guilty. (Read that sentence again, Mr. Bollocks) Blackhole lists are fair and legitimate as long as you aren't punishing one man for the action of another, and as long as you provide a method for clear and easy removal once terms have been complied with.
Miles "the only good anti-spammer, is the one who will take you off his damned list when you jump through the hoops"
The following is a list of the innocent businesses around my IP range which are punished for the actions of that worthless bastard Eric Reinertsen.

A cop with such an approach to executing the law of the land will think twice before trying to beat someone within an inch of their lives if they think the person is armed and knows how to use the gun. That is especially true for racial and ethnic minorities.
Yeah, if they think the minority is armed and knows how to use the gun, they shoot their ass 10 times THEN shout "Police! Freeze!!" Then when the person moves to fall over dead, the officer determines that the suspect is not following verbal instructions, empties the rest of his clip in the minority, making sure to hit the face a couple times so that the funeral is closed casket.
Not that I think there's anything wrong with that... The plain and simple fact is, I should be able to safely set foot on every inch of American public property, but there are streets in the city of Compton, which I pay for, that were I to set foot on, I would be shot dead. That means there is a lack of justice and almost certainly felons acting outside the law daily with impunity. The L.A.P.D.'s turnover is huge if you happen to consider those KIA as "turnover". If I were an LAPD cop, and I were having to deal with suspects that were minority gang members from gang neighborhoods wearing gang clothes telling me to fuck off when I ask them a question, and then one of the punks went for something in his jacket, I'd put so many holes in his ass he wouldn't know which to shit from.
The reality is, the average Joe Smith with a rifle in his closet isn't a threat. But pissed off people with real greivences shouldn't be packing heat on the streets. And if they do, they are fucking taking their own life into their hands. You play with the big dogs and you're going to get bitten.

But the "hard sciences" community often wants to exclude software engineers because our science is entirely informational.
This article is crap compared to the writeup by Bill Simerson at cheats4us.org
I'm not the actual YOU FAIL IT troll, but he seems to be lacking right now, so I just thought I'd fill in for him and say YOU FAIL IT.

Well, Mr. PhysicsGenius, you're obviously not a genius when it comes to CPU architecture, operating systems, or the Windows APIs. I hate to flame the pro-Linux crowd (mainly because they hold most of the /. mod points), but this sort of thing, both in Linux and BSD crowds, is what makes us all look stupid.
