Is Gaming Too Much Skin, Not Enough Good Clean Fun?
Maybe.
And if it is? So?
Game developers seem to have a hard time coming to terms with the whole "FUN" aspect, much less good CLEAN fun. In the absense of the prefered, give me something else I like.
Waa. What you do then is change who you buy your laptop from. You take the vote up to the next highest level.
Don't like the fact that your crap laptop can't be bought with a free OS (or no OS at all?) switch to a different vendor.
When the sudden rush flows towards one company because they offer something nobody else does, trust me, others will follow.
The problem is the same with business as it is with politics. People don't think for themselves, and they love to believe what they are told by the newspapers, television, education systems, or their parents.
Your Ferrari example doesn't quite work, since few people can afford a Farrari and nearly everybody can aford Microsoft Products; they would rather just spend the money on other things.
How did I boycott Microsoft? I didn't, exactly, but I have 5 systems and only 2 of them run a Microsoft OS, and only one of those came with it (Yes, I actually went out and bought another MS OS...)
The point here is that I supported Microsoft for only 2 of my 5 systems.
I'm not at all above buying a Microsoft OS if I actually intend to use it. Other people who seem to hate Microsoft should avoid doing so, otherwise they really don't have much right to complain. It's not as if it's impossible to buy a system without a Microsoft OS (though I think Microsoft would really love to fix that.)
The Industry WILL sort it out if we excercise our rights and don't buy things from industries that have practices we don't believe in.
For example, The whole DVD issue isn't one we can hardly complain about, since we brought it on ourselves and it's somewhat stuck with it for now.
But what about Operating Systems with ACTIVATION SCHEMES? If we don't like them, we vote them out of existance by NOT BUYING THEM.
I'd rather have companies telling me what to do than the Government, because at least with a COMPANY, I can refuse to pay them. Try not paying your taxes and see how far you get!
he is going to be horribly insulted when his game console crashes.
Rubbish. You don't know crap about consoles.
On one hand, no game console should ever crash. On the other, having owned EVERY game console, and spent immeasurable hours in arcades, I've seen just about every machine crash.
From the Atari 2600 all the way up to the Playstation 2 I've seen games lock up, crap out, go blank, reset, garble the screen, make horrible noises, and just plain die in plain view.
It's not a matter of -IF- game systems are going to have problems. But it's going to be a matter of how LONG you're going to go before you see them.
Until the Playstation came along, crashes were very, very rare. Now it wouldn't be hard to compile a nice list of modern console games with SERIOUS issues. (I think there are even a few N64 games with serious issues!)
The X-Box is not going to be that much worse than the Playstation 2 because software developers will know it's a static machine and they'll learn how to avoid crashing the system.
Consoles are not PCs, and the software developement process is not the same. It's a static environment that lends it's self to a deeper level of mastery.
So, in 2 years if we see games crashing, rest assured they'll all be Electronic Arts and Acclaim titles.
I have the answer, but just as I was about to come public with it a little gray lawyer came to me and told me that it was the Intellectual Property of an Alien Race. Any attempt to reveal it would be met with litigation of galactic proportions.
Sorry guys, but the strong arm tactics of The Orion Grays and their Intellectual Property Laws have somewhat forced me into silence.
That being said, I think 3dfx getting killed was about the worst thing that could happen to the 3D industry. Competition is much less now, and 3dfx always showed a very strong commitment to Open source.
That's crap. They had NO COMMITMENT to Open Sourcing a DAMNED thing until they started grasping at straws for ways to surive!
Originally, they were very strict on the terms and conditions concerning use of GLide. In fact, I remember quite well how they went after Glide Underground for posting Glide wrappers.
Glide only started preaching about Opened Source after they realized their CLOSED API was losing market to Microsoft's closed API and OpenGL.
On the negative note -- without 3DFX... TAGOR has less to complain about.
But I was thinking if an astroid hit the earth and the dust blocked the sun...
The ICE age that followed wouldn't mean the end of life on earth, it would just mean few things woudl survive.
For starters, most of the lower plants would die. That would then in turn kill the lower ends of the life cycle. Creatures that don't mind turning vile and canabalistic will live on as it eats the weaker, and the ones dying off of starvation.
Eventually we would get down to the last few humans.
Most would die of starvation, but some would turn to eating just about anything, even if it meant canabalism.
If you think about it, the population of China alone is enough to keep the strong over there fed for quite a long time.
In the Nashville, TN area, DSL isn't doing too bad.
There are several different providers, but Bellsouth is the most popular. Telocity is also in the area and seems to be doing well.
Most of the people around here I know who have DSL switched to it when it became available, and they were using a cable modem. They're all happier with DSL.
Another interesting irony is that in some places around here, Intermedia isn't even signing more people up for Cable, as it appears as if they may be having problems keeping up with increased demand. So, for some people going with DSL is the only option even if they did prefer Cable.
Also, most of the people I know with DSL get 1.5/256 connections, so you won't hear any of them complaining about speed.
I'm still trying to decide why everyone hates Dell laptops.
I looked over dozens of laptops before I bought mine, and the Dell won out in EVERY catagory, without even a close second contender.
Not even CLOSE.
It was a bit more expensive, but IMHO it was worth the money.
In the end, I only have three complains about my Insperon 5000e.
The first of which is that it's very loud... the fan and the hard drive clicking... I can't stand it. It's louder than my deskdop. But it's a minor complaint.
The scond complaint is that the built in speakers aren't that good. They're not as bad as some that I've heard, but they could be much better.
The last complaint is that I have to keep a fire extinguisher next to my laptop.
Actually -- it wouldn't be hard to layer the batteries with plastic explosives that could detonate on demand using the power of the battery as the charge.
You should have a sense of what makes a good level and what makes a bad level. Start at testing in any game house that's hiring. You could get promoted to assistant level designer.
Are you kidding! I can tell for sure that a game is crap by looking at the publisher!
In a world where people got along -- this wouldn't even be debatable.
Nissan.Com would keep the domain, NissanMotors.Com would have their name -- and if Nissan.Com was feeling REEEEEEALLY nice (not to mention smart), they might even make their home page fairly simple and mostly blank with two messages.
"CLICK HERE TO ENTER NISSAN COMPUTERS" and "IF YOU HAVE MISTAKEN COME HERE SEARCHING FOR NISSAN MOTOR COMPANY, CLICK HERE."
I say smart because I'm sure the hits they must generated from people looking for NissanMotor must be awefully expensive in terms of bandwidth.
I've actually BEEN to Nissan Computers searching for Nissan Motors -- so I know this all too well.
...Sony must think this will either sell a lot of units (and plan to make a profit off of those sales) or they don't think it'll generate a lot of interest.
Their profits rely too much on fees they earn from published games, and free softwear has potential to cut into those fees.
As I've said before though, this very thing cropping up is the very thing that will keep things like TuxBox from taking off. I wonder if that's not the point?

Not really -- that just means that version 2 will probably be called "New and Improved OS."

We're going to keep on debunking proof of aliens until they've taken us over.
Then, we still won't really believe it. We'll have all passed it off as some government conspiracy.

I for one agree with almost everything you are saying...
But they have to actually SHIP it first.
And we've been hearing promises FOREVER.
I reserve the right to say I was wrong later if they actually DO ship something.
Until then... The Amiga is Dead. Long live the Amiga.

I was going to ask you to do that -- but seems you found this message thread on your own!
I figured you of all people would have the list laying around on some old computer somewhere.
For that matter, I probably do too... but I'm even lazier than you.

But that won't work if every watermark is the same, so they won't be able to just stamp these out.
And of course, if they can't just stamp these out -- we'll all be paying a nice premium for that wonderful little watermark that we don't really want.
