Competition and cooperation between the free OS's will lead to better free OS's. Encourage both as much as you can. Just remember that FUD spreading or any other pissing contest is not healthy competition.

Unfortunately, I've noticed that a vast majority of people interested in 'Free Software' could care less about the ethics behind it, the "healthy competition", and even in some cases, not even the truth behind it. (After all, I was informed by an idiot just a few days ago that Linux is a company also known as Red Hat, I figured I'd share that with everone.)

The trend I'm starting to notice (and it bothers me to some great degree) is that the majority of the people I see using Linux just don't like to buy software at all. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE free software, but I buy software, too.

I've seen people brag about how great Linux is for being free, all the while using a pirated copy of Windows ME.

In the end, they didn't pay for either and they're still using Windows. Am I the only person who sees the hypocracy here?

    AMEN!

I could care less if Microsoft's market dominance grows, shrinks, or remains the same! I just wish the troubles that most people seem to have with their OSs would get fixed. (I personally have relatively few problems, but I'm lucky, I guess).

I like BSD. I like Linux. I like them for different reasons. If I had to choose one of the two liscenses, I suppose it would depend more on what I was doing and if I care where it ended up. (It's really a moot point for me, since I don't share my source code. I'm normally ashamed of it.)

But my favorite analogy goes something like this...

If someone GIVES me something for free to do with as I please (say a wooden statue, maybe one that they carved), then I paint it and sell it, do I owe that person anything?

    There is no right answer.

My father just bought a CD-R deck that will not write to most brands of discs.

Since I have a CD-RW drive in my computer, almost every batch of discs he's bought has been given to me, as he can't use them with his writer. Sony and Memorex branded discs work fine. TDK, Maxell, and some REALLY GENERIC stuff he bought (no manufacturer's name that I can see) refuse to write or play on the thing.

It's either a crap writer, or the CD-R industry really needs to standardize, even after all these years.

Personally, I've never had anything that wouldn't read/write/rewrite on my Sony Spressa, but not everybody wants a writer for use with a computer...

I wish I remembered the brand, so I could warn everyone to stay clear... I think the name was like Harmon Kardon or Karmon Hardon or something... It's pure shit.
