I got bored, googled the distance to be an average of 48 million miles. Converted 3e8 m/s to 671,080,888 mph (also used google. I love that site) and did the math to equal 4.29 minutes!
I'm amazed that you just happened to have that 5 minute number memorized. Do you think if we put a carbon fiber hood and an aluminum wing on light it would go even faster?

I don't know for sure, but I think that the largest cause of the failure of space based equipment is radiation. I seem to remember a small satiltite being built by a university using off the shelf parts at an insanely low price. When they had it launched, they knew it wouldn't last more then a year or so because of the radiation.

Try this, put a stick of RAM in your microwave for 3 seconds on low. Then try using it in your computer! I'm sure things aren't quite so bad in space, but it's something to be considered.

I can't imagine working on one of those missions. It must be imensely frustrating to pour your time and effort into a prove that you have no ability to help once it attempts to land. Nasa (and various other space agencies) seem to be pretty good at getting probes to Mars, but landing them safely and intact seems to be mostly beyond our abilities.

Would It be impossible to equip the "mothership" that stays in orbit while the probes are launched with a camera capable of a (relatively) realtime video stream? I'm not up to speed with the throughput of those transmitters, but wouldn't a high quality camera and video feed allow us to watch the probe for most of it's reentry to try to learn from out mistakes? As it is, we know that we've lost several probes, but no one really knows exactly why.

At best, there were 4 to 6 servers online at any given time, with no more then 2 or 3 players on each. The guns were fairly lame, but worst of all, it took 536 bullets to kill anything. I shouldn't be able to take 4 rockets to the chest before I die.
Worst of all, once a side started to win, the new weapons gained were so overpowering that the other side rarely had a chance. I hope they fixed some of these problems.

Is that supposed to mean that 1080i is of higher picture quality then 720p? I assume that the number means lines of resolution, so 1080i would be higher res. Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't a 720 progressive image give you twice the effective framerate? 60 full frames per second versus 60 half frames per second?

My 5900 Ultra has twice as many transistors as my Pentium 4 (both .13, Twice the surface area right?) and came with 256Megabytes of 2.2ns DDR. Add to that the costs of the PCB, memory controller, VIVO-functionality chip, and Cooling solution and you have an expensive product.

You can't expect a fast video card for $80 because you can't assemble fast chips and fast ram for $80.
Midrange is $200-$260. Top end goes from $350 to $550. You can't get any decent DX9 hardware under $100.
