Correct me if I'm wrong but patenting it (and then licensing it), instead of simply using it, most certainly did not put it in the public domain. Had they done it the other way (and not kept it a trade secret) then the public domain would be one more idea richer. As things stand now they are odd at the very least.
And no, I don't belive in the argument "we better patent it now, else someone else will do it down the line and we will be f_cked". If you belive you have a potentially good idea and feel no need to profit through patenting then document what you have done. Doing so will give you a "previous art" defense of nice caliber.
Agreed, it should not be. Interesting enough, I don't remember ever saying it should be. What I am saying is that given the set rules they have to play by, they are playing the game right (possibly for the first time in their life).
I do feel that you are placing a bit to much importance on the entire.iq domain though. In no way is it correct to claim that they are "effectively blocking access to that country through normal means". Sure, it might be nice for Iraq to have its ".iq" back. Not having it does not, however, hold them back in a significant way. A symbol of national independence, yes. A political scoring point, sure. A convenient thing to have, no doubt. But a de facto necessity, no way.
That would be dependant on InfoCom persuing legal action though wouldn't it?
Unknown to me. Possible that their assets are frozen due to the legal trouble I guess.
the.iq TLD has some market value - and it doesn't cost InfoCom anything to hold onto it.
If it has then all the more reason for them to hold on to it. As has been pointed out on Slashdot time and time again, companies are arround to make money. If it's so valuable then why doesn't the iraqi government (or what-have-you) simply buy it from them. This of course assumes that they can sell it (ie the legal possibilities mentioned above holds false).
Im guessing ICANN might want to keep in line with the US legal system since that is where they are located. Now, Im no great lover of ICANN but simply desciding to take back the domain from a company due to some political descissions seems just as bad as the first descission they took with regards to the domain. To use an old saying, "two bads dont make a good".
A wild guess would be that during the first round, ie what you describe as "taking it from Saddam", there was no assigned controll over the.iq domain, at least not to the governing body of Iraq. This would lead to the situation that enabled ICANN to do what they did.
This time arround there most likely is a signed contract (with the Texas company) and thus the domain can not "retaken".
Note that this is pure speculation, I have not even read the article. It does, however, seem fairly logical.
"...in one spectacular moment testifying that as president of Loki he could say how much had been paid to Scott Draeker and when, but as Scott Draeker he could not say whether he actually received the money."
Better then this would be a unit that lets you plug the system(s) in to a "collector box". This would then run a single cable to a second box that would split up the signals to the original cable layout again, thus enabeling you to keep your servers where they you can't hear them, as well as letting you operate several box's from one set of keyboard, mouse and monitor.
Yeah, because as we all know beeing a drug lord these days means you don't have much money and all things you want to get must be through legal channels:)
Acctualy this has been possible for a long time, even when overlooking the obvious X11 forwarding. The plaympeg program (created by lookigames I think.) can play mpeg encoded data in textmode.
Yes, english is not my first language, however I'm not entirely convinced I was totaly wrong. The sentence could be read as "every time a staff member at the library lends a book to a customer the writer gets some money for it" (ie the payment is based on the lending not the borrowing - same thing dif point of view)
Mind you, this was not the way I intended it and you are entirely correct in that borrowing was the word I was looking for.:)
Acctualy, if I'm not completely wrong (which I rarely am;) ), I think many libraries have to pay authors for every single person lending a copy of their book(s). This is (or was) the case in Sweden, doubtfully a local idea at that.
This is not as strange as it might sound though, instead much like the way radiostations operate. One does not have to agree with the exact implementations of these ideas but the fact is - many people want money for their work, no matter if we want to give it to them or not.

Not realy. It has nothing to do with universal - most important part is "uni". University means something along the lines of together blah blah, ie the students were supposed to learn together. They were the ones that set up classes, found teachers, got involved.
I'm sure there is someone here with a degree in latin that can explain it further (I for one would welcome it) but for now, this is as much enlightenment as I will provide you with:)
I'm not realy sure if this is good news or bad, because as any swedish person knows - Telia isn't known for the good decisions they make, rather the opposite...
Things like this is stated over and over and over again. To a part I agree with this - there is no need for this and that in mozilla but the fact is you do not need to use it. you don't even need to have it. Just download the source and tell configure no to include it. I can't say for sertain that this is possible with the irc-client, it is however possible with the news- and mail-clients. If they bothered to set the option for these I'm pretty sure they'll let u skip the IRC and other clients.
If they had energy enough to make the software then ppl could at least gather the energy to compile it.
This has been around for european ppl with wap-access for quite some time now. It's called WeeZap, or something (created by FramFab), and does pretty much the same, only better. Once the next step of GSM is made avalible (no, not UTMS but GPRS) this will be a much smother, and cheaper, sollution.
I've always thought there is a relatively "simple" solution to this exploding cells problem. Focus your research on "speedy freezing" - if the cells hit 0K fast enough the water won't have time to expand, since everything (almost) stands still att 0K. After that you, ofcourse, need to be able to warm up ppl realy fast to to the correct temperature.
Now this doesn't sound to easy, I'll be the first to say, but relative to much of the other things it shouln't be impossible.
If nothing else, here we have previous art (or what ever it's called) if someone tries to implement it in the future:)
Obviously I read what I post, next comment please.
Yes big corporations didn't exist 200 years ago, instead we had higher deg of poverty, lesser standard of living for most ppl and we where taking smaler steps in technological inovativness. I don't argue that big corporations is good for everything, but Im pretty sure that you wouldn't have the possibilty to even post here if it wasn't for them.
As for the reference to USSR i'ts hardly worth answering to. Of course you can strip your ppl of all rights, treat them as slaves, and order them to work like crazy. You will get food from that, you will get an army from that, if you think this is better then corporations then I invite you to move to one of the former USSR states, try out there way of living, and then think: they had it far worse during the USSR, that most have been hell.
Now, about darwin: sure I can - survival of the fittest. It is as easily implemented on competive corporations as it is on evolution of life. The timespan has nothing to do with it, neither did it first surface 400 years ago. Finetuned - yes, but widespread well before that, though perhaps not in the exact form as it is know by now.
I'd rather say: don't put tax on profit made by investing in stocks (or rather companies). This, first of all, removes the double taxation part. But not only does it do this, it would greatly increase the amount of money that is invested in to companies. Whether we like "big evil corporations" or not we must keep one thing in mind: without them we have no job, no food, no infrastructure and not even a slashdot.
There is a reason that capitalism is growing, it was explained a long time ago by a man named Darwin.
Of course, anyone with functioning neurons knows that you use different passwords on each system (especially Web sites where you aren't using any encryption!)
If nothing else Im sure it is pretty easy to find translations of the Bible in many laguages. If you are about to do this kind of project you dont want to spend half your money on translating "Planet of the Apes" God (couldn't help it;)) knows how many times.
Are we talking about the same ICANN?
Then there is the question of defining "nonperformance".
Correct me if I'm wrong but patenting it (and then licensing it), instead of simply using it, most certainly did not put it in the public domain. It's login, like "the process of identifying oneself to a computer, usually by entering one's username and password".
ICANN is not the US gov nor the other way arround, no matter how much so it might seem at times.

Or how about legal issues due to signed contracts?
"...in one spectacular moment testifying that as president of Loki he could say how much had been paid to Scott Draeker and when, but as Scott Draeker he could not say whether he actually received the money."
Thus proving he was in fact a lawyer...

Two things to patent:
First up - the tool:
Forming a relatively thin rod made up of primarily charcole and thereafter encapsulate it in a layer of wood.
Second - the process:
Using said tool on some other material that has the ability to bind the charcole that is released from the tool to itself.
To take this step by step:
Obviously I read what I post, next comment please.
