  1. Re:What a feat! on Solar-Powered Ultralight To Try 24-Hour Flight · · Score: 1

There are only two energy sources on Earth - nuclear (fission/fussion) and solar (well, also tidal). The rest (including wind, biodiesel and even oil and coal) are just transformed and/or stored solar energy. We need to get closer to the source of all this energy technologically, so that we waste less of it - biodesel collects solar energy, stores it into chemical energy, that is then converted into useful mechanical energy via internal combustion. Solar cells + batteries + electrical motors are far more efficient than that. Even solar cells -> water hydrogen separation -> hydrogen fuel cells -> electrical motors is more efficient. Yes - we need to balance scalability and cost by means of mass production, but the end goal is end-to-end efficiency.

Most wars cause famine, because fields are destroyed, able bodied farmers are drafted into military and die and most of the industrial resources of the warring countries are diverted towards the military complex instead of improving food production. So your argument is invalid. Fighting does not actually solve famine, it just makes sure that military gets fed and that's all.

GRUB2 I am not deeply impressed about, but it does make it so that my computer switches to native resolution immediately and never switches to anything else, so there is no annoying flicker during boot. Also, they say that support for newer filesystems on root/boot partitions (such as btrfs) is easier to ass in GRUB2.

However NetworkManager and PulseAudio are a godsend. NetworkManager works like a charm - simplifying all that crazy stuff with juggling multiple wireless access points in different locations, each with their own network settings and wireless encryption setting. I set it up once per location and now I can just roam and have my network just work. And PulseAudio is great - I can play multiple audio streams and adjust volume for every application separately and also stream sound over the network with by just checking two boxes.

Ubuntu provides vision. They don't have to always be right, they just need to walk forward toward a goal they consider worthy and see if enough people go with them.
