    This is probably analogous to censorware for blocking web sites.

    I'm a gamer and the blocking software used at my workplace blocks Wizards of the Coast's website (they are the biggest game company, the makers of Dungeon's and Dragons). But none of the smaller companies.

    Obscure songs are probably not on the list. Do you really thing they had time to go through EVERY song they MIGHT every play or have requested? Keep in mind they own a buttload of stations.

    Of course the flip side of this is that they homogenize things so much, maybe they did have time since the play lists are so small. :-(

    Or censoring what their DJs want to play. Or what I might call up and request.

    ClearChannel's business tatics and huge market shared do NOT earn them the benefit of my doubt.

    This sounds like it's just using HP's VirtualVault product. It does thinks like break up the root functions into separate mini-accounts. (In addition to more traditional IDS functionality.)

    This is not true. They ripped out the offending stuff, then released. Then everyone saw what a mess it was and started over.

    a progressive tax system (more or less) is to

    I have taught several 'pure' HTMLers a little PHP and they have always been able to quickly extend their knowledge to do stuff more complicated than the simple code I started them on.

    PHP is easy to get started with and from there you can quickly bootstrap your way up to the more complex stuff.

    I think you are giving far too much credit to people. Part of the reason people don't 'snitch' is the fear of being found out as the snitcher. The anonymity and various channels to report someone remove this utterly. Additionally, there are apparently incentives for turning people in!

    There are no reasonable social consequences to make an angry or unscrupulous person think twice before calling up WAVE and reporting.

    Well, this isn't quite as cut and dried as you have it.

    Unix is a trademark. Unix 98 is a specification.

    All of those Unix-like OSes except Linux are derived from one or both of the original BSD and SysV code bases. This is what being Unix means in this article and usually on /..

    Linux was written from scratch. Therefore, it's not Unix in the sense I described above. It is a Unix-clone I suppose.

    Of course your point about any OS which follows a Unix specification being Unix is valid too. It just depends on how you choose to define 'Unix'.

    Remember that Irix, Solaris et al run on larger
    machines. How many NT or Linux boxen does it
    take to equal a Sun E3500?


    What would be interesting would be the break
    down by # of CPUs. Unix would obviously have
    a (much?) larger share.

    Umm, Firewire and USB are not competing
    standards. Firewire is high bandwidth and
    USB is low bandwidth.


    They no more try to tackle the same problem
    than say, IDE and parallel ports. Which is
    to say that there is a little overlap at the
    high-end USB/low end Firewire bandwidths, but
    you wouldn't put your primary hard drive on
    your parallel port. Nor would you put it on
    your USB hub.

    Sony doesn't make money selling the hardware.
    They make money licensing others to make and
    sell games.


    AFAIK, Sony is selling the hardware at or
    below cost. And of course they have some
    serious scale economies. ;-)

    Played copycat with Microsoft by trying to hoard Firewire. Net result: Manufacturers moved to USB. Huh? Firewire and USB are apples and oranges. Firewire is a high bandwidth bus. USB isn't. You might as well say that the regular serial port beat out IDE for use with mice and modems.

    Water, or anything else, can never be at exactly
    0 degrees Kelvin.

    What you are refering to is the triple point of
    water, were all three states coexist. (Just
    like at 32 F water can be either liquid or
    solid.) The triple point of water occurs at
    273.16 and when the pressure is equal to the
    vapor pressures of the solid and liquid state
    (don't remember what it is, but it's near
    vacuum.)

    Incidentally, the freezing point of water is
    273.15 K.

    I don't know of a privacy howto. But there are
    plenty of books out there about protecting your
    privacy. Check out
    Atomic Books. There's a ton of wacky stuff there, to
    to the Privacy/New ID category.
