Thanks for the tip, I'll try running it on a D201GLY2A I have right here. The CPU is probably more powerful than an old AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (I'm guessing), we'll see if the integrated SiS Mirage 1 is enough to do the rest.
Worst case scenario it won't work at all. Best case scenario I won't see much of a difference and I'll lower the noise, the heat and the electricity bill. Heck I even have an old ATI PCI card lying around somewhere that could be enough for the job. FF XI came out when AGP was brand new, a lot of players were using PCI cards back then. And Win98SE isn't ressources-hungry like WinXP.
Since you seem to know nVidia's lineup, what would you recommend for a fan-less PCI or AGP card good enough to run Final Fantasy XI in 1280x1024?
And before you say "FF XI is old, any current card will do", let me remind you that it's a MMORPG with more than a few dozen players on the screen at once (in Jeuno, for example), and my target is to have around 20 FPS in worst-case scenario.
I'm asking for PCI because I might try to dump my current AMD Athlon 2600+/KT6 Delta box (which is huge) with a fanless mini-ITX/Core Solo system (if possible). Mind you, I only run Win98SE with 512MB/1GB because FF XI runs fine on that.
Also keep in mind that I'm currently using an ATI Radeon 9600XT and it can barely hold 15 FPS in crowded areas, in 640x480.
I, for one, don't want a GPU which requires 25W+ in standby mode.
My Mac mini has a maximum load of 110W. That's the Core 2 Duo CPU, the integrated GMA950, 3GB of RAM, a 2.5" drive and a DVD burner, not to mention FireWire 400 and four USB 2.0 ports under maximum load (the FW400 port being 8W alone).
Granted the GMA950 sucks compared to nVidia's current offerings, however do they have any plans for low-power GPUs? I'm pretty sure the whole company can't survive on the FPS-crazed game players revenues alone.
They should start thinking about asking intel to integrate their (current) laptop GPUs into intel CPUs.
It's hard for the camera companies to make any money (and pay for the cameras) if you have to give 100% to someone else.
How about simply selling the cameras and the systems and not asking for royalty?
Who authorized such a royalty in the first place? The money generated by laws (or the breaking of said laws) should go to the government, not companies.
I think you need to read up on commercial machines, i.e. Stratasys have machines and plastics that make production-grade parts. More and more companies are using this as their main supply of short-run parts.
I don't work or represent them, but I did order a few free samples of what their machines can do. It's getting better every few years and it's already at least a decade ahead of RepRap.
I agree that CNC is better for a lot of things, but there's some things that CNC will never be able to do even if it had 4th, 5th and 6th axis for rotating the part in all directions.
Requiring someone to sign up for it would mean fees, and I'm guessing it wouldn't be cheap, hence we're back to square one for most OSS/single-person projects.
Why can't we put our efforts toward more efficient GPUs? Just as most users won't ever be able to push their current CPUs at their maximum, most aren't even using the full power of their GPUs.
I want a fanless, 5W GPU with the power of GPUs from about 3 years ago. Can the new smaller transistors allow for this or am I asking for too much?
If ATI and nVidia keep pushing for raw power, they'll get beaten to the low-power finish line by the likes of intel and VIA.
Indeed. On OS X, I see flat grey buttons (with a mouse-hover effect) and I see regular Aqua-styled drop-down menus right to their right (for modding).
Just because buttons are ugly by default on Windows doesn't mean you should mess with the interface of others.
What's more, I see that the Preview, Quote Parent, Options and Cancel buttons at the bottom of my reply window are still regular Aqua-styled buttons.
DON'T MESS WITH GUI's!
Not to mention that this new interface doesn't even offer me a "Submit" button even after I clicked on "Preview"! I had to use the old interface to post this reply!
Apple is so closed and proprietary... That must be why OS X can read/write PDFs, saves its screen captures in PNG, recognizes JPEG/PNG/GIF/BMP (yes, even that crappy Microsoft format), why iTunes supports MP3 and AAC (the later being from Dolby), why my Logitech mouse with scrollwheel and 3 buttons works just fine, why Keynote can export to PowerPoint, Flash and PDF, why Pages supports Microsoft Word, RTF, PDF and plain text files and why Numbers supports Excel and CSV documents. Mail doesn't require a.Mac account, I use my regular email box from my ISP.
That must also be why I have Apache, PHP and mySQL installed and ready to run, out of the box.
Apple could have re-invented the wheel, Microsoft-style (BMP, WAV, WMV, WMA, etc), but instead they choose to use industry standards.
You may not like that Apple isn't making all their software freely available along with the source code, you may not like that you can't install OS X on a generic box. But we're not talking about Linux here.

No competition? What? Did ATI die or something?
Yes I know they got bought by AMD, but they still exist and they still make GPUs AFAIK.
And if your argument is that nVidia is better than ATI, let me remind you that ATI/nVidia and intel/AMD keep leapfrogging each other every few years.

So it's just like a regular inkjet printer then?
May I suggest sodium bicarbonate and vinegar? Or maybe Diet Coke and Mentos?
Patiently wait for more Red Bull?
Man that thing is waaaaaay to large and way too short to ressemble anything close to Bonaparte. ;)
If you do find someone making a Bonaparte-alike tank in real life, though, send me a link.
Well, this thing shoots Red Bull cans, so it's more than probable that it's ALWAYS the same tailgaters.
They're happy about the free Red Bull but they're pissed at the slow speed at the same time!
Hum... Fudge.... aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrgggllllllll [/Homer]
I'm sorry but pretty much the rest of the planet already sees the USA as having lost its freedom.
P.S. to the coding monkeys: I only had the "no submit button" problem when I also had mod points AND had already modded the discussion.
Bah, I don't care, I prefer Tim Hortons anyway.
Well, do tell? Who owns Dunkin Donuts?
Chaaaaaaange

Who's coding half-working interfaces?!
The solution exists with Apple. It's called a Mac Pro and a Mac mini.
who you can trust.
Score: 5, Confused
Of course the web is a jungle! Why do you think they called their browser Safari?
P.S.: I'm replying via Safari and I don't see any pro@@%$@#CR~~NO CARRIER
